Newsletter Friday 17 October 2014 What you missed this week: Lunch meeting: Speaker Tracy Puklowski is Associate Director of the Museum of Living Cultures at Te Papa and talked about the diversity of exhibitions arising, in part at least, from the necessity for the museum to span a very wide range of objects and cultures. Currently, many exhibitions reflect the anniversary of the commencement of World War One. This focus will peak at the opening of the Gallipoli exhibition on 25th April next year. Tracy’s presentation was a reminder of how much exhibitions have changed. The Gallipoli exhibit is to combine Te Papa skills with those of Weta Workshop together with the input of military historian, Chris Pugsley. Tracy also covered the current Tyrannosaurus Exhibition, the Air New Zealand/NAC exhibition celebrating the 75th anniversary plus the current art exhibitions. I realised as a local that I am most likely to go to Te Papa with visitors from outside the city and just view the more touristy stuff. It was a reminder to get along there on a regular basis. There are other ways to interact with Te Papa as well. Visitors to the Te Papa website now outstrip visitors going along physically. They have a blog, Te Papa Blog Eureka was a great success The Club can certainly bask in reflected glory. Feedback from competitors, the sponsors and everyone else has been extremely positive. This time I realised that the different aspects of the event adds to the wonderful buzz and its success. There is a low key pre-contest dinner, good use of the contest morning to prepare the contestants, the contest itself and then the Government House dinner. You can see the winners on the Eureka website and while there you will find it very worthwhile to take the time to listen to Kim Hill's Saturday Morning interview of Sam HallMcMaster, the winner of the Premier Award on the Eureka website. Sergeants' session Elizabeth Tennet made great use of her role as CE of the Community Law Centre to quiz and surprise us about the work of the Centre. Collective Impact: Tony Hassed updated us on how this group is progressing. We need to foster the members because they are the future of Rotary. If you want to connect with the group, just give Tony a call. One good way of connecting is to attend their monthly social gathering, 6 - 7pm on the last Tuesday of the month. Other RCW stuff: Congratulations to Kerry Prendergast, who won the Local and Regional Category in the Westpac Women of Influence Awards. Kerry’s award was for her influence on Wellington and its region for 24 years as Councillor, Deputy Mayor and Mayor. Do you park at the James Cook Hotel during Rotary lunches? Please contact William Sommerville to let him know as William is negotiating the parking discount. Research is a joint process. Some of our members have very quick brains. Peter Lawson and Tony Hassed put two and two together and last Monday’s DomPost had an article about a vaccine against asthma that was developed from serendipitous failure of an hypothesis. The researcher mentioned is Franca Ronchese, but Peter and Tony realised that our RCW 2012 scholarship recipient, Naomi Baker, is part of that research group. Mind you, it took Rebecca to remember the name of the recipient! Naomi’s PhD research has shown that specialised immune cells can dampen down the runaway airway immune responses in an acute model of asthma. Skilled Migrants Graduation Ceremony. There was a great turnout of Club members to this ceremony on Monday evening. The excitement of the graduates reminds us what an important stage this is for them in their journey towards settling into New Zealand. Long standing members may have noticed the death notice for Hope Fraser, wife of Bill Fraser, who was President of the club in 1992-93. Don’t miss the lunch meeting next week: Alex Hannant, CE of the Akina Foundation, will speak on ‘Business for social good - a new generation of social enterprise’. The Akina Foundation aims to grow the emerging New Zealand social enterprise sector and it has a range of innovative ways of going about this. Their mission is very close to one of our strategic goals. Alex Hannant was originally a manager who has worked in Africa, Asia and Europe. In recent years he has worked in crosssector engagement in fields such as the technical aspects of climate change, development and leadership. Other RCW events coming up: Melbourne Cup on Tuesday 4th November at the Museum Hotel. This is always great fun and somehow marks the beginning of the Silly Season. Do put it in your diary. People have a few glasses of wine, William usually runs a sweep, we watch the race and generally relax. You can dress up if you like. Most don’t, but don’t let that put you off. th Manfeild Park races MG Classic Race Meeting. 16 November, 9.30 – 4.00pm. You will have read a bit about the massive downturn in the fortunes of Detroit. The Rotary District has a programme called Launch Detroit, providing small loans, free business education, mentoring and networking to help people set up their own businesses. Levi Johnson’s 'My-T-Fine Sauce' is an intriguing example. Levi was made redundant and could only get a job with very low pay and short hours. He decided to use his spare time to commercialise his hobby of making southern barbecue sauce. He got into Launch Detroit and Rotary has helped him develop and market his product for wider and higher end distribution.
