PRESIDENT'S REPORT
Glad that September is here and members are coming back into the branch. Our last three months were very quiet but
the expenses still had to be paid and we needed to cash out some investments to keep us afloat.
Comrade Jaye Bevan was installed as our Past President at the General Meeting on Sept.18, welcome to the team.
We applied for an extension to our Liquor License for the back parking lot for a day, and it was approved we had a great
Patio Party thanks to all that came out and supported it and to the many volunteers who without their help it never
would have happened. People are already asking when the next one is going to be, weather is always a big factor, and
thirty days notice must be given when applying, but it will happen again, just don't know when.
Branch members held a Crock Pot Lunch on Friday Sept. 19th for the great price of $4., for a first time event I thought it
went over really well. The Ladies Auxiliary are planning a lunch in the clubroom on Friday, October 10th and again on
Friday, October 24th starting at noon for the low cost of $6.00, come out and support please.
I hope you are listening to 89.7 FM radio, we have many advertisements on there for the Branch and Ladies Auxiliary
events, the electronic sign in the lounge has been fixed thanks to Kevin Kimmerly, and events are advertised on the tables, thanks to John Dempster. Our Missile editor, Normalee makes sure that all events are published and we have it on
our website but still people tell me that they didn't know anything about what's happening. Bob and his team mention it
at every meat draw and when I speak to people I tell them everything that's going on, we also have an email list that I
keep people updated. If you have any ideas of how else to get the message out let me know.
Today is Sept. 23 so we are busy getting our reports into Normalee so she can get them printed for you for the first of the
month, but things don't stop tonight we have Ladies Night first one of the season, and Friday, September 26 is our Annual Open House and S und ay, S eptem b er 28 is th e District Drumhead in Trenton
Looking forward to catching up with those who have been away at trailers, cottages or vacation .
Take care of yourself and your family,
Respectfully Submitted,
Josephine

MEMBERSHIP REPORT
The Early Bird campaign is now underway and progressing as expected. We still have not achieved the number of comrades who renewed their membership the first month over last year but are closing in on it. I will
not know the exact number until the end of the month. For those of you who have taken the time to renew
your membership this month, thank you.
I do have a new assistant who is helping me in the Membership Office by the name of Beth Finch. If you see
her around say hello as she is a great help.
Do not forget that if you pay your Membership Dues during the Early Bird period, September, October and
November, you do stand a chance of winning a free year from paying dues with each monthly draw. If you
do not pay during this period then you lose out. Winners will be drawn at each General Meeting and advised
by mail.
As previously stated, your dues are $55.00 up to January 31st 2015. After this date they increase to $60.00.
1ST VICE PRESIDENTS REPORT
I had the pleasure of going to Plattsburg the weekend of 12/13/14th September where I have attended for the
past several years to see the re-enactment of the battle of 1812-1814.
The Royal Canadian Legion Pipe Band has also attended this past 2 years and performed exceptionally in
the march past and at the evening concert. It was not the best of days on the Saturday, as it rained for most
of the day. The band was the only one who foresaw the weather and was dressed for the occasion. The only
disappointment was the cancellation of Beat Retreat in which our band would have played a part.
We did hold our first Friday lunch in the Legion and it went very well. We had quite a number of Seniors
who took advantage of the lunch and a number of them are asking when the next one is to happen. Unfortunately I do not have the next date but the Ladies Auxiliary will host the next one which I believe will happen
in October. Watch for the date and come on out.
Having taken over House and Property I have been busy in getting 169 Hibernia cleaned out, repainted and
ready for a new tenant. This has now been achieved and a new tenant chosen

POPPY CAMPAIGN UPDATE
Hello Comrades,
“The Poppy Campaign is the foundation of our Remembrance Program. We provide Canadians with
the opportunity to remember by providing them with a Poppy and to participate at a Remembrance
Day service. Canadians are generous when they see our Poppy Volunteers on the street and the collection trays in the stores. It is through the Poppy Campaign and the generosity of our fellow citizens
that in addition to providing assistance to Veterans and their families, we foster the Tradition of Remembrance amongst our youth, the leaders of tomorrow. We, as members of The Royal Canadian
Legion, strive to keep the memory alive of the 117,000 Canadian men and women who paid the supreme sacrifice in the service of Canada during war and on subsequent operations since Korea.
(From the introduction, Poppy Manual, July 2013)
When we became members of Branch 133, we made a commitment, “to strive by all proper means to
promote the work of the organization, including active participation in poppy campaigns.” I urge you to
participate in this year’s campaign by –‘
Donating your time to tag. The tagging campaign takes place November 6 th 7th and 8th. The Ladies
Auxiliary will have the sign-up boards ready by October 7th. They will be posted in the Legion’s east
entrance. If you can’t get to the Legion to sign up, please call Linda Bevan 905-372-7197 or Judy Elliot 905-372-9666. They would be happy to post your name, date and time on the board.
Preparation for the November 11th Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph is underway. The parade will form up at the Legion at 10.00 a.m. March off will take place at 10:15 a.m. If you would like to
lay a wreath of remembrance, please call me.
I am looking for drivers who are willing to deliver the poppy boxes to stores and businesses and to fill
up these boxes on a regular basis. The boxes will be in the stores from October 31 to November 10 th.
Please call me 905-377-1527, or email [email protected]
I look forward to your support in making this year’s campaign a success,
Iris Milne-2nd Vice President and Poppy Chair
Correction Notice
My apologies, please note that in my letter to wreath donors I mistakenly said that the
wreaths would be presented at the Cenotaph on Sunday, November 11. This is incorrect, the Remembrance Day service is on Tuesday, November 11.

Canadian Thanksgiving happens on the second Monday in October, and officially is the Canadian
holiday to give thanks at the close of the harvest season. It was on Thursday, January 31, 1957, that the
Canadian Parliament proclaimed:
“A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been
blessed – to be observed on the 2nd Monday in October.”

Cobourg Legion Pipes and Drums,
September Report
I would like to meet the guy who said that summers were for languid days of beach reading, catching
up on your tan and maybe a little pick-up baseball and a BBQ with your friends. Obviously he didn’t
have anything to do with a pipe band! July and August were two very busy months for the Cobourg
Legion pipers and drummers and I would wager that any reading being done was more likely sheet
music than -------fan magazines. We started the July with the very popular Canada Day Parade, then
changed gears almost immediately for a CLP&D first, a fund raising yard sale in the Legion parking
lot. It was a perfect day, with tremendous support both in donations received and purchases made, all
in aid of raising funds for our 2015 East Coast Pipe Band trip. We are putting considerable effort into
creating opportunities to offset our costs for this venture, and really appreciate the efforts being made
by many to get us to our goal. The month ended with pipe band support of the Justin Williams parade
on July 19, when he graciously shared the Stanley Cup, and other pieces of hard-won hockey hardware, with what seemed like most of Cobourg and area on the King Street/Victoria Park parade route.
August produced several highlights of its own, starting with our traditional appearance at Extendicare
nursing home complex on July 12. Wearing summer parade kit, we returned to the Legion after playing and had one of the best dressed practice sessions in the parking lot that we have ever had, with only a couple of curious questions about why we were so well dressed just to practice. On August 19 we
hosted a number of Port Hope Legion Pipe Band members at another practice session, this one in
preparation for the presentation of another CLP&D first, the Celtic Comrades Concert in Victoria Park
on August 21. Conceived as an opportunity to share performance playing time with our Port Hope Legion piper and drummer neighbours, it was also an chance for highland dancers, fiddlers and singers
to entertain Cobourg and area residents. It was very well attended and there is a very real chance that
we will repeat the offering next year.
We concluded the month with a traditional appearance at the Victoria Park Band Shell, as guests of
the Cobourg Concert Band. A shared program of popular tunes gave both bands a chance to entertain
individually and collectively, much to the delight of the many citizens gathered for the final concert of
the band shell season. Remarkably, the Cobourg Legion Pipes and Drums mustered 15 pipers for the
evening’s performance, the most sporrans to have put on a performance in a very long time. The
Cobourg Concert Band is always a pleasure to play with, and we always look forward to these opportunities. The two bands will, in early September, make their way to Plattsburg, New York, to take part in
another shared tradition, that being weekend participation in parades and performances marking the
War of 1812. The CPL&D have had this pleasure for a number of years, and it is always a good public
relation’s exercise, and a lot of fun.
The fall parade season is almost upon us, and we are already lining up events and dates. This is our
primary source of fund-raising, monies raised being used to help us purchase uniforms and other
needs for our members. As you may know, we are also fund-raising for our 2015 band trip to the Maritimes, where we will parade and play with a number of local pipe bands, attend the College of Piping
and Drumming, and generally spread the good word about Cobourg. We will share our preparatory
activities with readers as we approach July, 2015, and as we undertake them. As always, we appreciate
greatly the support that we enjoy from Legion members.

Cobourg Legion Pipes and Drums,
October Report
The CLP&D begins the fall season with a growing sense of the significance of their major 2015 goal.
Never before has the pipe band undertaken a “road tour”, and now, because of the combined efforts of
many members, we are about to do so. The objective of the East Coast Tour is primarily to carry the
good name of the pipe band and its hometown to communities of Canada’s right hand coast in July of
next year. There we will also foster the fun and good will that is at the heart of Celtic culture, and entertain and learn and grow as a band. The Celtic connections that will be made will doubtless result in
the name of Cobourg, and all that it has to offer, becoming well known in yet another part of Canada.
It will be an expensive undertaking but one which band members have embraced, as evident in the
fund raising activities that have already been undertaken, and which are being planned. September
began with a special appearance at the McFarlane Family Reunion, held at the Baltimore home of
Cameron and Faye. Over fifty family and guests were entertained by the band’s appearance, which
clearly raised the bar on reunion entertainment. The following weekend saw the band return to Plattsburgh, New York, where the largest parade in the War of 1812 Commemorative Weekend’s history entertained citizens from both countries. The evening performance by the Cobourg Concert Band and
the Cobourg Legion Pipes and Drums, at the beautifully restored Strand Theatre, wowed a capacity
crowd of almost 1000 people. It was another example of a shared belief that music makes for good
neighbours, good friends and memorable experiences. An appearance by the pipes and drums at the
Legion Open House concluded the month.
Planning is a now well underway for the busiest season in the band’s playing schedule. Not quite time
yet for Santa Claus parades, it is, however, a period for practicing and polishing what will be offered
during November. The band is also deciding which of the many appearance requests we can accommodate, there being at least 9 so far. That list will be published in next month’s report. What isn’t up
for debate, though, will be the band’s participation in Remembrance Day recognitions. The Alderville
Cenotaph service usually begins the period, followed by the Cobourg Remembrance Day Service on
November 11 at our cenotaph. The band has an additional duty which it carries out with dignity when
it visits a number of area schools to share this service of recognition and remembrance with elementary and secondary school students. Always well received, it is another of our contributions to keeping
the memory of our veterans alive and relevant.
In a future article in this publication we will outline the particulars of the Cobourg Legion Pipes and
Drums East Coast Oddysy Tour of 2015. Much has been planned for but it remains an organic entity,
with additions and changes being made that continue to expand and enliven the opportunity. We will
be undertaking various fund raising offerings and activities, with the hope of making it as feasible as
possible for everyone to take part. Your help will no doubt be solicited, and it is hoped that you will
help us carry the name of Cobourg and its Royal Canadian Legion to Canada’s Maritime Provinces in
2015.

that the origins of "Trick'O'Treating" can be
traced back to early celebrations of All Souls'
Day in Britain?
The poor would go from door-to-door, begging for socalled "soul cakes". Over time, the custom changed and
children became the beggars, receiving apples, sweet
buns and money. The tradition migrated over the
Atlantic Ocean and quickly became entrenched in
American celebrations of Halloween.

Hello Comrades,
I hope that you have enjoyed your summer, I certainly have and am looking forward to a great fall.
I continue efforts to improve the appearance of the Missile Publication and opportunities to assist the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 133.
I would like your feedback by completing a survey regarding the printing of the Missile bulletin. Please complete & submit
by October 31’2014 .
I realize that some people need to have the printed copy as they do not have access to computer, however, many people do
prefer to read the Missile online and/or print off pages required. I would happily set-up a distribution list for those who do
not wish a printed copy but rather an email notice.
In my recent position, I print approximately 200 copies which may vary 18-26 pages (double sided) per month which is dependent on the Legion activities.
My estimated costs are
2600 paper sheets per month @ avg. cost of $54.46 for 5000 sheets =$23.66 per month or $283.92 yearly min.
Toner cartridges costs vary in range from $160.00 to $350.00 per 6000 copies dependent on copier.
printer repairs (drums, cleaning etc.)
Please detach, and check off your preference, drop in the President’s or Bulletin Mailbox (located in the Club Room) at the
Cobourg Legion Branch # 133.
Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey in an effort to reduce Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 133 expenses.
I will provide the results of the survey prior to applying changes to the current method.
Receive email to advise the Missile is ready for perusal.
