Dear Parents, The Archdiocese of Seattle will be hosting the annual Catholic Youth Convention (CYC) at Bellevue College on November 1-2, 2014. This gathering is a wonderful opportunity for youth from around the Archdiocese to grow closer to Christ, deepen their knowledge of the faith, and grow in fellowship with one another. Last year, nearly 1500 youth participated in this gathering, some even travelling from as far as Canada and Oregon. Throughout the weekend, students will have the chance to listen to inspiring Catholic speak- ers. We are excited to welcome APEX Ministries - Brad Farmer and Gene Monterastelli. APeX Ministries (aka Gene and Brad) is an internationally known comedy duo based out of Balti- more, MD and Casper, WY. Since 1996 they have traveled North America using a style they de- fine as Christian Vaudeville. This includes death defying juggling, sketch comedy, and personal testimony. In other words, they are evangelists, they throw things at each other, and they are funny. CYC is blessed to have faith-filled adults and youth who will keynote throughout the weekend. Archbishop Sartain will be one of the keynote presenters and spending time with the youth through leading a time of Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. Youth will have opportunities for Reconciliation and Mass. Throughout the weekend, youth will attend workshops and prayer experiences, mingle with other Catholic youth, and be invited to grow as disciples of God. We encourage you to consider sending your youth to the Catholic Youth Convention 2014. CYC is truly a powerful experience that will help our youth develop a deeper connection to Christ and grow as active participants in the Church. We hope you will join us this year for another successful Catholic Youth Convention. Peace and Joy, Jen Leatham, Youth Minister [email protected] 360.886.2229 Office Hours: Wednesday and Thursday 9am-2pm Archbishop J. Peter Sartain D.D., S.T.L. Archbishop Peter Sartain was born to Joseph and Catherine Sartain on June 6, 1952, in Memphis, Tennessee. On July 15, 1978, he was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Memphis. Pope John Paul II appointed Archbishop Sartain Bishop of Little Rock, Arkansas, on January 4, 2000. He was ordained on March 6, 2000, and took as his episcopal motto: “Of You My Heart Has Spoken” (Psalm 27:8). He was appointed Bishop of Joliet, Illinois, by Pope Benedict XVI on May 16, 2006, and was installed on June 27. On September 16, 2010, he was appointed Archbishop of Seattle and was installed on December 1, 2010. Archbishop Sartain currently serves as a member of the Subcommittee on Hispanic Affairs and the Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. He is also the secretary of the USCCB. 4 5 6 Gene Monterastelli Brad Farmer The person: Gene was born and raised in Casper, Wyoming. The rumors that he was raised by a pack of wolves are highly overstated. (It was only two, not a pack.) Gene would consider his birth as the most signiicant moment in his life. “I could not imagine what my life would have been like if I would have never been born.” His earliest memories are of playing with Tonka Trucks and drinking cologne. (We think it explains a lot). Brad taught Gene the basics of juggling as a sophomore in high school. In his free time (like he has any) Gene likes to write letters, drink tea, have stories read to him, and roll down big grassy hills. When he grows up (if it ever happens, our bet is it won’t) he would like to be a teacher. As a small child Gene acquired a taste for Cinnamon Life, which is his favorite food to this day. Gene was a nerd (and some would contest he still is) and loved being on the Math team (from time to time he still likes to wear his pocket protector). Jim Henson and Paul Simon are Gene’s two greatest artistic inluences (which makes very little sense for a juggler). In college Gene was known for the fact that he only owned two pairs of lannel plaid shorts and wore them all of the time. (Now he is known for only owning one pair of green corduroy pants which he wears all of the time. Don’t worry though, he washes them once a week if they need it or not.) Brad Farmer was born and raised in Casper, WY, where the Medicine Bow National Forest meets the Great Plains. At an early age his father taught him that “Farmers are out- standing in their ield,” and Brad strives to be no exception. When he was young, Brad dreamed of being an astronaut. Now he tries to conquer gravity in a different manner. Brad met Gene in seventh grade CCD class – who would have ever guessed then that the seeds were being sown that would eventually lead to the formation of APeX? Brad & Joia Farmer were united in the holy Sacrament widely known as “Marriage” in 1999. Together, they ight the forces of evil, diapers & toilet cleanings, all while taking care of their 4 beautiful children, Jack, Ava, Caedmon & Simon. Brad & Joia are currently the Co-Directors of Youth Ministry at 4 (that’s right, f-o-u-r) parishes in downtown Denver. BRAD and GENE COMBINED = APEX MINISTRIES APeX is two Catholic men (Brad Farmer and Gene Monterastelli) who have made it their lives’ work since 1996 to criss-cross North America sharing the Truth and Joy of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They have crafted a unique style (they call it “Christian Vaudeville”) that engages an audience and creates rapport through telling “parables” through sketch comedy, seamlessly integrating the use of juggling and street performer style skill and intensity. Once an audience is thoroughly engaged, Brad and Gene share personal testimony of spiritual realities and take them deeper in exploring the Catholic themes of their parables. Brad and Gene then challenge the audience to put the concepts into practice in every day life. In other words, Gene and Brad are evangelists, they throw things at each other, and are funny. Since 1996, they have crisscrossed North America sharing the Gospel message in our own unique way. APeX has entertained, evangelized, and inspired in 48 states, 5 Canadian provinces, China, and Peru at thousands of Catholic events. They keynote large diocesan, regional, and national conferences, as well as lead retreats, parish missions, or share evenings with youth groups, families, and/ or full parish communities. 7 8 Saturday Evening Parish Time CYC is packed with speakers, prayer, workshops, music and more. The time lies quickly, so a moment to take a breath, relect and reconnect with the parish group is truly a blessing. Following Adoration, led by Archbishop Sartain, there will be time set aside for each parish to gather. This time allows participants to share where they have ‘seen God’ throughout the day, to pray together, and for leaders to give each participant a ‘tiny saint charm’ that includes a synopsis of the Saint’s life. These ‘tiny saints’ are meant to be that concrete reminder that each of us has a unique call to be witness to the light and love of our Lord. The charms will be included in your parish packet at registration. Please contact Joy ([email protected]) if you wish to have a classroom set aside for your parish to use for this time on Saturday evening. Saturday Social This time is a chance to get to know other youth from around the archdiocese, relax from the amazing full day, and have a great time! Teens will be invited to high energy activities from Laser Tag to mini-competitions. Those hoping to relax a bit will ind a ‘chaplet making’ craft area related to our #saintsalive focus or even a movie. ‘God’s Got Talent’ is a chance for youth to share their gifts of music, poetry, relection – or to simply appreciate the gifts of those who choose to share. There’s something for everyone and we’re excited to share this time together! 9 Catholic Youth Convention 2014 November 1-2, 2014 Bellevue College, Bellevue, WA Schedule Table of Contents SATURDAY 7:30 am 7:45 am 8:45 am CYC Essentials 3 Letter from the Archbishop 5 Meet the Emcees 7 Saturday Evening 9 9:00 am Preparing & Registration 10 Get Involved 11 10:45 am Noon – 1:15pm 2:30pm 3:30pm Preparing Chaperones 12-13 Housing & Meals 15 Recognitions 16 Youth Keynotes & St. Timothy 17 Sharing the Experience 18 5:15pm 7:00pm 8:00pm 8:30pm Registration & Doors Open Optional Mass for feast of All Saints Day Opening of CYC 2014 with Banner Procession General Session: #saintsalive with APeX ministries Workshop Round 1 Box Lunch Provided Workshop Round 2 Prayer Experience General Session: Called to Holiness with Archbishop Sartain Dinner Break Adoration led by Archbishop Sartain Parish Time Saturday Social SUNDAY 8:00 am 8:30 am 10:15 am 11:30 am Doors Open General Session: Set the World on Fire Round Table/Panel Discussion Breakouts Closing Mass MISSION OF CYC The Archdiocese of Seattle annual Catholic Youth Convention provides youth the opportunity to grow as disciples, deepening their relationship with Jesus Christ.
