April 12, 2015 OUR NEW ORLEANS ARCHDIOCESE FAMILY PRAYER Loving and Faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Often called Doubting Thomas but perhaps could be called the first lapsed Catholic. He leaves for a time and then refuses to believe the testimony of the other apostles as to the Resurrection of Jesus. We can see this pattern in various centuries when those who grow slack in the practice of the faith then naturally begin to doubt the truth of what has been revealed by Jesus through the Church. What lessons can we learn from this first lapsed Catholic? The first lesson is that it is only by cleaving to the Church can we fully experience Christ. Christ calls each by name personally, but calls us into His Body, the Church. Thus when we go off by ourselves, away from the body, we don’t experience a more personal and genuine Jesus but rather we experience our own distancing of ourselves from our Savior’s call. Thus the best way to fully experience Jesus personally is by sharing that experience in the midst of the believing community. The second lesson is the paradox that to fully experience Easter joy we must contemplate the wounds of Christ. Jesus does not appear to Thomas and the other disciples as some vague spirit but as the whole person he is: flesh and blood, body and soul, with his wounds clearly visible. This may seem to us counterintuitive: shouldn’t the resurrection erase all his wounds? But what Jesus is showing his apostles is that the resurrection he promises is not some sentimental hope. It is grounded in the harsh reality of sin and death. But in his wounds we see that sin and death do not have the last word but rather the transformative power of Christ’s mercy will have the last word. The last lesson we can draw is the importance of attendance at the Sunday Eucharist. Many are sometimes surprised and unnerved when they find out that the Church teaches that it is a mortal sin to skip Sunday Mass except for some serious obstacle. But our gospel today shows us the truth of this teaching. The Eucharist gathers us together to listen to Jesus speaking to us in scripture and revealing his presence in his Body and Blood. Thus every Sunday Eucharist is a Resurrection appearance given to us by Christ under sacramental signs. Just like Thomas, staying away from the community means missing Jesus’ call to us personally. CELEBRATION OF CONFIRMATION On Tuesday evening, April 14, at 7 p.m., Archbishop Gregory Aymond will confirm this year’s confirmation candidates. All are welcome to this important event in the life of the 39 high school students who participated in our parish’s preparation program during the Sundays of Lent. CHURCH TOURS A 30-minute docent-led tour of our church takes place every Saturday afternoon beginning at 3:15 p.m. Also, with advance notice, tours can be arranged for visiting groups at other times by contacting the parish office. ARCHDIOCESAN MASS FOR VOCATIONS Sunday, April 26 (the 4th Sunday of Easter, Good Shepherd Sunday) is this year’s World Day of Prayer for Vocations. As the Church invites us to honor the vocation of all Christians given in baptism, let us pray that those who are discerning their life vocation — whether it be to marriage, the single life, priesthood, diaconate, or consecrated life — may listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd to guide them. To mark World Vocation Day, the Archdiocese of New Orleans will celebrate its annual Mass for Vocations at 11 a.m. at the St. Louis Cathedral. Archbishop Aymond will preside. Those who gather will be invited to pray for those who serve the Archdiocese as priests, sisters, brothers and deacons. PLEASE CONSIDER … … serving our parish as a lector, extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, altar server, or usher / hospitality minister. Additional lectors are particularly needed for the Sunday morning Masses, and additional extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are very much needed for the 7:30 p.m. Sunday Mass, although there are opportunities to serve at all the Masses. To serve as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, the Archdiocese requires participation in a training workshop. The next two are scheduled for Saturday, May 9 (at Our Lady of the Rosary) and on Saturday, May 16 (at Visitation of Our Lady). Each runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. If interested in any of these ministries, please contact Fr. Reale or Fr. Tesvich soon. ANNULMENT WRITING WORKSHOP Periodically the Archdiocese offers a writing workshop for persons seeking an annulment in the Catholic Church or for persons responding to an annulment. The next workshop will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Belle Chasse. The workshop series takes place on five Tuesdays, beginning May 12 and continuing through June 9, with each session running from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. There is a $25 fee for materials. For more information, you may contact Fr. Reale in the parish office (529-1477, ext. 243) or Cathy Francis at the Archdiocesan Office of the Family Life Apostolate (861-6243). BAPTISMS Baptism at Immaculate Conception is usually celebrated at noon on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month, although other arrangements are possible.
