Absentee Number: 9301 6270 17th October 2014 Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of Prendiville Welcome back after the recent school holidays. I hope families enjoyed the opportunity of a break, although for some, the break may now come given that students are back at school! This term we welcomed three new students and also Mrs Simpson to the Science department as a long service leave replacement for Term 4. We also welcome back Mrs Owen and Mr McCoy from long service leave. Work on our next building programme has commenced and the canteen is now ‘gutted’ in readiness for the transformation to a cafeteria. Sanpro were the successful company to tender for this building programme – they came in with the most competitive costing for the work and we look forward to having a new cafeteria at the start of next year and a new chapel, student services building and seminar facility completed in mid-2015. Our Year 12 students complete their Semester 2 examinations this week and those who have external WACE exams to sit in November, will return for classes next week. Their Eucharistic Celebration and Supper to celebrate their Graduation will occur on October 27. Please note that the next P&F meeting has been brought forward by one week to this Tuesday 28th October (7.30pm in the Board Room). This is to accommodate the Yr 7 2015 Parent Information Night on the following Tuesday. The efforts of all students involved resulted in another 5th place finish, comfortably out of the relegation zone. Unlike previous years, our relays proved to be very successful and the strong performances allowed us to edge ahead of All Saints College and lessen the gap to 4th placed Corpus Christi. This however does allow the PE staff to run a wide range of sporting activities throughout the week, both before and after school, that are open to all students at the College. Information regarding the Term 4 sporting opportunities can be viewed in the Downloads section of the College website or alternatively by contacting me directly. We are looking forward to seeing as many students as possible taking the opportunity to be involved in sport. Jamie Birrell Sports Co-ordinator THE NAMING RIGHTS In 2015, as part of the College’s canteen facelift, the students will dine in a state of the art alfresco café area. During Term 3 as part of the new look place to “nosh” we ran a competition to name the café space. Callan Williams was just one student of 27 who submitted a name and won the $100 voucher with his contribution: REEF BREAK Congratulations Callan on your creative idea. The name will be sent to our design sub-contractors who will talk with Callan then finally produce the new design in all its glory to be placed in the café area. It was extremely pleasing to have 720 staff and students respond to the survey to name the alfresco cafe area. Over 30% of the vote was captured by the name REEF BREAK, so Callan’s contribution was a comfortable winner. Other finalists include: TRENDI PRENDI (Madison Large), PRESCO (Kajol Sharma), CAFÉ REDMOND (Caitlin Wellstead), MEET & EAT and THE PRENDY (Jessica Armour). All these students received $20 vouchers to be used at the new café. Thanks again to all who contributed and to all who took the time to have their say. YEAR 11 DRAMA PRODUCTION As a part of their Semester 2 course work, the Year 11 Drama class has taken on the ambitious task of producing a full scale production of Matt Cameron's Ruby Moon. This modern, black comedy, combines the elements of twisted fairy tales and classic detective stories to lead you down a path of mystery and horror. Six year old Ruby Moon has gone missing and her parents are convinced the neighbours know more than they are letting on. Follow Ray and Sylvie as they take you through the streets of Flaming Tree Grove in the hope of understanding the insanity of their situation. The performance runs for one night only, Thursday 30th October at 7pm in the Prendiville Performing Arts Centre and entry is by gold coin donation. We look forward to seeing you there. Rebecca Rodwell Drama Teacher PRENDIVILLE TECHSPOT Welcome to our TechSpot. This section of our newsletter is for students and staff to share tips, tricks, ideas and apps to do with technology at Prendiville. This week, we have some strategies for using technology to prepare for exams and other important end-of-year tests. 1. Delete any files you don’t need (including games and non-school apps) during exam time. If you have a lot of Pages or keynote files, for example, it is a good idea to remove those that are not useful to you anymore. We don’t mean all the school files, but the more relevant the saved work, the better – and the less distracting! 2. Use the Timer and/or Reminders to set study sessions. Set yourself short but effective study sessions for 20-30 minutes. Give yourself a little break and a reward at the end of each one to help keep you motivated. Add motivational messages to your Reminders to help you stay on track! 3. Use mind mapping and useful revision tools. Popplet, Bubbl.us and MindMeister are all great for making mind maps that mean something. Connect your ideas together to get an overview of the main points, and use colour to help categorise them. You can also collaborate with others! Evernote Peek is another app that you can use to create bright, virtual flash cards. 4. Download resources from Coneqt. If your teacher has used Coneqt to share materials with you, you have a whole library of help sitting online. Go over the coursework and take fresh notes. This might also be the place to find old exam papers, too. 5. Take a break away from the screen. Try using other methods that don’t require your iPad in order to give your brain a break. This could involve quizzing a friend, drawing the main ideas on paper or making physical flashcards. If you need help with iPads or just want to ask a question, feel free to drop into the iPad Helpdesk in P1 at lunchtimes. We will be happy to provide assistance.
