The 10th 2014 Chinhoyi University of Technology Graduation Ceremony held on Friday October 3, which saw the
President and Chancellor Cde. Robert Gabriel Mugabe

graduating students, their parents, members of the University Community, staff and the local community thronged
the University grounds to witness the Prof.Simbi-led Institution scale to greater heights as never anticipated before.
The diminutive Metallurgy & Chemical Engineer – a
beaming Professor David Jambgwa Simbi had every reason to walk taller than everyone else on a sunny Friday as
the Chancellor capped 130 Agricultural Sciences and
Technology, 64 Art and Design, 961 Business Sciences
and Management, 137 Engineering Sciences and Technology, 109 Hospitality and Tourism, 24 Wildlife, Ecology

and Conservation, 22 Lifelong learning & Development Studies
and 186 Master of Science in Strategic Management graduands
to enter into the University‘s history books as the most successful
Vice Chancellor to date, at a time when the national economic
life seems to be suffocating from Western-backed sanctions.
The colourful day began with melodious songs from the University Choir led by Mr.Sitefia Samambga before the ZRPolice Band
awed the audience especially their percussionist-cum “hosho‖
player who stole the show with his playing but dance-punctuated
antics.
The
1 Graduation itself also started with a hope assuring address by
the recently appointed Adjunct Professor Robson Mafoti who is
the Chinhoyi University of Technology Council Chairman. ―I am
elated to let you know that your University is up to date with its
regulatory contributions to the fiscus,‖ assured Prof.Mafoti and
continued, ― Our financial obligations to NSSA and ZIMRA have
been met to the fullest extent and this is indeed a reflection of the
adherence to the fundamental dictates of good corporate governance.‖
Prof. Mafoti took the opportunity to inform the Chancellor and
those present that the University was in good hands as evidenced
by ―…your Vice Chancellor Professor D.J.Simbi who received
the Zimbabwe Institute of Management Manager of the Year
Award(Public Sector) for Northern Region….went on to win the
Z.I.M. National Manager of the Year: Public Service domain. We
believe winning this coveted award was recognition of the teamwork, commitment to duty, perseverance and determination to
make this University a centre of academic excellence.‖
The reassuring speech by the CUT Council Chairman was
greeted with a tumultuous applause from the crowd which was a
sign of approval. Prof.Mafoti advised the graduands to continue
being part of the Institution by being members of the CUT
Alumni as ― …this continued association will benefit both parties
as enunciated by Shona idiom that says,’ Natsa kwaunobva
kwaunoenda husiku.‘ ―
Professor Simbi urged other organizations such as the
Scientific Industrial Research and Development Centre
(SIRDC) that are providing home grown solutions to
look to CUT for a rich vein of ―…young and talented
researchers who will have been adequately trained.‖
The University‘s Invasive Species Research and Management Unit had also enrolled its first graduate student
researchers to investigate the mycological degradation
of water hyacinth, the water weed that is slowly suffocating our major water bodies. ― The jumping colla or
chain-fruit cholla, a dry-rangeland invasive plant,
brought into the country as an ornamental plant now fast
spreading in semi-arid districts of Matebeleland is also
receiving attention. The Unit is also appealing for funding to investigating the behavior of the Austrian Red
Crayfish that is now decimating the Kapenta fishpopulation in Lake Kariba,‖ added the V.C.
CUT ADOPTS A CREDIT SYSTEM
The Vice Chancellor Professor D.J.Simbi said that the
University adopted a Credit System of Assessment
which he said was being spearheaded by the Quality
Assurance Directorate. He said this while addressing the
10th Graduation Ceremony at which 1 679 graduands
were capped by the President and Chancellor of Chinhoyi University of Technology Cde.R.G.Mugabe on
Friday October 3, 2014.
Professor Simbi also said that the Credit System of Assessment has further stabilized the learning environment
increasing in the process the pace of transformation towards a research driven learning culture. He assured the
congregants that this bonds well for the future of the
University as a leader in technology development and
wealth creation.
Also present during the Graduation Ceremony was the
Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and
Technology Development – Dr.Olivia Nyembesi
Muchena, the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs
Honorable Faber Edmund Chidarikire, the Deputy Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and
Technology Dr.Godfrey Gandawa and the Higher Tertiary Ministry Permanent Secretary and former Principal
of the then Chinhoyi Technical Teachers College Dr.
W.T.Mbizvo, His Worship – the Mayor of the Town of
Chinhoyi Mr.Test Micheals and other Vice Chancellors
from sister Universities in Zimbabwe and/or their representatives.
“our brains must liberate
our economy!”- says Vice
Chancellor
Simbi
Professor
Speaking during the 10th Graduation Ceremony of the University
at the Sports grounds, the Vice Chancellor of the Institution Professor D.J.Simbi said that Zimbabweans were their own liberators
from economy bondage and the aim of the University, ―…is to
attract and retain the best brains Zimbabwe has from among its
sons and daughters. During the liberation war, one theme united
us:‘ We are our own liberators!‘ Today, the same should be said
about our ability to turn around the economy: ‗Our brains must
liberate our economy!‘ Chinhoyi University of Technology and
similar institutions in the country should as a matter of urgency
enter the second phase of the ‗ economic emancipation stage‘ by
promoting graduate research studies that provide technological,
engineering and business solutions.‖

Chinhoyi University of Technology Football Club continues to
sing the blues in the ZIFA Division 2 A. Log leaders humiliated
the Dr.Murungweni-coached team by two goals to nil in a
league game played at CUT Sports grounds over the weekend. There is a need for “the Football Technocrats” to live up
to their nickname and restore some pride for the men’s soccer
team without which, the team may find itself plying its trade in
the unfashionable Division 3 next season.

Chinhoyi University of Technology Student Health
Services, in an effort to improve and expedite student
transfer to the main health facilities when need arises
in the Chinhoyi town and within Zimbabwe acquired a
brand new ambulance – a latest model of a single cab
BT-50. The ambulance is a four wheel drive and will
be handed over to the Department of Student Affairs‘
Student Health Services for immediate use. According
to the Transport Manager Mr.Z.Mutangi, the ambulance purchase was long overdue and it will solely be
used by the University Health Services. He also informed CUT Weekly that the University had bought
another 65 seater bus to add onto its fleet to make
them a total of six. The acquisition of another bus will
help ease transport challenges the University was experiencing during times when some of its buses are
under services or have gone for field trips with students. CUT Weekly applauds the efforts of the University and it is also anticipated that the Institu-
tion will purchase high utility vehicles like
seven tone UD trucks and Quantum kombis.

It‘s a pity that over a million of people today are becoming
victims of drug and alcohol abuse each and every day. Surprisingly people ignore it as it is not there at all, yet the use and
misuse of alcohol and other drugs is one of the more controversial issues in our society and often a source of conflict between the sections of our society.
There are quite a number of consequences of use and misuse of
alcohol and other drugs such as in middle-aged drinking it
impairs memory i.e drinking doubles the risk of memory loss
in later life, high criminal case risks due to the euphoria (false
excitement), death only to mention a few. As for smokers they
develop heart diseases, stroke and cancer more than nonsmokers. But however smoking affect non-smokers through
passive smoking as the second-hand smoke is more lethal.
Second-hand smoke triggers nicotine cravings and directly
alters brain function, similar to actually smoking a cigarette
and children are the most vulnerable victims of second-hand
smoke. Children exposed to this suffer respiratory diseases,
asthma attacks and infections at an increased rate so smoker be
RESPONSIBLE AND CONSIDERATE!!!!!!!!
FREE for the weekends simply means making the right
choices on everything you do and who your friends are but
young people mistake it for taking and abusing drugs. One fact
for sure once an addict you don‘t have hope and have NO control over your own life. Alcohol and other drugs are powerful
substances with a potential to harm users or to attempt them
into over-indulgence it is important to take care and responsibility of yourself when considering using them and to avoid
taking any risks which you might regret later.
Let’s stand up together in building a
safer, healthier community by preventing and treating alcoholism and drug
abuse!!!!!!
