A Message from the PRESIDENT
As President of Fitness New Brunswick, I am pleased to welcome you to the 20 th annual Personal
Training & Fitness Summit.
This year’s theme “Fitness: Then, Now and Forever” celebrates our organization’s history and
embraces our future. While a lot has changed in the fitness industry throughout the last twenty years,
we have continued to strive towards our vision of being “the leading authority in certifying fitness and
exercise professionals in New Brunswick.”
I strongly believe that fitness professionals make a positive difference in the lives of many.
Congratulations for taking a leading role and helping to improve the physical and mental well-being of
numerous individuals in our communities.
I would like to express my thanks to our past and present board members for their dedication to
helping improve our organization and I look forward to working with new members. Our success is
dependent upon the contribution of volunteers.

HELEN VANDERBURG
“A former World Champion synchronized swimmer, Helen has won international
awards and accolades both as an athlete and a fitness leader. As an athlete,
Helen was named Canada’s Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year for an
unprecedented three consecutive years; as well, has been inducted into both the
International Swimming Hall of Fame and the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. As a
fitness leader and club owner Helen has over 25years of experience operating
Heavens Fitness Club and Fountain Park Health Club in Calgary. In 1996 alone,
Helen was awarded the IDEA (International Association of Fitness Leaders)
Program Director of the Year and the CanFitPro (Canadian National) Instructor of
the Year. In 2001, Helen was awarded the Mall Peepre Memorial Award by the
National Fitness Leadership Advisory Council (NFLAC) and also received the
Calgary Women of Vision award for her outstanding contribution to fitness
leadership. She is the team leader for the Canadian NIKE presenting team and a
fitness columnist for the local newspaper, the Calgary Herald.”

(1A) XiT.. Xttreme Interval Training 2nd Edition (Helen Vanderburg)
Based on Helen’s most popular workshop, Extreme Interval Training, this new workshop focuses on
partner and small group interval exercises. Come away with a new ideas and a variety of exercises
you can use to challenge your participants. Rev up your bootcamp classes, partner and small group
training interval workouts. This workshop has it all... cardio, strength, power, balance and
coordination. Bring a towel, ‘cause you will SWEAT!
(1B) Putting Research Into Practice: Facilitating Physical Activity in Children and
Youth (Michel Johnson “B”, Grant Handrigan & Horia-Danial Lancu)
How can we engage our children and youth during physical activity sessions? Research in motor
control, motor learning, and motor development provide thoughtful insight in making sessions fun and
active for participants. In particular, the practical aspects of teaching games for understanding will be
explored. In addition, guidelines from the long term athlete development model as it pertains to the
development of fundamental movement skills in 7-12 year olds will be discussed.
(1C) Yoga Can Be For Everyone (Marc Polley)
This workshop will start with a short practice and then Marc you will take you into a close look at the
key elements of a yoga practice in order to learn how to use these elements to create modifications
that suit your students including how persons with a disability can adapt themselves to a regular yoga
class.

(2A) Group Blast (Jenny Hendy)
BLAST OFF your workout with 60 minutes of cardio training that uses the Step in highly affective,
athletic ways. Group Blast will get your heart pounding and sweat pouring as you improve your
fitness, agility, coordination and strength with exciting music and group energy. HAVE A BLAST!
(2B) Empowering Yourself/Empowering Others (Maureen O’Hara)
In this presentation, Maureen shares her story of personal empowerment - Maureen’s transition from
a business professional to a stay at home mother of four children and finally, her migration into a
career as a wellness professional. In this session, Maureen shares her 7 keys to successfully
empowering participants to achieve their wellness goals.
(2C)Systematic Cueing (Helen Vanderburg)
Develop the systematic technique for coaching and cuing exercise technique that helps your clients
and class participants get more from every exercise you teach. From yoga to resistance training this
systematic approach to exercise technique and alignment cueing will bring mindfulness to everything
you teach. Learn how you can advance your coaching and cueing skills to assist your clients in
achieving their goals.
(2D) Deep Water Circuit (Line Marr “B”)
In this aqua session, high-intensity aquatic exercises will be organized in a circuit fashion, with
powerful training ideas. This session is more about muscle than music; more about cardio than
choreography. This session is perfect for group aqua fitness leaders and aquatic personal trainers
who want a powerful approach to high intensity training.

(3A) BOSU® Mobility and Stability for Active Aging (Helen Vanderburg)
Learn exercises, sequences, drills and skills perfect for the gentle exerciser and active aging market
that use the BOSU® Balance Trainer in many unique ways. Moving through many of the body's
functional positions for activities of daily life, this workshop will explore how the Balance Trainer can
provide assistance, resistance, cushioning and stimulus to amplify the effect for this important and
growing market of exercisers. Help your clients build functional strength, face their fear of falling with
gait training, learn various ways to get up and down, move more efficiently through the entire kinetic
chain, and ultimately make all of their daily movements easier to do!
This session is a showcase for the full 8 Hour BOSU Mobility and Stability for Active Aging
Certification
(3B) Getting Back to the Basics: Food as Fuel! (Vanessa MacLellan)
This session will explore how we can get back to the basics (‘all foods can fit’ approach & food skills)
so that we use nourishing foods to fuel our bodies. Common nutrition myths will be “busted” on a
variety of topics and allow for a discussion on trendy diets.
(3C) CORE-Operate (Alina Cress)
In this active session, we will start with three basic core stabilizing exercises and then add exciting
variety to make the basics turn into the advanced! The focus will be placed on identifying the “core”
and creating a strong foundation with proper muscle recruitment. This session will help you to create
endless possibilities of effective, challenging and fun core training…without a single sit-up!

Key Note Address “The Five Pillars of Sport” (Mike Eagles)
Mike’s key note address is based on his life in sport and fitness and the five pillars that have been and continue
to be a direct benefit to him. His message will inspire you to think outside the box and take that inspiration to
yourself, your participants and your clients.
11:00 am – 12:15 pm
(4A) Combustion (Helen Vanderburg)
This group fitness class brings the best of cardio, strength and explosive power into one workout.
Combustion combines steady state cardiovascular training with simple to follow choreographed hi/low
moves, high intensity explosive movement and based full body strength exercises. Bring it all together
and you get COMBUSTION.
(4B) Exercise Prescription for Chronic Neurological Conditions (Alina Cress)
In this lecture-based session with some interactive components, learn appropriate body weight and
resistance exercises, postural training and balance work for people with a chronic neurological
condition. With a strong focus on neuro-motor training, there will be lots of interesting and creative
ways to blend the balance of exercise and fun. You will be exposed to proper cueing, safety
precautions and common exercise adaptations to meet the needs of diverse abilities. A brief
overview of conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s’ and post-stroke signs and symptoms
will be discussed as well. Information presented in this session is based on the successful A.X.O.N
(Advanced Exercise for Our Nerves) program hosted at the University of New Brunswick.
(4C) TRX Suspension Training (Pat Corkum)
This workshop covers basic use and knowledge of the TRX Suspension trainer, including the
fundamentals of proper set up, anchoring, appropriate length adjustments as well as basic exercises.
You will learn the 6 sins of TRX Suspension Training, and how to apply stability and vector principles.
There would also be a practical component to this workshop to ensure hands on TRX experience.

(5A) Vinyasa & Yin (Melissa Fraser)
This is a balanced class designed to open the connective tissue of the body, improving our range of
motion and joint stability with Yin poses coupled with the invigorating, flowing movement of the
Vinyasa flow. The perfect balance of Yin and Yang, this practice is certain to leave you energetically
charged.
(5B) In it for Life (Helen Vanderburg)
The fitness industry is an exciting and dynamic profession. With over 25 years of experience as a
club owner, international fitness presenter, writer, DVD producer and consultant, Helen Vanderburg
will share with you her secrets to creating longevity in this ever-changing industry. Find out how you
can carve out your niche in the fitness industry and continue to evolve you career for life!
(5C) Strip Away the Noise: Fitness 101 to Get People Started (Maureen O’Hara)
For people who are looking to change their lives by adopting a healthier lifestyle, and a wellness
routine, where do they turn? We are all bombarded daily with the latest and greatest paths to
wellness success. In this session, Maureen helps participants to filter out the clutter and return to the
basics of a healthy wellness regime.
(5D) Indoor Cycling – Appealing to the Senses (Alina Cress)
Is your indoor cycling teaching style getting stale? In this active session you will learn how to
creatively weave your favorite drills into an experience that incorporates visualization cues that tease
the mind and the body! Learn to create a story within one song or maximize the experience into your
full ride. This session will provide you with imaginative cueing; motivational teaching approaches,
and give you the tools to become a great indoor cycling story teller and instructor!
3:30 – 4:15 pm
Summit Finale – Restore and Renew (Helen Vanderburg)
This practical session is designed to restore and renew your body after an intense day of training.
This session blends dynamic and static stretching, restorative yoga poses and breath awareness.
Take away ideas to bring back to your classes and clients.
Presenter Biographies
Pat Corkum, Fredericton, NB
With over 10,000 hours of TRX Coaching experience Pat is listed as an Elite TRX Trainer on the TRX
Training coach ranking system. He has more TRX Training courses and experience than any other
TRX Coach in the country and shares his expertise by offering a variety of training workshops such
as TRX RIP, TRX Yoga, TRX Suspension Training and TRX Kettlebell Fusion. He has also lead
workshops and demonstrations for the personal trainers and operational offers for The Atlantic YMCA
Y’s in Motion leaders’ education day. Pat is the owner and operator of Dynamic Training Centre and
hosts the annual “Get Fit Stay Fit” summer health and wellness event at Officers Square in
Fredericton which offers information and fun fitness activities for all ages.
Alina Cress (CSEP-CPT), Fredericton, NB
Alina is the Head Trainer at the University of New Brunswick's Sun Life Financial Fitness Assessment
Centre within Recreation Services at the Richard J. CURRIE CENTER. Alina completed, with
Honours, her degree in Kinesiology McMaster University and went on to further studies becoming a
Registered Massage Therapist with a specialization in myofascial release. Alina is a CSEP-CPT, a
Yoga Teacher (YTT200hr), has her FNB GFL certification, is a C.O.R.E. indoor cycling instructor, and
is currently the only BoneFit trained (through Osteoporosis Canada) professional in Fredericton.
Working within Recreation Services, she became involved in fitness and wellness programming
where she finds great joy in teaching a variety of classes to a diverse group of people. She continues
to seek opportunities to learn and grow since she believes that in order to be a good teacher, you
must be a great student.
Michael Bryant Eagles, Fredericton, NB
Born and raised in Sussex, NB, Mike is married to Anne-Marie Eagles, who is an educator. Together
they have two sons, Matt, a med school student and Chris who is pursuing his masters in music.
Before retiring as a professional hockey player in 2000 Mike played 853 regular season NHL games
for four teams including Quebec, Chicago, Winnipeg and Washington. Mike is a member of the
Sussex High Sonics Wall of Fame, Sussex Sports Wall of Fame, Fredericton Sports Wall of Fame
and the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame. He is a lifelong fitness and sports enthusiast and is
currently the Director of Athletics at St. Thomas University.
Melissa Fraser, Moncton, NB
The Health & Fitness industry has been her home for close to 16 years now. Melissa’s path began
with personal training & group fitness and continued on to incorporate holistic nutrition &
acupuncture. She completed her first yoga teacher training in India in 2007 and have been dedicated
to exploring and sharing the practice ever since.

Jenny Hendy, Moncton, NB
Jenny is a seasoned certified fitness leader; she does it all from teaching the great standards such as
Step, Cardio, Portable Equipment and Yoga as well as the specialty classes of Group Power, Group
Centergy, Group Blast. She is currently serving on the Moncton “In Motion committee” where she
lives. In the past she has been a director on the FNB BOD and has been a part of “Energize” for the
city of Moncton. Jenny has spent many years dedicated to making classes safe, fun and effective.
Michel Johnson, Moncton, NB
Michel is an Assistant Professor in the School of Kinesiology and Leisure at Université de Moncton.
He teaches courses in motor development and exercise prescription, and is the co-author of a
textbook on the Psychology of Exercise and Healthy Aging. Michel completed graduate studies at
Université Laval and the University of Western Ontario in Kinesiology.
Line Marr, Fredericton, NB
Line is a Master Trainer for the AQX program. She has been active in the fitness industry for over 26
years and has shared her passion for fitness through her sense of humor and solid knowledge of the
aqua world! Her certifications include FNB/AQX (Aqua Fitness Leadership), C.O.R.E Cycling,
Spinning Level 2 Instructor (Mad Dogg Athletics), YogaFit Level 3 & Restorative and CanFitPro (PTS
& FIS). Line lives in Fredericton N.B. and is now enjoying semi-retirement while remaining active in
the fitness industry.
Maureen O’Hara, Saint John, NB
Maureen works as a Personal Fitness Trainer, Group Fitness Trainer and Wellness Consultant with a
large corporation. She formed her own company “Priorities in Focus” in 2010 and believes that “it is
important to establish our own selves as priorities in our lives and to take care of our own health and
wellness in body mind and spirit”. Maureen, as a mother of four, also volunteers with her children’s
schools and coaches’ Girls Bantam Basketball. She also enjoys teaching fitness on a regular basis.
She enjoys sharing her health and fitness story with others.
Marc Polley (CYT 200), Moncton, NB
Marc was always been a seeker and decided to move to California in 2001 in his search for the
adventure. In California, Marc explored various meditation styles. While on a weekend trip to Mexico,
Marc was introduced to The 5 Tibetan Rites. The 5 Tibetan Rites became a daily physical practice as
it relieved physical pain and relaxed his mind. Marc continued practicing The 5 Tibetan Rites for four
years when he decided he would attempt to join a yoga class. The benefits of a yoga practice were
immediately evident. In 2008, Marc went to Brazil and took a Yoga Teacher Training in Vinyasa Flow.
Since his initial Yoga Teacher Training, Marc has participated as a guest teacher in many Yoga
Teacher Trainings in Brazil and Calgary.
Marc's yoga classes focus on having fun while being mindful of the body following the rhythms of the
breath. Marc teaches Mindfulness Meditation as well as yoga.
Marc has as a goal to inspire people to practice yoga and reap the benefits that come from a daily
practice. Marc, being an amputee, is overcoming a physical disability and people can often be inspired to
be active when they see Marc's efforts.
Vanessa Yurchesyn, Saint John, NB
Vanessa Yurchesyn is your In-Store Dietitian at Atlantic Superstore Saint John, KV Market,
Millidgeville, Sussex and St Stephen. Vanessa obtained her BSc in Applied Human Nutrition
(Honours) with an Internship Education Program at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, NS.
Vanessa’s areas of focus include, but are not limited to, management or prevention of chronic
diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease; food preparation and cooking tips
to enjoy nutritious and tasty meals every day; strategies for weight loss or weight gain; sports nutrition
and food allergies/intolerances. With a background in private consulting and in long term care,
Vanessa has experience working with children and adolescents, athletes, seniors and everyone in
between! Vanessa loves to cook, educate and share credible food and nutrition information on
camera, radio and in written media.
Vanessa believes that the grocery store setting is the perfect place for a dietitian to inspire and
motivate people to live healthier lives! With her philosophy that ‘all foods can fit’, she makes healthy
eating enjoyable and achievable!

The officers, staff and volunteers of Fitness New Brunswick Inc., advise that if you are currently taking
medications, have any physical ailment or you are otherwise not in physical condition suitable for
activity, it could be injurious to you. You should seek medical advice regarding these matters before
participating in the programs and activities at the Fitness New Brunswick Personal Training and
Fitness Summit.
This document is a release of claims against any member, or representative of Fitness New Brunswick
and by signing it you:
1. Acknowledge that when performing exercise routines or engaging in similarly strenuous activity,
you may suffer injury.
2. Represent to Fitness New Brunswick that you are in good health and physical condition and are
not disabled, taking medication or suffering from a condition that would prevent you from
engaging in such activities.
3. Assume the risk of and hold Fitness New Brunswick harmless from any liability for any physical
or other injury of harm suffered by you during or performing such routines or engaging in such
other strenuous physical activity, and agree that Fitness New Brunswick shall not have any
liability or responsibility for any such injury of harm.
