Catholic School Policy
School-aged children of OLC attend may attend either Holy Family Regional Catholic School in
Aston or Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic School in Swarthmore. Our Parish does subsidize
Catholic education for all parishioners of OLC who are active and contributing members of the
Parish. Please note: Since our Parish School closed abruptly in June 2011, our school families began attending several Catholic elementary schools in the area. In fairness to those children currently attending the other schools, however, we will consider them “grandfathered” and continue
to subsidize their education in accordance with the policy about attendance and parish support.
Children who attend Public School are requested to register in our PREP Program beginning in
first grade to seventh grade. PREP meets on Tuesday evenings from September to May from 6:30
to 7:45p.m. There is a minimal tuition request to defray costs of the materials. No one is denied
access to PREP because of an inability to pay.
Our New Parish Mission Statement
We, the members of Our Lady of Charity Catholic Church, are devoted to building the Kingdom of God in our
neighborhoods. Relying on the example of Mary, the first and best disciple, and our parish Patroness, we strive to encourage and promote discipleship by making her Son Jesus present to all through Word, Sacrament, love and service.

October is the Month of the Holy Rosary
In Preparation for the World Meeting of Families, September 22-27, 2015
O dear Jesus, I humbly implore You to grant Your special graces to our family. May our home be the shrine of peace, purity,
love, labor and faith. I beg You, dear Jesus, to protect and bless all of us, absent and present, living and dead.O Mary, loving Mother of Jesus, and our Mother, pray to Jesus for our family, for all the families of the world, to guard the cradle of the
newborn, the schools of the young and their vocations. Blessed Saint Joseph, holy guardian of Jesus and Mary, assist us by
your prayers in all the necessities of life. Ask of Jesus that special grace which He granted to you, to watch over our home at
the pillow of the sick and the dying, so that with Mary and with you, heaven may find our family unbroken in the Sacred
Heart of Jesus. Amen.

Greetings from Father Izzo
FORTY HOURS DEVOTION: A BLESSING FOR OUR PARISH
I am most grateful for the excellent attendance of our Forty Hours Devotions this year, especially factoring in the “crazy” weather that was last Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Following the devotions on Tuesday night, it was overheard by one of our visiting priests
heading back over to the rectory afterwards, that a parishioner summed up that evening’s
sermon by saying, “Wasn’t that lovely?” I couldn't agree more. And that said it all! To all
those who assisted to make our devotions, yet again, a blessing for our Parish, know that I
am grateful for all you do.
RCIA BEGAN LAST WEEK: NOT TOO LATE FOR OTHERS TO JOIN
Mrs. Wilson and I met our Candidates and hopeful Catechumens last week, and it’s not too
late for others to join us. What is most important is getting to know who is interested in
completing their Sacraments, or those who wish to join the Catholic Faith. Schedules are
also important because we strive to assist families in scheduling around their schedules (as
best we can). So far, we have received requests from two adults who wish to make their
Confirmation when Bishop Fitzgerald comes in November. As always, any one who is interested should contact either myself or Mrs. Wilson about the Sacraments celebrated here
at OLC.
BISHOP MICHAEL FITZGERALD IS COMING TO OLC FOR CONFIRMATION
I can’t remember if I gave this updated announcement yet. About three weeks ago, I
learned that Bishop Michael Fitzgerald will be coming in place of Most Rev. Daniel Thomas to celebrate Confirmation for our Parishioners on Tuesday, November 25 at 6:30 p.m.
MASS FOR ALL SOULS: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2 AT 10:30 MASS
Last year, we celebrated our Parish Mass for Deceased Parishioners on the First Sunday of
November. This year we are going to continue that tradition, and it is especially nice that
the actual Commemoration of All Souls is that day. So if you’ve had a loved one whose has
died during this past year, or someone you knew from our Parish who died and was buried
from here, try to come to the 10:30 Mass on November 2. We have invited the families of
our deceased parishioners to join us as well.
YYAM—I—AM: OLC’S YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULT GROUP
We are focusing this Fall on our forming the Youth part of our Program. So, calling all
middle and high school students of OLC! Jess DuBois, our Youth Coordinator, is looking
for you. YYAM meets here at OLC on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month, at 3:00 p.m.
in the Rectory Meeting Room.
On October 26: We’re having Pizza and Youth-Centered discussion on: What is Prayer and
how can we pray better?

Reflections by Fr. Leonard Peterson
Twenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time, October 19, 2014
A comedian to his audience: “I joined a health club last year and spent about four hundred bucks. I haven’t
lost a pound. Apparently, you have to go there.”
Talk about missing the point! Yet that failure is the dominant fault of the Pharisees throughout St. Matthew’s
gospel. Writing as he did for Jewish converts to Christianity, Matthew wanted not only to illustrate that mistake of their former teachers, but also how Christ Jesus is the answer to all their questions. Many Catholics
today are also missing the point in the way they make their moral decisions and they are passing on their error to their children. Here is a segment from the book Still the Best Hope by Dennis Prager, in which he
quotes from a column by David Brooks of the New York Times:
“What has supplanted belief in the existence of moral truths are feelings about what is moral. Many children
have been raised to ask, ‘How do I feel about it?’ rather than ‘Is it right or wrong?’ …This has been confirmed by an extensive study of Americans ages eighteen to twenty-three conducted by the sociologist Christian Smith of Notre Dame University and discussed by New York Times columnist David Brooks: ‘When
asked to describe a moral dilemma they had faced, two-thirds of the young people either couldn’t answer the
question or described problems that are not moral at all…Moral thinking didn’t enter the picture, even when
considering things like drunken driving, cheating in school or cheating on a partner. ‘I don’t really deal
with right and wrong that often’ is how one interviewee put it…
The default position, which most of them came back to again and again, is that moral choices are just a matter of individual taste. As one put it, ‘I mean, I guess what makes something right is how I feel about it. But
different people feel different ways, so I couldn’t speak on behalf of anyone else as to what’s right or
wrong.’ (David Brooks concludes): ‘Morality was once revealed, inherited and shared, but now it’s thought
of as something that emerges in the privacy of your own heart.’”
We have been enlightened by Baptism into Christ. We know the point of today’s Scripture Readings is to
emphasize that there truly is an objective morality, one based in God, and that it is still, for every generation
presently alive and those yet to be born, a morality that has been revealed, inherited, and meant to be shared.
To think otherwise is to think like the benighted Pharisees. Put another way, it is to pretend that your health
club membership card itself is what gets you in shape.

PREP News
From Mrs. Eileen Wilson, DRE
One of the attributes that makes us truly
Catholic-Christians is service to our neighbors.
Each year, the Nutritional Development Services
asks that we participate in one or more of their
food drives. To that end, the children in the PREP
have been bringing in peanut butter and jelly for a
local food bank. Soon their donations will feed the
hungry in our area. We ask God to look with favor
upon those who will eat the peanut butter and jelly
and to bless the families in our parish for their generosity.

Dear Friends in Christ,
“Today vast numbers of people still
do not know Jesus Christ.” Pope Francis begins his
message for this year’s celebration of World Mission
Sunday with these words. And he quickly offers us
the way to make a joy-filled, life-giving difference:
“World Mission Sunday is a privileged moment
when the faithful of various continents engage in
prayer and concrete gestures of solidarity in support
of the young Churches in mission lands.”
Today, our Archdiocesan family celebrates this
“privileged moment” joining with our brothers and
sisters around the world who will gather at the
Lord’s Table to celebrate, with great joy, our common vocation as Missionaries. Our prayers and concrete gestures of solidarity will help build local
churches, like the church in Mongolia, the world’s
youngest Catholic Church, and churches across the
globe. Through the work of missionaries in these
churches, and their witness to Christ, the needy receive practical help and experience God’s love and
mercy, His hope and peace.
Your prayers and material support will help the
Pontifical Mission Society for the Propagation of the
Faith, the Holy Father’s chief missionary arm, to provide resources to missionaries who proclaim the
Gospel and offer help to our brothers and sisters
throughout 1,150 mission dioceses. As I said in the
past, “We need to bring Jesus Christ to the whole
world and the whole world to Jesus Christ. Our mission flows straight from the inner life of the Trinity.
God sent his Son. The Son sends his Church. And the
Church sends us. We need to be missionaries.” No
work of the Church is more central to her reason for
being.
I thank you in advance for your generous response
to the needs of others. May World Mission Sunday
offer each one of us an opportunity to accomplish
both, as we share the joy of the Gospel and help all
people in need with our fervent prayer and our generous hearts!
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap.
Archbishop of Philadelphia
