County Deer Advisory Council to
discuss 3-year deer population
objectives.
LOCATION: Forest County – Deer population objectives
that will be used to help formulate hunting opportunities
over the next three years will be the topic of discussion at
the Forest County Board Room on October 29th starting at
7:00 PM. While this is a working meeting of the Forest
County Deer Advisory Council, the public is encouraged
to attend and will have an opportunity to discuss issues
and provide comment.
County Deer Advisory Councils are a newly
formed body as part of an effort to provide more public
input on deer management issues and give stakeholders a
greater responsibility in managing local deer numbers.
Councils will also meet in October and December as they
develop a recommendation to the DNR as to how many
deer they would like in their respective county.
Council meetings will develop recommendations
to the DNR regarding deer population objectives in their
respective county, antlerless quotas, and season
structure options. Through their participation, CDAC
members and meeting participants will be given a direct
stake in managing Wisconsin’s deer herd.
Meetings are being held this fall, as will happen
every three years, to develop deer herd population
objective recommendations to the department. Councils
will meet each spring to develop antlerless deer harvest
quotas for deer hunting seasons and consider various
strategies to meet population objectives.
Local department staff will be on hand to present
information and answer any questions and discuss
possible strategies for managing the local deer herd.
Anyone interested in making a statement at the
meeting must pre-register by contacting Alan Harrison,
Forest County CDAC chair at 715-473-3921. In order to
accommodate all who wish to speak, statements will be
limited to three minutes.
Mock accident drill at the
Wabeno Town Hall
Saturday October 18th, 2014 the Wabeno Jr./ Sr.
High FCCLA members are hosting a mock accident at the
Wabeno Town Hall. The event will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the
Wabeno Town Hall. The public is invited to come and
watch! From within the town hall you can watch the training
activity take place outside and enjoy some refreshments
also.
The purpose of the training is to help strengthen
the interpersonal communication skills between the area’s
surrounding agencies, including law enforcement, fire
department, and rescue agencies. The accident is going to
be promoting anti-texting and driving and anti-drinking
and driving. Wabeno high school students will be playing
the roles of victims in the accident. The accident is being
arranged in conjunction with National Teen Driver Safety
Week which begins Sunday October 19th and concludes
on October 25.
Wabeno FCCLA members Kaitlyn Ashbeck,
Abigail Ashbeck, and Hannah Reed along with other
FCCLA students will be using this important event as a
focus for their FCCLA competitive events this year. Abigail
and Kaitlyn put together and planned the mock accident as
their interpersonal communication competitive event.
Hannah is doing an event called advocacy, and she will be
trying to find advocates for anti-texting and driving.
Teenage distracted driving is an issue that not only
Wabeno Jr./Sr. High FCCLA cares deeply about, but it is
also a National FCCLA and Wisconsin FCCLA initiative
project.

Senator Baldwin and Forest
Service Chief Tidwell
visit the Northwoods
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It's a flying squirrel sent
to us by a photographer named Dale. Do you think the
squirrel is named Rocky?
Gordon Connor, left, Chief Tidwell, center, and Senator
Baldwin discuss timber issues in the autumn woods.
By Mike Monte
Senator Tammy Baldwin paid her third visit to
Forest County and the Northwoods in about a year's time.
Baldwin said, after her first visit, that she was going to
make National Forest timber issues one of her top
priorities, and it appears that she is true to her word. With
each visit, she meets with timber industry leaders and she
also has developed a good understanding of what the
issues are, the importance of the timber industry to the
state and the nation, and has a more complete
understanding of how the logging and sawmill industry
works.
On this visit, Senator Baldwin was accompanied

Reasons to “Give”
By Celine Kegley
Last spring I wrote an article talking about the
reasons to run 5K races, telling not only the benefits to the
runner, but also the benefits to the organization putting on
the race.
Now I would like to talk about the reasons to
“give”. Most people probably don’t even think about
“giving” to others. Have we lost the ‘Art of Giving’ along
with the children’s games of marbles and jacks? What got
me thinking about this was when I thought about how my
mother, Mavis Wood, has sponsored almost all of my
brother, Jack, and my races this past summer and last
summer. She paid the entry fee for almost all of the races
we ran. A few of them were free. So far this summer we
have run twelve 5K races and two 10K races.

Just for Guys:
Prostate Health
More than 230,000 new cases of prostate
cancer are diagnosed each year in the U.S. Scientists
have yet to learn how to prevent prostate cancer -- other
than to protect your health in general:
• Eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables
each day. Get at least 2 1/2 cups of vegetables and 2 cups
of fruit per day. Tip: Eating cruciferous vegetables, such
as cabbage, broccoli and radishes, has been shown in
studies to reduce prostate cancer risk.
• Adopt a low-fat diet. Select leaner cuts and
small servings of meat (1 serving equals 3 ounces, about
the size of a card deck), avoid fatty snacks and choose
low-fat dairy foods.
• Limit alcohol. Long-term, heavy drinking has
been linked to increased risk.
• Lose excess weight. Being obese increases
your risk.
• Exercise aerobically most days of the week.

DEATH NOTICES
Lewis (Louie)
Herbert Adams, 69, of
Crandon flew away to his
next great adventure in the "Spirit" helicopter on Friday,
October 10, 2014. He was born in Crandon on August 11,
1945, the son of Herb and Edith (Wilber) Adams.
He graduated from Crandon High School 1964
and served his country in the United States Air Force until
1971, finally returning to his beloved Crandon area to be
near his family and friends. He was an avid hunter,
fisherman and professional "BS'er!" Louie had a deep love
of the outdoors and 4 wheeling with his family and friends.
He was always taking pictures of family, beautiful scenery
and his beloved pets.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years,
Wilma; children, Herb (Lisa) Adams, Amy (Chris) McCorkle,

sisters, Pauline May, Glenda (Bob) Conn (of Crandon), Bart
(Keith) Atkins (Oregon), and Joyce (Jim) Landrum
(Colorado); good friends, Jim and Arkinsaw and so many
more.
Louie was a kind and generous man and he would
do anything to help the ones he loved and cared about. He,
as well as his crazy-spontaneous sense of humor (which
will be carried on by his children and grandchildren), will be
greatly missed by all his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to either
the Forest County Humane Society (701 Industrial Parkway,
Crandon, WI 54520) or the Washburn County Humane
Society (1400 Cottonwood Ave., Spooner, WI 54801).
Louie's wishes were to be cremated with no formal
services. His wishes were for his family and friends to have
a "Celebration of His Life" which will be held Thursday
evening, October 16, 2014, at May's Bar from 4 p.m. to 8
p.m. Please join us in remembering Louie.

Reasons to "Give" Cont. from pg. 1
Jack and I have enjoyed all of the benefits of
running, such as cardiovascular health, meeting new
runners and challenging ourselves to do better each race,
but my mother’s “giving”, by paying our entry fees, has
benefited a lot of other people. Some of the ones
benefiting were: autistic children getting ipads, the
American Cancer Society, the Forest County Humane
Society, Forest County Youth Sports Organizations,
Antigo Youth Organizations, Langlade Boys & Girls Club,
Camp Luther Christian Summer Campers, and several
scholarships. On behalf of everyone that my mother
“gave” to, I would like to “give” her a great big Thank-you!
I often hear people say that they don’t have
anything to “give”, but I don’t believe that. Money isn’t the
only thing that you can “give”. Just look at our community
when a tragedy strikes a family. Last April my sister, Carol
lost her home in Laona to a fire. My daughter, Dezirae and
Dawn & Jimmy from Pack ‘Em Inn “gave” a lot of their time,
their talent (they were excellent at what they did), and their
resources and put together a wonderful Benefit for my
sister. It was unbelievable to see how many local
businesses and individuals “gave” things to help make
her benefit a huge success. Almost all of the businesses
in Crandon and Laona donated to her cause. There are
not enough words to thank everyone that “gave” to the
benefit and for the excellent job that Dezirae, Dawn &
Jimmy did, unselfishly “giving” to help out someone in
need.
Another example of “giving” is the Tribe that I’ve
been working for, for the last 13 years. It is not unusual to
pick up the newspaper and see the Forest County
Potawatomi Tribe “giving” to groups or organizations. It is
also evident of how they “give” by the way their treat their
elders, children, tribal members and tribal employees.
Thanks for all you “give”.
Also, I work at the Crandon School where I see a
lot of the teachers and staff going above and beyond
“giving” to their students, to try and help them succeed. I
see coaches that “give” up their free time to help young
athletes. Rather than sitting on their cozy recliners, in
their warm house, they are out in the heat or cold, rain, or
snow or in a hot gymnasium “giving” young kids an
opportunity to experience something that they can’t
experience playing a video game. I see parents “giving”
all their efforts to get from work to gymnastics classes in
the evenings because their young children really want to
learn how to tumble. Thanks to everyone.
If you still can’t think of any ways that you
personally can “give”, here are some ideas to think about:
Put down your electronic devices and “give” the person
you are with ‘your undivided attention’.
Get off of
Facebook and visit ‘face-to-face’ with someone and “give”
them ‘your ear’; really listen to them or “give” them ‘your
shoulder’ to cry on. “Give” someone a ‘helping hand’.
“Give” some of ‘your blood’ to a blood drive. Get your
kids off of their video games and “give” them ‘some of
your time’. You could take them out running/walking. I
can tell you all kinds of reasons to run! “Give” your
spouse/significant other ‘your understanding’, ‘your
unconditional love’ and ‘your heart’. Too often, when
things get tough in our relationships, we stop “giving” to
each other or stop trying to make it work. “Give” others
‘respect’ and they will “give” it back. “Give” someone a
‘high-five’ for a job well done. “Give” someone a ‘penny
for their thoughts’ or “give” them ‘some food for thought’.
“Give” others ‘your friendship’, ‘your eye-tooth’ for
something or if you have to, “give” them ‘the shirt off your
back’. Just make sure that you have another shirt
underneath it!
All kidding aside, take time to thank all those
individuals and businesses that “give” so much to us
every day, and don’t be afraid to “give.”

WITH GRATITUDE
…so much kindness, there is hardly room for sadness…
We were blessed with a wonderful Mother, and we are blessed by
a caring community, a loving family, and close friends. We are very
grateful to NuRoc Community Healthcare, St. Leonard’s-Laona, the
ladies of St. Joseph’s –Crandon, and Weber-Hill Funeral Home. And we
would be less than her sons if we did not extend THANKS to all who
helped and thought of us during this time.

WISCONSIN ENERGY ASSISTANCE 2014-2015
WISCONSIN'S HOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (WHEAP) provides assistance for
heating costs, electric costs and energy crisis situations. Operating with federal and state
funding, the program provides assistance to approximately 225,000 Wisconsin households
annually. WHEAP assistance is a one-time payment during the heating season (October 1 - May
15). The funding pays a portion of the heating costs. IT IS NOT INTENDED TO COVER THE
ENTIRE ANNUAL COSTS OF YOUR HOME HEATING. The amount of the heating assistance
benefit varies depending on a variety of factors, including the household's size, income and
heating costs. In most cases the heating assistance benefit is paid directly to the household
energy supplier.
ELIGIBILITY
Your household may be eligible for WHEAP and WAP
services based on a number of factors. However, if the
gross income for your household is less than the
amount shown on the following chart, you might be
eligible to receive assistance. Applications for both
programs are accepted at your local WHEAP agency.
Program services are available without regard to race, color, sex,
age, religion, national origin, or mental/physical handicap.
Income for people who are self-employed, farmers or seasonal
workers is based on federal income tax forms for the previous
year.

PIONEER EXPRESS PAGE 20, OCTOBER 13, 2014
Baldwin Visit Cont. from pg. 1
by none other than the Forest Service Chief Tidwell, who
made the trip from Washington to meet with timber
industry leaders and Forest Service personnel on timber
issues.
As we have always said on these pages, there is
not enough timber being cut on the ChequamegonNicolet to maintain a healthy timber industry on a local
level, and the deal made with the federal government by
our county board in the 20's with the federal government
to give control of about 51% of Forest County's land base
in exchange for a viable, sustainable timber industry in
Forest and surrounding counties is not being kept. In
addition, the 25% fund, whereby a fourth of the gross
sales off the forest are paid back to local government, is
not a large enough number to compensate for the loss of
land base and resource. These days, it is the schools that
suffer from the loss of revenue, in addition to the lack of
resources available to local sawmills and logging
contractors.
It has taken years of rhetoric and reams of writing
on the subject, but it does appear that there are people in
the federal government who are listening.
On Wednesday, Chief Tidwell held a press
conference in Wausau, followed by a Timber Round Table
in Rhinelander with northeast Wisconsin forest
stakeholders, followed by a visit to the woods near Laona,
with a tour that started at the Nicolet Hardwoods office.
An entourage of Forest Service employees,
timber people and reporters visited a Nicolet Hardwoods
logging site about a mile from Laona, where the
management practices used by Nicolet Hardwoods and
their predecessor, Connor Lumber and Land were
discussed.
When on the Nicolet Hardwoods logging site,
Gordon Connor talked of Wisconsin being the first state to
incorporate a forest crop law, and talked of the success of
the program.
On this logging site, land records show that the
first timber cutting was in 1935, and he added that this was
a learning experience for all involved. The 1935 cut took
70% of the stand, which meant that the second cut came in
1962. Now, a cut will allow another cut in ten years, with a
volume and value growth of 15% per year. This site has
been cut a total of seven times counting the 1935 cut. It is
still a nice timber stand that can be harvested again in ten
years.
Chief Tidwell said that he approved of the results,
but pointed out that for the Forest Service to cut every ten
years would be too expensive, and they would look at
successive cuts at 20 or even 30 years, and would factor
that time element into the management plan for a site.
Tidwell went on to say that we are lucky to have
the mix of forest lands in our region, with Forest Service,
county, and private timberlands available. He spoke of
coordination between county and federal lands and
suggested that a forester could possibly inspect logging
sites on both ownerships, thereby cutting costs to both
the county and the federal government. Above all, he
said, we must have satisfied purchasers of that timber.
The second site visited was a Forest Service
stand that was more than ready for a cutting, but the
problem is that while a cut was planned for 2002, the sale
was appealed and litigated in court, with the Forest
Service winning the case. The problem is that the cutting
plan had to change as the years of litigation went by, so
more expense was incurred to do more planning in 2013.
The area is currently being prepared for timber sales.
Senator Baldwin said that we all have to work
together to make the national forests successful, and that
she was grateful that Chief Tidwell was here.
Tidwell said that it was an informative trip and
that he looked forward to everybody working together, not
just for today, but for the benefit of future generations.

Wisconsin has plans to respond
to Ebola in Wisconsin
Department of Health Services is Working with the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to Ensure
Health Care Providers are Prepared
MADISON--The Wisconsin Department of Health Services
(DHS), in collaboration with the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC), has plans in place to
respond in the event a case of Ebola virus appears in the
state. There is currently an Ebola outbreak in West Africa;
however, no one has contracted the Ebola virus in
Wisconsin.
"We understand people are concerned about the Ebola virus, especially with a recently diagnosed case in the United
States. While there are no cases of Ebola in Wisconsin, and the risk of contracting it remains low, it's important that medical and
public health professionals are able to respond in the event there is a case in the state," said Karen McKeown, State Health Officer,
"Should someone in the state contract Ebola, DHS will ensure that the public and health care providers receive prompt public
health information."
Since the Ebola virus outbreak began in West Africa, DHS has been assisting health care partners by providing
guidelines for monitoring individuals returning from affected countries in that region. DHS also continues to ensure that all health
care providers are prepared with the appropriate infection control protocols and required precautions for managing an Ebola
patient.
DHS continues to communicate with the CDC for current developments and guidelines and shares that information with
health care providers and local health departments in Wisconsin.
"For the general public, we want to stress that the chances of anyone in Wisconsin contracting the Ebola virus are very
low," McKeown continued. "Ebola is only spread through contact with the body fluids of people who are sick with the virus. It
cannot be transmitted through the air. In fact, influenza is more contagious than the Ebola virus. That said, DHS remains vigilant in
its monitoring of the Ebola virus, and will continue to provide our partners and the public with the most current information and
guidance concerning this disease."
