Tom Smith Simple, Sensuous, Passionate John Milton in his essay “On Education” used these three adjectives to define what a poem should be. We will consider what he meant by each with special attention to “sensuous.” I will read some poems of mine to illustrate my interpretation. We will perform one or more exercises to enhance our understanding; also to have some fun and encourage “flights of fancy.” Professor Emeritus of Castleton State College where he taught from 1964 to 1995, Tom Smith received his undergraduate degree in English and Speech from SUNY-Albany in 1956, his graduate degrees in Literature from Rutgers-New Brunswick. Smith’s poems have been published in such magazines as Virginia Quarterly, American Scholar, and New York Quarterly. He has published one novel, A Well-Behaved Little Boy, as well as eleven volumes of poetry. His long story “The Christmas Shopper” won the 2009 A.E. Coppard Prize for Fiction. Also a local actor, Smith is married to soprano and actress Virginia DeAngelis Smith. Joanna Tebbs Young Getting to the Truth Whether you are writing a novel, a screen-play, an article, or a memoir, getting to your own truth in order to resonate with your audience is an essential first step. I will discuss the benefits of expressive writing as a way to access personal and universal truths, as well as a tool for inspiring creativity and getting over Page Fright. Exercises will introduce some basic techniques for deep, meaningful writing. Joanna Tebbs Young is a weekly columnist for the Rutland Reader and Rutland Herald, and next year will be have an article published in the Rutland Magazine. She holds a BA-Hon from Castleton State College, a MA from Goddard College in Transformative Language Arts, and is certified through the Center for Journal Therapy. She holds expressive writing workshops in Rutland at Allen House Coaching Collaborative and Writers’ Room which she co-owns with her husband, Brad Young, a Hypnotherapist and EMDR practitioner. Her memoir is out and about pursuing a publisher. Burnham Holmes Getting Unstuck and On Track “When I was younger, I went to hear Tennessee Williams speak at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. I wanted to hear, like I imagine did most people there, what this distinguished man of the theatre had to say, this playwright who had penned such immortal classics as The Streetcar Named Desire. Perhaps we would be treated not only to insights into playwrighting but also the American theatre. But no, that was not what was in store….” Writers, whether beginning or advanced, need a writing practice. This session will explore the necessity and benefits of regular writing and ways to establish and develop your own practice. Burnham Holmes has held staff and freelance positions at several New York publishers, has written seventeen books on a wide variety of subjects, and teaches writing and speech at Castleton State College.
