What Belongs to God

Blessings: This week’s message:
What Belongs to God
The Pharisees wanted a reason to accuse Jesus to the Roman authorities so they could have Him put to death.
They asked whether or not it was right for Jews to pay
taxes to Caesar. In this, they tried to make Jesus decide
between the kingdom of Caesar and the Kingdom of God.
Jesus’ reply was, “Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar,
and to God what belongs to God.” We sometimes fall under the assumption that the world and the Kingdom of
God are incompatible. But that is a worldly view. The
worldly resist the Kingdom of God in so many
ways, refusing to embrace it. But God uses the
establishments of the world to usher in His
Kingdom. We see evidence of this in our first
reading where Cyrus, the great Persian conqueror, is informed that his power is given to
Him by God, to fulfill the greater purpose of
helping to establish God’s Kingdom.
Our second reading is from St. Paul’s first letter to the
Thessalonians, the oldest of the New Testament writings,
written around the year 51 A.D. Paul writes to encourage
the new Christians there after having preached the Gospel
to them in person. The reason Paul was able to travel so
easily to many places and establish churches was due to
God’s use of the kingdom of Caesar. Under the Romans,
good roads were established throughout the empire, and
seas were made safe from pirates, and there was one common language: Greek. Although the Romans spoke Latin,
they had taken the empire from the Greeks, and since
most of the conquered lands were familiar with it, Greek
was retained as the universal language. Because of this,
Paul could write his letters in Greek, and everyone in the
empire could read them. He could also travel swiftly from
place to place because of the infrastructure built by Roman taxes. So, God makes use of all earthly powers in
establishing His Kingdom.

Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
However, God does not usher in His Kingdom apart from
the human activity of the Church. When Jesus said, “Give
to Caesar what is Caesar’s” He meant, “Be good citizens.” But what does Jesus mean by “Give to God what is
God’s”? We find our answer in Paul’s letter to the church
at Thessalonica, where he refers to the “work of faith, and
labor of love, and endurance in hope of our Lord Jesus
Christ.” We notice here the familiar call to faith, hope,
and love, but what is equally important here are the words
work, labor, and endurance. These words tell us what is
owed to God. First, the Greek word for “work” which
Paul uses is “ergon,” and it means a job, or the work
which is one’s duty. For Christians, faith is more than a
noun, more than an acknowledgment of truth; faith is
action. Faith in action is continuing the work of Jesus to
usher in the Kingdom by declaring God’s love in all we
do. This leads to the labor of love. The Greek word for
“labor” is “kopos,” and refers to energy being exerted to
the point of exhaustion. We are to be exhausted in love, as
Jesus was upon the cross. This kind of love is more than a
feeling; it is action, which gives life, even one’s own life,
to the world. Finally, we endure in hope. The Greek word
for “endurance” is “hypomone,” and means “to endure
hardship, to persevere in patience.” We must not be discouraged in our work for the Kingdom, but must be
strong, persevering and holding on to the promise of God
to bring justice and redemption to all things in the end.
As Christians we recognize our duty to be good citizens,
and we do this best by using all things in service of the
Gospel. In doing so we sanctify the world and usher in
God’s Kingdom. What do we owe to God? We owe Him
the work of faith, the labor of love, and the endurance of
hope. Ours is not to forsake or condemn the world, but to
redeem it by bringing the Kingdom of God into its midst.
In this we give to God what is God’s.

Dear SJOA Families and Friends,
Not too much news to report from the school, other
than an observation of how fast the first two months
of school have gone by! Our first school quarter
ended this past Thursday, October 16. Looking
ahead, we have school Monday, October 20,
through Wednesday, October 22. Students and staff
will then be away from school on a much-deserved
Fall Break from Thursday, October 23, through
Monday, October 27. We return to school on Tuesday, October 28. Please also note we will have 1
p.m. dismissals on both this coming Tuesday, October 21, and Wednesday, October 22, while teachers
conduct teacher/parent conference. We will offer
NYO Aftercare on those 1 p.m. dismissal school
days.
Finally, thank you to those who attended our preschool open house event “Peek-a-Boo” this past Friday evening. The event was a big success and it was
great seeing those families which attended.
Please have a great week.
God bless,
Joe
