Finland stands at number 1 in the world for its educational system. Annika’s coed school has about 600 pupils and they do not wear uniforms. Most students attend high school, but attendances is not compulsory after the age of 16. Voting, driving, and drinking are legal at 18. Students can make their own schedules for school and must complete 75 courses and sit national exams. School is free and a free hot lunch is served to all students. All students must at least learn 2 languages in addition to Finnish – Swedish and English. In general, mores are relaxed. There is very little small talk, students call teachers by their first names. People making small talk would be considered crazy! Announcements!! Johan spoke of the Sixtus Lodge Working Bee – and of the enchantment of the area. President David will be going and offers 3 places in his car on a first come, first served basis – Give him a call! Morva will lead the group to Cross Hills Gardens the next day and offers spots in her car on the same basis! Join in the fun! Car pooling is always a great idea ! Three minutes: Stu Schwartz spoke of his recent trip where he ticked the US immigration box “visit to friends and family” rather than the “holiday” box and notes that US immigration knows there is a difference! His very busy week with many family members saw several wedding anniversaries, and birthdays – including Phyllis’ father’s 100th celebration on Stu’s birthday. He noted that he perhaps gained 3 kilos with all the cakes and goodies, but spent light amounts of cash on 4 pair of shoes and cheap drugs (of the legal kind)! He will fill us in on more at a later date. Parting Thought: Alcohol has taken a lot out of me – But I have taken a lot more out of alcohol! – Johan Bonnevie.
