BENGALI LANGUAGE CLUB
1st to 6th graders
This is a language learning club for Bengali language. Now there
is a possibility for those pupils with Bangladeshi background to
learn Bengali as language in academic environment.
The club is for both beginners and those who have already
some level of Bengali language proficiency. Teaching is mostly
in Bengali, but English also might be used to explain unfamiliar terms and topics if necessary.
Thursdays at 14:45–15:30

Tuition fee is to be announced later. The teacher will be paid
by the parents of the pupils.

MATEMATIIKKAKERHO / MATH CLUB
3.–4.-luokkalaisille, max 16 oppilasta / 3rd to 4th grades, max 16 students
Tammikuussa käynnistyy Englantilaisen koulun matematiikkakerho. Ohjaajina toimivat
kaksi matematiikan opiskelijaa Helsingin Yliopistolta. Kerho on kaksikielinen.
A mathematics club of the English School
starts in January. The club will be taught by
two Mathematics students from the University
of Helsinki. The club will be bilingual.
Matikkakerho pidetään
torstaisin klo 14.15–16.00.
9.1. alkaen kuuden viikon ajan.
Viimeinen kerta on hiihtolomaa edeltävällä
viikolla 13.2.
Thursdays at 2:15–4.00 pm
The meetings will start on 9th of January and
continue weekly for six weeks. The last time
is in the week before the Winter Holiday on
Thursday the 13th of February.
Matikkakerho soveltuu kaikille, erityisesti oppilaille, joille matematiikka on hankalaa. Kerhossa ei käydä läpi tavanomaista matematiikkaa, eikä harjoitella laskemista. Sen sijaan
kerhossa saa uudenlaisen kuvan siitä, mihin
kaikkeen matematiikka liittyy. Kerhossa pääset
rakentamaan oman salakirjoitusjärjestelmän,
tutkimaan seteleiden aitoutta, pelaamaan
matemaattisia pelejä ja muuta kivaa.
The Math Club is open for everyone, especially for those with difficulties in Mathematics.
We don’t practice usual math or routine calculations. The club is an opportunity for students to see in a new way where Mathematics can be used. In the club you’ll get to build
your own encryption system, learn how to tell
fake bank notes from real ones, play mathematical games and other interesting things.
Kerhossa oppilaat pääsevät itse vaikuttamaan
kerhon sisältöön. Oppilaat valitsevatkin joka
kerta annetuista vaihtoehdoista seuraavan kerran aiheen!
The students have a role in deciding what
we’ll be doing in the club. The students can
choose the topic for next time from the given
choices!

LUONNONTIEDEKERHO / SCIENCE CLUB

Mistä maapallo on tehty? Mistä elämä sai
alkunsa? Mitä kivi on? Miltä näyttivät ensimmäiset eläimet?
Luonnontiedekerhossa muun muassa katsellaan mikroskoopilla pieniä eliöitä ja tehdään
oma sormus hopeasta. Viimeisellä kerralla
käydään eläinmuseossa. Kerhoa ohjaa kaksi
luonnontieteen opiskelijaa Helsingin yliopistosta.
Keskiviikkoisin klo 14:15–16:00 26.2.–2.4.
Museon sisäänpääsymaksu 5 euroa, sormus
10 euroa.
What is the earth made of? How did life begin? What is rock made of? What did the
first animals look like?
In the Science Club you can, for example,
study micro-organisms with a microscope
and make your own silver ring. During the
last week there is a trip to the Natural History Museum of Helsinki. The instructors are
two science students from the University of
Helsinki.

SHAKKIKERHO / CHESS CLUB

Starting on Tuesday 21.1.TBA, at Mäntytie.
Englantilaisen koulun shakkikerho kokoontuu viikoittain toukokuun puoleen väliin asti. Kerhoon
on tervetullut jokainen shakista kiinnostunut riippumatta pelitasosta. Kerho ei edellytä shakin sääntöjen aiempaa tuntemista. Kerhossa saa käydä
säännöllisesti, satunnaisesti tai vaikkapa vain tutustamassa. Kerhoon saa tulla koulupäivän päätyttyä ja
sieltä saa myös lähteä oman aikataulun mukaisesti.
Chess Club meets weekly until mid-May. All who
are interested in chess are welcome to join the club
regardless of the level of knowledge. There is no requirement for mastering the chess rules to join the
club. You may attend the club regularly, occasionally
or you may come and see whether you like it or not.
You may join the club after your lessons and you
may leave according to your own schedule.
Vaikka kerho on varsin vapaamuotoinen, innokkaimmille se tarjoaa mahdollisuuden nousta Suomen mestaruus -tasolle asti. Englantilainen koulu
onkin voittanut shakin koulujoukkueiden ala-asteiden Suomen mestaruuden viisi kertaa peräkkäin
2009–2013.Yläasteiden mestaruuksia on kolme,
2011–2013 ja 1–3-luokkien mestaruuksia kaksi
2011 ja 2012.
Although the club is not strictly organized, it does
offer an opportunity to reach even Finnish championship level playing for those who are interested.
The English School has actually won the Elementary
School Team Chess Championship games five times
in a row, 2009–2013. We also have won three Middle School Team Chess Championships, 2011–2013
and two 1–3 class championships 2011 and 2012.

TAIDEILMAISUKERHO / MULTI-ART EXPRESSION CLUB
3–6 luokkalaisille / from 3rd to 6th graders. Min 8 oppilasta/students, max 15 oppilasta/students
Miltä musiikki näyttää? Minkä
muotoinen on kardemumman
tuoksu? Millaista on maalata
valolla? Miten liikkuu sininen väri?
What does music look like? What
kind of shape does cardamom
smell have? How to paint with
light? How does blue color move?
Oletko kiinnostunut teatterista,
luovasta kirjoittamisesta, kuvataiteesta tai vaikkapa musiikista? Entä
millaista olisi kokeilla niitä kaikkia
yhdessä? Monitaiteisessa kerhossa
tutustutaan eri aisteihin tekemällä
“laboratoriokokeita” taiteellisilla
menetelmillä. Tutkimusvälineinä
käytetään eri taiteenalojen harjoitteita, jotka perustuvat kuvataiteeseen, draamaan, musiikkiin ja liikkeeseen. Mitään erityistaitoja et
siis tarvitse, ainoastaan avoimen
ja tutkivan mielen.
Are you interested in theatre, creative writing, visual arts or music?
Are you interested in doing all
of them simultaneously? In the
multi-art form club we learn to
know our senses by performing
“laboratory tests” with artistic
methods. As research equipment
we use exercises of various art
forms based on visual arts, drama, music and movement. You
don’t need any special skills, the
only requirement is to be open
and curious.
