Meyer Nancy Meyer is the 2011 Mother of the Year for Iowa. Nancy and her husband, Ronald, have 2 daughters: Rhonda Meyer, Davenport, and Roxanne Paper, Durant, and two grandchildren: Ashtyn and Logan Paper. Nancy is retired from the North Scott Schools-having worked 12 years as a special ed. teacher's aide. Nancy is an active member of Faith Lutheran Church, Special Olympic coach and chaperone, member of the Pork Producers and Farm Bureau. Other organizations include: past PTA president, 4-H leader, S.S. Teacher, poll watcher, Buddy Walk, Up With Families, and Cancer and Heart fund volunteer. Nancy was asked to put her name in for nomination, completed the necessary portfolio, was selected this past spring at the Iowa Mothers meeting in Ankeny to represent Iowa, and took part in the national convention of the AMI (American Mother's, Inc.) in Salt Lake City, Utah. She will share some of her experiences with the Rotary. The ideals of American Mothers, Inc.® began in the heart and mind of Anna Reeves Jarvis as she sought to heal the damage done to families caught in the conflict of the Civil War. By organizing a day of love and friendship across battle lines, this simple observance grew into the national holiday known as Mother's Day for which American Mothers is the official sponsor. American Mothers was officially organized in 1950 as a division of the Golden Rule Foundation and was incorporated under the laws of New York. It became an independent, non-profit organization in 1954. However, the first National Mother of the Year ® was presented by Honorary Chairman, Sarah Delano Roosevelt in 1935 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. Every year since then, American Mothers has named a remarkable mother from nominees among the 50 states, District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico for this important honor. Many outstanding individuals throughout America have served as officers, leaders, members and supporters of this organization such as Sarah Delano Roosevelt, J.C. Penny, Mamie Eisenhower, Phyllis Marriott and Hillary Rodham Clinton. American Mothers is an inter-faith, non-political, non-profit organization that continues to recognize the invaluable contribution mothers make to the future success and happiness of children and society. PDG Fred Luckenbill from the Rock Island Rotary Club asked several months ago, if the Friendship Exchange Team that would be visiting his club, could do the program at North Scott Rotary on September 23. Seems we are the only area club that meets on Friday and fit into their schedule. So, seven lovely people from the Midlands of England, representing three Rotary Clubs, shared information about their areas and clubs. For several of these people, it was there first time in the United States. The Holbeach club has only 27 members, which consists of 9 married couples and a few eligible bachelors. One of their projects is collecting used school books and sending them to needy children in Sir Laka. The Loughborough club is associated with an engineering college. They help recruit engineering students and sponsor them. The Soul Valley Club of Nottingham meets at an exquisite old hotel, with a very cool chapel. Near the holidays many members dress up as Santa(s) and participate in a run (parade of sorts), collecting coins in cans for the needy. It a very impressive site to see 1000 or more Guests, besides PDG Fred, were home hosts for the team including, Larry Tadlock and Mary Fislar from the Rock Island Club, John Finkes from Illinois Quad Cities Club, and Dave and Rita Pearson from the Moline Rotary Club. Also Branko Momcilovic’, from Belgrade, Serbia, a student and nephew of Julia Blazevic. Club items: John Maxwell needs volunteers for putting stickers in 240 dictionaries after the meeting and for handing them out on Monday. Kim Wilkins stills needs help at the Kite Festival on Saturday and Sunday. Jeremy Kaiser announced the date for the Harvest Party as October 12. Two shifts of children will come to the Pride of the Wapsi and many volunteers are needed. Jim Koehler made announcements in reference to the upcoming auction. More details about this available on a previous page. John Maxwell was the sergeant and collected $52 of which $40 was added to the education fund in honor of Dorothy’s birthday. Merle Anderson gave $110 to his Paul Harris account for his birthday and anniversary, and $23 was collected for birthday cake.
