OUR NEW ORLEANS ARCHDIOCESE
FAMILY PRAYER
Loving and Faithful God, through the years
the people of our archdiocese have appreciated
the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor
in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness.
We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother,
and ask you to help us in the battle of today
against violence, murder and racism.
We implore you to give us your wisdom
that we may build a community
founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect
to the life and dignity of all people.
Bless parents
that they may form their children in faith.
Bless and protect our youth
that they may be peacemakers of our time.
Give consolation to those
who have lost loved ones through violence.
Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance
to be a voice for life and human dignity
in our community.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us.
Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us
that we may be a holy family.

WEEKLY REFLECTION
29th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today’s Gospel finds us moving with Jesus into
Jerusalem, the place where he will complete his mission.
Once again, we find him teaching in the Temple, where
he is confronted by the chief priests and elders of the
people. Their question is straightforward: “By whose
authority do you do what you do?” The question itself is
legitimate. Those asking it are responsible in many ways
for the welfare of the people and for the religious tradition/s by which they have maintained their identity as a
nation and as the Chosen People. After all, Jesus has
made some powerful claims during his ministry, not only
about who he is but also about the true meaning of salvation. His actions and words have been “unsettling.”
But if on the surface the question is appropriate, the
ensuing dialogue makes clear that Jesus’ audience is not
composed of sincere seekers or even sincere guardians of
religious truth. The follow-up question about whether it
is lawful to pay taxes to civil authorities may be presented in a way that is courteous and even flattering, but it is
obvious that it is insincere, designed to hurt Jesus whichever way he answers. If he says that taxes should be
paid, he becomes an accomplice of the national enemy,
the Roman occupiers, and thus a traitor to his own people. If he answers that taxes should not be paid, he will
be denounced to the Roman authorities as a rebel.
Jesus hears the question, but he does not walk into
the trap. Nor does he, I think, answer the question. He
says nothing about paying or not paying taxes; nothing
of the rights and wrongs of foreign occupation or obedience to its laws. What I believe he does seem to say is,
“Judge for yourselves; do what is right; but never forget
that over and above any human authority stands God.”
Jesus’ answer is not only a brilliant escape from a
trap. It asserts, as much for us today as for the people of
his own time, the need to consider from a believer’s
point of view how the use of political power relates to
the ultimate authority of God in creation and in history.
God should not be a stranger, with no interests to protect,
when we consider the economic and political issues before us. And so we might ask: In the upcoming elections, will our religious convictions, our identity as a
people of faith, influence our voting? How? Why?
TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

prayer during which we reflect on the mysteries of our
faith while entrusting our petitions to God through the
intercession of Mary. At Immaculate Conception,
there are three opportunities each week to pray the
Rosary with others: Fridays after Noon Mass and Stations; Sundays at 9:00 a.m.; and, Sundays at 7:00 p.m.
as part of evening Adoration and Benediction.
