WILLOW BOB debuted September 28th in the same race as the third place finisher, Trini Lime and was one position better than that rival but the winner was gone; he stayed on well suggesting the extension to six furlongs here will be helpful. TRINI LIME was thought to be good enough to win first time out but faltered at the most important time and gave up the second spot to Willow Bob; for this second start, Contreras is sticking with him at a half furlong farther. COACHELLA VALLEY was in this category at seven furlongs last time and was four wide and hung at the most crucial time; she remains a threat and is fresh. ARAGORN AMI had a complete letdown in her return to the races August 27th and then was farther back when she tried turf last time; Contreras is sticking with her. CABO QUEEN lacked room in an event September 14th and finished fifth; most recently, she had a better performance; she was closing well on turf and she finished just in behind Big Brown Brookski; she moves to poly track here and seeks her initial win of the campaign. BIG BROWN BROOKSKI was second in a starter event September 6th at seven furlongs on Poly track in a race that will give her some standing here; she lost the lead late after attending what was too fast a pace; most recently, she committed to a speed style on turf in this category and was beaten late by a better performer. SUNTRACER a homebred for Team Block, is a six year old by Kitten’s Joy coming in for trainer Chris Block; he was close by behind The Pizza Man at Arlington in July but then was far behind that rival in a subsequent test; he reclaimed positive form under Florent Geroux at Kentucky Downs last time at this very distance when rallying from tenth to win narrowly despite an adventurous stretch tour where he ducked in front of War Dancer; he won at the expense of a rushing Pyrite Mountain; a shift here is made to Carlos H. Marquez Jr. BROWN PANTHER a six year old homebred by Group 1 winner, Shirocco, comes in for trainer Thomas Dascombe and once again, Richard Kingscote has the mount; he scored his most significant victory in the Group 1 Irish St. Leger September 14th at the Curragh at a mile and three quarters under 137 lbs. as a longshot; he beat the favourite by six and a half lengths; he was reserved off the early pacemaker and then quickened in the lane for his third victory of the season; he indicated a measure of his class at Ascot in June when he was elevated to third spot in the Group 1 Gold Cup at two and a half miles; he will be shortening here to just a mile and a half and dropping significant weight. Oxley. WAR DANCER is a four year old being introduced to Woodbine by Diamond M Stable for trainer Kenneth McPeek; he is a four time winner on turf and has scored at both the Grade 2 and Grade 3 level; in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer August 17th, he was rated throughout when fourth against the difficult Main Sequence; most recently at Kentucky Downs in the $600,000 Grade 3 Kentucky Turf Cup, he moved three wide at the top of the stretch as if he would have a say in the outcome then was inconvenienced in mid stretch when the rallying winner, Suntracer, came over in his path; he lost some momentum and settled for third; the rider’s claim of foul was disallowed; Contreras takes over here. HILLSTAR a four year old Danehill Dancer colt, comes in for Sir Michael Stoute, ten time Champion trainer who has had success here; he had the distinction of being a Group 2 winner of the King Edward in just his fourth career start; after four consecutive runner up finishes, he broke through for the first time this year in the Arc Trial Legacy Cup, a Group 3 event at Newbury where Ryan Moore had him quicken about two furlongs from home and he was clear at the end of the well regarded filly Tasaday, from Godolphin Stable; he had a good training session on the E. P. Taylor Turf course Friday morning settling in quite nicely for his North American debut; lasix is added; Moore who had a significant winning ride in this race last year aboard Joshua Tree retains the mount. PYRITE MOUNTAIN a former local stakes winner, competed most recently against some of these at Kentucky Downs in the $600,000 Kentucky Turf Cup; he was tenth in the early going; Suntracer moved before him to get the lead in the stretch but he was closing furiously from the outside and missed narrowly in a peak performance at a mile and a half for Todd Pletcher; he comes in for Bortolazzo Stable; Jamie Spencer has been named. BIG BLUE KITTEN comes in for Kenneth L. and Sarah K Ramsey; he is a six year old homebred by Kitten’s Joy; he is a two time Grade 1 winner; he finished a tight second in the Grade 1 Turf Classic in September of 2013 and maintained most of his form as he was fourth beaten just a couple of lengths in that event most recently when the difficult Main Sequence was extending his winning streak to three in a row since coming to North America; Joel Rosario takes over for Chad Brown in this Woodbine introduction. REPORTING STAR is well known throughout the country having competed in the Western Derby series last season; he took a runner up finish in the Canadian Derby in Edmonton and a third place finish in the B. C. Derby in Vancouver; since relocating here under the care of Pat Parente for Copper Water Thoroughbred Company, he has adjusted well; his winning streak was broken when he went into stakes company in the Grade 2 Sky Classic but his ability to carry his speed was obvious on that occasion; he finished a narrowly beaten second; most recently in the Grade 1 Northern Dancer, he had an eventful journey; he appeared to try and jump the inside rail midway up the incline heading to the first turn; he then settled nicely with a two length advantage until challenged from either side deep in the stretch; he was beaten just a long length while being checked sharply deep in the stretch when the winner Sheikhzayedroad came out in his vicinity while Dynamic Sky passed him for the runner up spot late; Stein was aboard for his big work October 5th in 59.1 going easily; he has since had a freshening work in 1.00. DENIM BAY came off the shelf September 14th and it was obvious that he would need that race; he also performed below his usual standard when on turf last time; last year, he returned from a poor performance on turf to wake up and win a Poly track race. HARDCASTLE was just getting back in the game after such a long time away August 24th and went surprisingly well; he had a letdown in his second start following the layoff then blossomed in his most recent try; he switched to turf and he was narrowly beaten and was full of fight throughout; he now comes back to Poly track, a footing over which he won earlier in his career. BREW ON THE BEACH has dedicated himself to route racing in five consecutive events and did have a runner up finish three starts ago; he will now shorten to six and a half furlongs; he worked recently in 49.1. ULTIMATE BLUE took significant support last time even though he was in against an even money favourite who finished behind him in second; he was held back immediately and then was dispatched at the top of the stretch and he fled away from that field winning by eight lengths in by far the best race of his career; Boulanger is sticking with him with this jump in value. PROROGUING broke off balance and came in at the start October 4th; he closed eagerly to be fourth beaten three lengths in this category with blinkers added; he stretches out a furlong and a half and Husbands has been hired. ETHANOL has questionable status; this will be his first start of the season at this belated date; he was quite good in three of his four starts during his opening campaign; he reports some quick recent works for Pat Parente including a move October 12th in 59.3 getting ready to come off the shelf; Da Silva has been selected for this ride. HYDEMYDUDE was called to win last time; it was projected he would carry his speed better; the fourth quarter was run in 27.1 seconds; he won by four and a half lengths. LOCKOUT ran boldly at six furlongs in the Grade 2 Highlander when advancing late from seventh to be third; in the seven furlongs Play The King, he waited early and rushed outside in the stretch to be second behind his stable mate, Kaigun, in a peak performance; when he stretched out for the Woodbine Mile, a slow early pace developed on the soggy turf and he did not have the same intense kick at the longer distance; he shortens back to just six furlongs here and comes in for John C. Oxley for Mark Casse; he worked October 9th in 1.00 with Boulanger aboard and he was moving well. LANGSTAFF is seeking his initial win of the campaign; he rushed in the Kenora to be third against Black Hornet; most recently in the restricted Overskate, he closed but too late; he comes in for Ace Racing Stable Inc. and ATA Stables Inc. for Scott Fairlie. Kaster, goes for Ian Black and has had many good runs; he won the Connaught Stakes at seven furlongs in May catching up with the difficult Something Extra who was second recently in the Kentucky Turf Dash; in the King Edward, he was beaten just a half length by Grand Arch who was second most recently in the Grade 1 Shadwell Mile; in his latest in the Play The King, he showed tremendous turn speed; he took over the lead but faltered late; the third place finisher has since won the Kentucky Turf Dash; he trained sharply with Wilson aboard October 8th in 1.00.3 and had a good spin on the E. JIM BANNON’S JOURNAL OCTOBER 19/2014 CASPAR NETSCHER is a runner of some note who has three times won at the Group 2 level; however his last significant victory came in Germany in 2012; he has been lightly raced in his past two campaigns and has often appeared in races at the highest level; just two starts ago in the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock, he was beaten just five and a half lengths and the runner up in the race, Gordon Lord Byron, was an established Group 1 winner; most recently in the Group 3 John Guest Bengough at Ascot on soft ground, he was gallant to make the pace in the middle stages but he lost late when challenged by an undefeated winner; he was finally fifth; he goes for trainer David Simcock who recently ventured here to win the Woodbine Mile with Trade Storm and the Northern Dancer with Sheikhzayedroad; Andrew Mullen rides for the initial time. BLACK HORNET a three time stakes winner locally, scored most recently in the Kenora in late August in a restricted event; last time in the Bold Venture Stakes against open company, he used new tactics and sat off the early pace then made his move in the middle stages but could not secure the advantage and was finally third against a rallying Calgary Cat while the front runner, Bear No Joke was in the runner up spot; he will be trying turf for the initial time for Pat Parente; he has been prepping thoroughly well this month; in his work October 12th in 58.3, he galloped out vigorously. DREAMSGONEWILD is a seven time winner and all victories have come on grass; he made it three wins in a row September 27th in the Laurel Dash; he attended the pace from the outside and was put to pressure in mid stretch and finally displaced the front runner while keeping the highly regarded Ben’s Cat, a seventeen turf winner, in behind him in third; he comes in for trainer Bruce F. Alexander; Trevor McCarthy rides. CALGARY CAT won the Bold Venture Stakes after starting eleventh and then racing eighth on the backstretch; he was sent up the inside and found room and then came to the outside of the pace maker, Bear No Joke and quickened away leaving Black Hornet in third; on turf two starts ago, he had a significant winning rally at six and a half furlongs to beat San Nicola Thunder, who recently accounted for the Bunty Lawless; his appreciation for the lawn has been obvious; he goes for Kevin Attard here and had a significant work October 5th in 48 getting ready and has since been on the training track for a half mile trial. YOUCAN’TCATCHME a three time stakes winner, had the tough task of being in a losing pace fight last time with Leigh Court and that one won easily and has since won big at Keeneland in the Thoroughbred Club Of America Stakes; she has been freshened and has trained easily coming to this event. DISCO BARBIE had poor rough racing luck in the Grade 2 Masters Stakes at Presque Isle September 8th; she gambled on getting through on the inside but a wall of rivals stacked up in front of her at the quarter pole; only late did she find rallying room and then she finished second; the winner, Living The Life who won the Filly & Mare Champion Stakes at Lingfield before transferring to North America, has been perfect since arriving; she has had a couple of local works here for Dale Capuano. ANGEL TERRACE competed most recently at Kentucky Downs in the faster split of the Ladies Marathon; she had first run at the leader in the stretch and relegated that one to second spot with a quick move deep in the lane; she is a homebred for Augustin Stable coming in for Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard. JUST THE JUDGE raced competently June 29th at the Curragh at ten furlongs at the Group 1 level under 136 lbs. for Charles Hills when finishing a sharp closing third against the favourite, Thistle Bird; her momentum was significant and she was soon going to be second; most recently, she came for the Grade 1 Beverly D where she was between runners through the stretch and she closed to the inside of the runner up, Stephanie’s Kitten and missed the place prize by a neck; that rival subsequently went on to win the Grade 1 Flower Bowl; she comes in for Qatar Racing Limited and Sangster Farm with Jamie Spencer aboard once again. ODELIZ is a four year old Irish bred filly who has gone without a victory in seven attempts this season, yet, five times has been in the money; earlier in her campaign, she was second behind the outstanding Thistle Bird and she kept Just The Judge in behind her; most recently, she was at Gowran Park in Ireland where she finished third to the heavy favourite from the Dermot Weld barn; she was traveling nine furlongs on that occasion; a switch today for trainer Karl Burke is to have Ryan Moore climb aboard for this ten furlong test; she likes some give to the ground. ROYAL FURY is a five year old mare for Amerman Racing going for Brian Lynch; she has added value being a half sister to Coffee Clique, a Grade 1 winner this season; she competed in the Canadian Stakes September 14th and chased home the dominant winner, Deceptive Vision with a rush in the stretch and she galloped out strongly and does get extra room today; she is seeking her first victory on turf this season but is a two time winner on the lawn in her career; she worked superbly October 9th in 1.12.4 getting ready. DECEPTIVE VISION a homebred for Sam-Son Farm, missed by inches to her stable mate, Overheard in the Dance Smartly Stakes; most recently, she won at the Grade 2 level in the Canadian Stakes at nine furlongs; freshness was a major asset; she got first run at the lead and was asked for her best for only an eighth of a mile and that was good enough; she has been further freshened; she has been quite active with morning gallops on the E. P. Taylor turf this week for Malcolm Pierce; once again, Da Silva has the mount. WALL OF SOUND comes in for Chasemore Farm and trainer Tom Dascombe and she is the traveling companion of Brown Panther, who contested the Canadian International; most recently, she competed at Yarmouth where she finished third beaten a short length when unable to hold the advantage at a mile and a quarter; she adds lasix for this event. MERI SHIKA competes for Stella Perdomo and goes for Hall of Fame conditioner, Roger Attfield; she won the Flaming Page at a mile and a half in August with plenty of stamina; most recently, she didn’t have enough middle pace in the Canadian Stakes against Deceptive Vision over giving ground and she was finally fourth when Royal Fury was more thorough in second; she gets added ground here; she trained quite well with Wilson aboard October 12th on turf in 1.16.4 with a rallying move to beat company. RACE #11 BANNON 7 SYNERGIST 10 TRUE ATTRACTION 6 HOLLYWOOD HALLIE 4 MIRACLEONTHIRTIETH GOLDEN ATHENA raced well at five furlongs October 3rd with late power to advance from seventh to third; she rarely ventures out this far at six and a half furlongs. OMNIVELLY was a winner when taken to Fort Erie in July for Colebrook Farms but a couple of return trips there produced poor results; she now drops for $12,500 looking for the wake up on Poly track. CARAMEL CRUNCH was in a spot last time where an early speed conflict developed and that set it up nicely for her looping off the pace move; she took her maiden score in her fourteenth appearance. MIRACLEONTHIRTIETH had speed inside last time but was finally out of the money on turf; three starts ago when she was last on Poly track, she ran quite willingly in fourth against a key winner and that race gives her standing with today’s drop on the quick comeback. THIS IS THE WAY was well handled by Garcia to win September 26th for Bruno Schickedanz; she was in behind rivals on the turn waiting and then came to the inside of the leader in the stretch and won it late. HOLLYWOOD HALLIE closed willingly at six furlongs two starts ago and missed narrowly against a sharp speed winner; most recently, she stretched to seven furlongs where she was again moving forward and gaining positions; she tries an intermediate distance and fits. SYNERGIST plunges in value here; two starts ago on Poly track against Ontario sire company in the non winners of two category, she was eighth beaten a length and a half; the runner two spots behind her, I’m Just Sayin, came back to win; in her latest, she went to turf and was beaten only five lengths against a key group. YOSHI MORI has been around the edges the past while; she was seventh in her latest but not far behind when Hollywood Hallie was better in fourth. GAGA LADY was a winner at Fort Erie two starts ago for $5,000 then was doubled in value to run on turf there last time and was unable to contend. TRUE ATTRACTION is another one to consider because of the big plunge today; on Poly track last time at six furlongs for $19,000 against non winners of two, she was sharp to be second best with a nice stretch close; she fits. BACHELORETTE had no real chance last time at Fort Erie because the Biamonte stable had shipped in the big favourite who won by twelve and a half lengths and she reported second to that one. MARIANNA was not a factor at Fort Erie last time and was unable to keep up here two starts ago. LEFT UPPERCUT won big at Presque Isle for $7,500 last time for Dorothy Gentner who frequently ships in here; she now tries non winners of two; Wong gets the call. SPEEDY DIABLO had a solid runner up finish but at just five furlongs last outing; she must stretch to six and a half furlongs here. SISTERDINI has had many good in the money finishes here in the past but dedicated herself to racing at Fort Erie this summer; she won a race there in July; she hit the low point of her form there most recently.
