No. 215 OCTOBER 2014 IN THIS ISSUE News • Coarse • Sea • Trout • Matches Bob Morris • Russ Evans Tom Dickinson 46lb 4oz catfish Main Lake Hawkhurst Fish Farm www.freshwaterinformer.com A very warm welcome to the October edition of Freshwater Informer. It has certainly been a very busy month here at the magazine with so much happening in the South East's fishing world. Events have certainly been helped with the wonderful weather we enjoyed. As mentioned last month, September can be a cracking month and it certainly turned out that way seeing lots of anglers and their families out fishing. I had a great day's fishing at Furnace Brook Fishery mid month and you can read all about my 'Big Day Out' within the magazine. This is the one of the brand new features for the Freshwater Informer and kicks off this month. If your fishery would like to be the venue for a future 'Big Day Out', then please get in touch with us here at the magazine. Last month's edition saw a Fishy Tale from Celia, which I hope you enjoyed reading. Please let us have your fishy tale so we can feature you in future issues. It could be the best or worst day's fishing or even something funny that happened to you or one of your mates. We can always change the name to avoid embarassment! A very worthwhile event takes place later this month at Cackle Hill Lakes near Biddenden. A week long fishing marathon is being held to raise funds for the Celia Blakey Centre at The William Harvey Hospital. Further details are to be found in the magazine and a mammoth prize draw by a celebrity angler takes place on the 26th. Check it out! Sea anglers throughout Kent and Sussex will be getting excited and dusting off their tackle along with booking scores of lugworm from their dealers, as the long awaited cod season kicks off. Early signs are promising with the numbers of codling showing throughout September. Talking about getting excited, Mrs Reed thought Christmas had come early recently when I handed her a warm winter coat from the charity shop. She asked if we were going out? I told her no, I was turning the heating off. Have you seen the price of gas these days?? Enjoy your fishing! Summer conditions on the rivers can often lead to frustration as duck weed can soon build up on stretches where overhanging tree branches dip into the water’s surface. There can be no worse feeling knowing a swim holds some decent chub or roach but because of the surface weed, preventing a cast to where the fish layup. However when the temperatures drop and the vegetation recedes unfishable pegs come back on the market and for this reason I will be fishing the River Eden in Kent and the Stour in Suffolk many times over the coming weeks and I just can’t wait. Unlike last season’s wet winter I am hoping as indeed I expect you are that the rain holds off and we actually get some proper frosts on the ground so that some good predator action can be had from say December to February. My predator action involves perch fishing and I look to be on the banks of Framfield again where last season conditions allowed for just one decent perch session, many plans were put on hold for the perch as the rain just kept coming and the water temperatures still saw the carp feeding on Spring lake which was no good for me. Great roach sport I managed a short morning session on the Eden a couple of weeks ago and although I had nothing big of note to shout about, it was a really enjoyable session catching the humble gudgeon, perch and roach plus of course stacks of chublets. A few hours down by the river banks always seems to boost my fishing fix as running a stick float through its paces is just about as good as it gets in my books. A few days before that I had a simply superb session on the Stour where I had one of the best day’s roach river fishing for many a year with 129 roach up to the 14oz mark. Double red maggot on a size 16’s hook fishing a 5BB stick in 10ft of water and a 15ft rod was 4 Freshwater Informer - October 2014 just pure magic in beautiful surroundings. Again I lost a big perch from the same swim that I lost a big perch previously and I noted it was virtually around the same time of the day as well when the perch struck so to speak so I am guessing that the stripeys patrol the swim I was fishing at the same times of the day, something I will put into practice on my next visit in October and the winter months. Next DVD in the pipeline I am looking forward to filming the 10th series of The Obsessed Angler series which will consist of some close fish action shots and some other interesting angles that should make for an interesting episode. “It’s the way I type em” Where does a fish keep his money? Fishery Reports Furnace Brook Fishery Hailsham, East Sussex This has been the driest September for many a year combined with some unseasonal high temperatures the main lake has really kicked into form and the fishing has been near it’s best for the visiting angler. Autumn is having its wonderful effect on the water with sumptuous red, auburn and rust colours bursting out from the bankside vegetation making life good just to be outside next to the water. What has been interesting to note is that the fish have been feeding well during the daytime where as normally their would be a lull in activity from midday to say midafternoon, this indicates they are feeder well on their run up to winter. Notable catches from August/September include; Kev from Bexhill making his first ever visit to the venue found the fish in an obliging mood. Fishing two rods during a day session he managed a fantastic nine Carp with two just under the magical 20lb mark, both fish were commons with the other seven all around 10lb in weight. He used peperoni and sticky bait dumbells presented on a size 10 hook combined with pellet filled pva bags. Promising to return for more of the same its safe to say he really enjoyed the day. Well done Kev top angling. Regular visitor Ed Randall has been up to his old tricks with great success. Ed likes to dig his own red worms and then uses them to great effect in his late afternoon/evening sessions. Fishing a light but balanced set-up Ed employs a method feeder and hair rigs his worms. By fishing this way he has had bumper hauls of Carp up to the 16lb mark along with quality Bream, Tench the odd Barbel and even eels of up to 3lb. He certainly has it sorted and it just goes to show that with a little imagination rich rewards are there for the taking. Keep it up Ed. Graham Bridger is just returning to his angling and on making his first visit to the venue he was horrified to realize that he had left his bait bucket at home with along with most of his bait! Rummaging around he was able to find a bag of ground bait and a tin of sweetcorn and made the best of it. Graham fished a traditional running cage feeder set-up half way out in open water and had a wonderful day. He caught Carp to double figures good Bream and quality Roach. He thoroughly enjoyed the experience so much so he has already been back twice! This time, fully loaded with his bait bucket. Good to see you back on the banks enjoying your sport Graham Young Frankie Watt had a wonder afternoon session with his Dad. Fishing close in Frankie fished the top two kit of his dad’s pole with maggot and sweetcorn hook baits catching Tench, Bream and his ‘favorite fish’ Rudd. I think the smile and joy on his face says it all really and it just goes to show that it’s not all about big fish with the youngsters. A big well done Frankie! It was great to have new Freshwater Informer main man BARRY REED visit the venue recently. Barry was here to shoot a feature for his ‘Barry’s Big Day Out’ series that we are sure will be a very popular regular slot in the Informer. Fishing with venue consultant Jonathan Watt the boys had a very busy day catching plenty of fish. Barry opted to fish the cage feeder two thirds across with his red ground bait mix and a selection of hook baits whilst Jonny cast a method feeder over to the far bank features. Barry found plenty of Bream and quality Roach along with the odd large Carp well into double figures that gate crashed proceedings. Jonathan had more Carp into double figures as to be expected against the far bank cover but not so expected was a wonderful, beautifully marked Roach. He was particularly satisfied as this was his first roach from the venue that has hit the magical 2lb barrier. Packing up at dusk the boys really had enjoyed the day with Barry vowing to return. Derek Brewer from Bexhill fished on one rod and had a field day catching 6 Tench weighting between 2lb and 4lb along with15 Bream with the average size 3lb he used bread paste with a size 10 hook over groundbait. Stuart Roberts from Heathfield fished a busy 24hr session where he caught 11 Common carp weighing 4lb - 16lb, one Mirror carp of 9lb,Roach to 2lb plus along with Bream averaging 3lb. All these fish fell to hemp, Strawberry corn, boilie and groundbait. Fantastic sport, Stuart. This venue just keeps on producing the goods, in gloriously peaceful surroundings its ‘old school fishing’ at its very best. Our matches are going really well with some of the best weights ever seen. HOUSE LAKE saw Bryann Collins catch 21 fish in 36 hours with only 4 being under 10lb and included 2 different 20lbers. Bryann fished the bank opposite bank to the snack bar and was using Alchemy Baits Nexus Dark Pagan boilies. Hamish Vanns and his brother Elliot had a great time on House whilst staying in our accommodation. They had plenty of fish from the top end of the lake, all caught over a bed of particles. Kevin Henham had a great session that was topped off with a cracking 14lb 7oz common. Michael Medley caught an 18lber from the top end of the lake and the Lawler boys beat their Dad Roy with a couple of stunners. MIDDLE LAKE continues to be the most productive lake on the complex for whatever fish you are after. We have cleared a lot of the reeds from the top end of the lake and this area is proving to be very productive. Fishing on the top with bread or mixers has produced the most large carp, although feeder fishing or boilies down the edge works wonders. Mr Richardson hooked in to a stunning 19lber and continued to catch consistently throughout the day. KELL is fishing well and has done throughout most of the year to be honest. After a lot of hard work and patience, Alfie Stait landed his first Kell carp of 15lb 5oz on Nash Crab and Krill. Earlier in the month Alex Smith tempted a stalked 23lb common with sweetcorn and Craig Adams had a 20lb 8oz fish. David Harland continued his Kell campaign with a 13lb 8oz Mirror and a 25lb Common and Graham Kent reached his 150th double figured fish from Wylands since November with Orange spot, coming in at 25lb. His son Jed caught at 22lb common on Nash Baits and Jordan Parish had a great few hours, landing both a 19lb 9oz and a 20lb 7oz common. Banking 24 fish, they included carp of 17lb 1oz, 18lb 3oz, 18lb 13oz, 19lb 3oz and he topped it off with a Graham Kent - Orange spot 25lb - Kell - his 150th double at Wylands 20lber. Rich used tangerine boilies fished to the point of the island and by the inlet in his 36 hour session. Matt Lee had a short afternoon session and landed 2 fish of 16lb 10oz and 17lb 12oz and Cameron Johnson bagged a 10lb 5oz common on his first ever trip fishing. Top baits include Nash Tandoori Spice, Tangerine Dream, Monster Crab and Mainline Hybrid. MAISIES is fishing really well. There have been plenty of cats coming out between the 20 and 30lbmark. James Baker had a stonking 47lb moggy. Fishing with double halibut pellet he managed to tempt the beast on his first session on Maisies. We have had another 47lber caught but the gentleman will remain nameless as he was suppose to be at work! Dennis Hastings had 3 cats during the day. Fishing from the 3rd swim, he cast to the corner of the lake with 2 halibut pellets for his first ever catfish trip. Pete Lee had a great session including a couple of mid 20’s and some stunning carp. Dont forget that Pete is currently in the lead for the biggest fish of the year competition. All you have to do to win a free season ticket is catch a bigger cat than 52lb before the 1st October and if it’s the biggest fish of the year you win. Get your skates on as there’s only a month to go! FIELD LAKE continues to provide some fantastic sport for all. Pete and his son Barney are regular visitors to the lake and enjoy some fantastic sport off the top with bread. Barney normally ends up beating his Dad! Sara Henham had her best ever fishing trip and caught 30 fish in a day. Best methods include floating bread at the top end of the lake or sweetcorn/luncheon meat near the dam wall. DAUGHTERS LAKE - has fished okay this month with a lot of mid to upper doubles being caught, the big girls seem to be keeping of the radar whether or not this is down to the colder night creeping in or not who knows, but with the window of fruity flavours and pop-ups approaching Daughters is one to get on the banks for as were pretty sure the autumn feed up is near Liam Highland had a field day landing 14 carp in his session the biggest of a 21lb 8oz common 19lb grass carp showing that on its day this lake can really produce. EDEN POND - as usual, the tench are stealing the show on Eden Pond with weights going to just over 5lb and the golden tench are coming along nicely with them being banked to 2lb. we’ve had a few more silvers gracing the banks this month. The perch are also feeding very well too.. There have also been a few carp to low doubles being banked so Eden is certainly living up to its name. JUNIORS LAKE - we have landscaped Juniors Lake this month and removed a lot of marginal growth which enables anglers to fish all around the lake now which in turn has enabled anglers to get to spots not fished before and that is showing in the catch rate as there have been plenty of fish caught since the work has been done. Dan Sweeney took advantage with a 10lb ghost mirror, regular Terry bank silvers and carp to 17lb there have been Carp to mid doubles and some lovely tench as well as good bream being caught. BIGGIN HILL ANGLING CENTRE Ian Abrahams 29lb 8oz Lake8 John Lawrie Lake 7 With the weather still remaining sunny and warm, good catches and weights are continuing, rewarding anglers able to fish on the surface with dog biscuit and bread crust during the brighter parts of the day, and switching to bottom baits overnight when the temperature drops. SPECIMEN LAKES - Lake 8 is still fishing well, particularly late evening and early morning. Ian Abraham took his 29lb 8oz Mirror from the toilet bank and Ron Harvey banked his 31 pound 8oz Mirror off the road side using the new custom rolled bait that Sandra from Crowborough Tackle has had made up specifically for the conditions and waters here at Frant. Other baits being used are varied and nothing stands out as particularly attractive to the bigger fish. The thing that comes from all the anglers is that persevering with a bait that's not bringing them in is probably not the way to go. Trying something new until you get some knocks has proved the most productive. Maple 8 and Grange have seen good weights in certain parts of the lake. John Lawrie took his 29lb 8oz from Lake 7 using hand rolled krill and plumb boilies MAIN LAKES - Mark Dalzell stood back and watched Ty catch a nice 18lb 4oz Common from lake 4, one of the Car Park lakes using Mainline Cell and it's been good to see some of our younger anglers bringing in some good catches. With the nights now drawing in we're seeing our Perch men returning to fish for these beautiful predators. 2lb and 3lb are catchable from Lakes 1 and 6 with lake 8 providing specimen quality examples ove 5lb. Tel: 01892 838576 Freshwater Informer - October 2014 15 Medway Man Bob Morris It is often said that ‘size matters’ or that ‘big is beautiful’ and I must admit that I have, at various points during my angling career, fallen into the trap of looking at my catches in this way. I seem to have broken this habit over the last few years however, and now gain more satisfaction from just feeling that I am doing well on a selected lake or stretch of river. A while ago in this column, I said that I was going to re-visit my local river Darent and check up on its current potential. This small stream has suffered greatly over the last few decades from low levels - mainly caused by excessive water extraction in the valley, combined with periods of drought and dry summers. This eventually led to parts of the river drying up completely, with disastrous consequences for both the fish stocks and wildlife. As this stream was one of my favourite haunts as a youngster, it has been great to see the average flow increase over recent years and fish populations start to increase. It was not until last week that I actually got around to taking a 7ft light-action rod and a reel loaded with 6lb line, for a short walk along the river bank one sunny y afternoon. Just to remind me of past times and also in order to check out the bottom end of the food chain, I also took along an old minnow trap, constructed from a wine bottle with the ‘funnel’ end knocked out. This was a tactic that I had used on many an occasion as a boy, in order to catch bait for my perch-fishing sessions on the nearby The tiny river Darent Bob's Darent set-up lakes. Perch were so numerous back in those days that it was necessary to go prepared with at least a couple of dozen minnows in order to give you a chance of wading through the huge shoals of smaller perch. We used to bait the bottle-trap with bread normally, but on this occasion I just stuffed a handful of groundbait in from my feeder bucket. Having spent some time locating a likely looking spot along the extremely overgrown (just how I like it) river path, I lowered the trap into about two feet of fast flowing water beneath some protruding tree roots. I did not have to wait long as the minnows appeared from nowhere and engulfed the bottle! Pitch invader 16 Freshwater Informer - October 2014 While I was waiting I set up a small running leger, with a size 18 barbless hook and baited it with a small piece of meat. After casting over into slightly deeper water in mid river it soon became obvious that the little fish were going to make this a pointless exercise, with the tip giggling around ‘ fit to bust as the minnows removed the bait sometimes actually getting hooked and landed. I had a small box of worms with me and was delighted to discover on the very first cast, that this tactic was still a great way to ‘up’ your species to the rank of Gudgeon, it must be many years since I last set eyes on one of these and I got quite a thrill at the old familiar feel of a fat little whisker wobbling on the end of my line. Having landed a few of these I decided Bob's old bottle trap Meanwhile in other news, as they say, I had been experiencing a few blanks sessions on the feederfishing front, with the bigger bream refusing to play ball. I decided that I would try using maggots on the second rod during my last trip and this was quite entertaining, as I soon started pulling in quantities of roach, skimmers and small perch. The sight of the perch made me consider that there might be a few bigger ones around, although I had no evidence for this. I had with me the remnants of the box of worms from the Darent trip and although I scaled up to a size 8 and slightly heavier line, it was, as often is the case, the small (2oz) ‘stripeys’ that were still up for the challenge. With only one worm left at about 5pm a good old traditional lift bite had me attached to what I initially thought was the’ sergeant ‘. Alas, it was not to be however, as a few minutes later I discovered that my pitch had been invaded by a 6lb tench. This is ironic really, as my last two tench sessions have been blank. Is it really October already? I must start getting the old pike gear out again, I am really looking forward to it. Best Fishes & Sizes Bob Morris Baited & ready to go it was time to bring in the trap and to my amazement, I found that there were so many minnows jammed in to the bottle (120 to be precise) that it was difficult to get them out! As well as getting quite a buzz out of this rather short initial trip to my old stomping ground, it was great to see that this lovely little stream is finally approaching something like its former glory. I will return soon to try for some other species, having seen some dace, and a few chub, a bit further downstream. I will report further on my results in a later episode. Clive won 24hrs FREE fishing at Hawkhurst so well done Clive. Octobers’ competition is now underway so get your entries in to [email protected] for your chance to win. September’s competition winner will be announced in next month’s issue. September and October are brilliant months for catching carp, you can get good hits of double-figure fish… and a fair chance of hitting the 30+ mark; another mass influx of catch reports over the past 4 weeks prove that September has hit target and with October now upon us we are in no doubt that the biting streak will continue. You can now sense the onset of autumn here at the fish farm with the familiar rusty glow gracing the trees that surround us. The fish can sense the gradual decline in temperature and have already started feeding up to put on their winter weight. Not only have the fish been feeding well but also they're approaching their best weights so it's certainly the time of year to better your personal best fish. Firstly we must say a massive well-done to 12 year old Ben Marchant who managed to net an impressive 12lb 8oz Common from one of our junior lakes. Also to 4 year old Aliyah Page who hooked a brace of 5lb Commons fishing with her dad! Kian Palmer aged 10 caught his PB from our junior ponds – another impressive 8lb 1oz Common. Its great to hear that the juniors are doing so well! MAIN LAKE - As usual for this time of year, Main Lake has begun to fish really well. Jack Dudley fished a 48hr session netting 10 fish in total including a 24lb Common on cell and a 26lb Catfish. Dale Parsons had an impressive scaled 33lb 13oz Mirror on halibut pellet. The big Cats i.e 80lb and 70lb remain unstoppable, smashing up everybody in their path! Dove Lake - Again has produced really well with some nice specimens coming out. Lots of nice upper 20's have been caught. Swim 8 which is usually avoided by anglers due to limited space has been particularly productive so it is certainly worth considering especially by those fishing a day ticket. This is the only swim whereas you can fish behind the island and along the reeds; it seems to be the ultimate hiding place for the savvy Dove Lake carp. Rob Tong fished a 48hrs session from swim 3 and had 6 commons to 24lb 4oz, the largest being a beautiful silver-coloured Common caught on TSM Evil Bait. Tom King fished for 3 days and managed to hit his new PB with a 36lb Mirror on Purple pop-up fished over a bed of pellet. The carp however have been a little slower but the fish that are showing are of a great standard mid 20's seem to be the average size almost at the moment with every other fish you hear about being a mid 20 best out has been a 32lb common but 3 30's this month, Fantastic!! Again better catches have come to plenty of bait doesn’t seem to matter what it is as long as there's something for them to eat when they get their heads down. The open water at the far end of the lake seems to have produced the better catches. COARSE LAKES - The mornings are starting to get a little slower but by 11am the sport is back to normal, loads of car in the 4 to 15lb range taking pretty much any bait you care to mention, but meat and pellet generally will out fish most baits. CARP FREE - Lots of Bream and Tench pole anglers genrally out fishing most other methods, this is genrally about the way in which they feed with lots of bait going in regulary pellet and meat. Maggot and worm are getting the bream and tench as well but also good roach and perch as well. A lovely koi from Speci 3 for Ollie Connaway Hello and welcome to another month from Tanyard, I am writing this as Steve Boreham and would like to let you know that from the 11th October I will no longer be working at Tanyard Fisheries, I believe it is time for me to move on, but I wanted to say a personal farewell to all of you that I have known and worked with over the last 20 years. Many of you I class as friends and I will miss you all greatly. Over the years I have seen many of you grow up and then bring your kids fishing, I have seen many personal best's caught and even more big grins from kids and adults alike, as good days have been had. The memories of these years will stay with me forever and will inevitably bring a smile to my face on countless occasions in the future. I'm sure I will still see many of you around from time to time. All at Tanyard will stay the same except that Sharons cafe will be closed from 1st December to the 1st February and that the Fishery will be closed 13th December to 4th January. Yet another mid 20 for Mike Gibbs Darren Caller with a 20lb Speci 3 mirror Daniel Reed with a 20lb Speci 2 common Daniel Reed with another Speci 2 common Goodbye to you all fingers crossed those fish keep coming out, Thanks again for all of your support and kind word over the years Steve SPECIMEN LAKE 1 - Has not been fished as much recently but has been producing carp fairly consistently throughout the month best out has been 23lb but plenty of other upper doubles and low 20's have been out. Keep the bait going in for the better results, maize and pepperami have done the best but most of the good quality boilies have had results as well. Where ever the small leaf lily is dying back is a good place to start looking for the carp as in the warmer days it has been alive with fish. As you read this the Pike season will be well under way and there should be plenty of pike between 4 and 12lb making an appearance, usually float fished sea baits work the best however lure and livebait also normally do well. SPECIMEN LAKE 2 - Has seen some great results this month with plenty of multiple catches and fish to just over 30lb pretty much every fish being landed is a 20 with many of them being 23lb to 27lb. All swims have produced well but the inlet has seen the best catches. All the usual boilies are getting fish as is meat and fake corn. Most of the multiple catches have come from adding plenty of bait but over time not all in one lump. SPECIMEN LAKE 3 - Has seen many cats making there last appearances as by the time you read this they will have probably shut up shop unless the weather stays unseasonably warm. On the 20th August Sean Holman set his Cat PB to 25lbs and his catch also included a 13lbs 7ozs Carp and a 14lbs 2ozs Moggie. Arriving for a 5 day break on the 21st August Gary and ably assisted by Wendy, battled through atrocious wet weather………while some of us began building an Ark. Using halibut pellet bait Gary’s catch included 17 x Cats and 10 x Carp. While Gary was “Fighting” a Cat, his 6 year old grandson Kaylem having already landed a small Roach on his own rod, saw Gary’s second rod “Running”. Kaylem then grabbed Gary’s rod to land a 13lbs 8ozs PB Mirror and later he also caught and landed a 18lbs PB Moggie– talk about following in granddads footsteps – very well done!! Freshwater Informer - October 2014 23 Welcome to a brand new Freshwater Informer feature, that sees Barry Reed out on his travels, sampling some of the finest day ticket fishing available in the South East. The feature begins with a visit to a real hidden treasure tucked away in East Sussex! Barry’s Big Day Out! Furnace Brook Fishery, East Sussex A view towards the lodge A 5am alarm call saw me up and about preparing for a drive from home to East Sussex, in order to fish a venue about which I knew very little, but, had heard some great things about. The ‘Road Gods’ were kind to me and after an hour and a half I arrived at Furnace Brook. The fishery is nestled in a secluded valley deep in the beautiful Sussex Weald between Heathfield and Hailsham. I was immediately taken aback by it's tranquility and natural beauty. This is no ‘commercial pool’, but a stream fed 6 acre lake, originally created by the excavation of iron ore many years ago. The banks are lined with lush vegetation and fishing is from the well maintained flat, grassy banks. Alistair and Diane Gould are the proud owners of the fishery. Diane and her son Simon, the head bailiff, had lived on the site for many years and managed the day to day running of the business. However, a few years ago, Diane and Alistair had the opportunity to purchase Furnace Brook and pursue their joint, long held vision of creating a haven of 'peace, tranquility and quality fishing'. By working with nature and some trusted friends, they are beginning a programme of development for the fishery, which has at it’s heart, nature and the environment. One of Alistair’s plans is to reinstate the fish farm and hatchery building, which fell into disuse 20 years ago. Facilities at Furnace Brook are very good. Within the lodge is a kitchen area, with a microwave and hot drink making facilities and will very soon see hot food being available. Toilets are available alongside the lodge and there is ample parking. Fishing is available 24 hours a day, with day tickets starting at just £8. Concessions are available for juniors and seniors. My arrival at Furnace Brook saw me meeting up with Jonathan Watt (picured left), who works closely with the Gould family in developing the fishery. Jonathan was going to be fishing with me for the day and had promised me a great day out and true to his word, I was not to be disappointed! Jonathan explained that Furnace Brook was a truly mixed fishery. He said that you really never know what the next fish will be when the tip goes round or the float buries beneath the surface! The lake holds carp to over 20 lbs, mainly old ‘English estate’ commons (those long slender torpedoes!), mirrors, crucians, roach, rudd, tench, bream, barbel, pike and some other surprises! We selected a couple of swims about halfway along the lake, which gave access to some far bank cover and the original river bed, all within comfortable casting distance. The fish were already active, with much fizzing and movement. Alistair must have told them I was coming! I decided to fish the quivertip, about halfway across and Jonathan selected his method feeder rod, as he felt that, although the pole is successful here, a natural venue such as this, should be fished with traditional rod and line. A sentiment that I entirely agreed with! I tied up a straightforward free running cage feeder with a 12'' hook length and size 16 hook. Nothing complicated for me! Groundbait was Sensas Red Bream and Dynamite Red Krill which was enhanced with some liquid additives, brasem, halibut oil and krill oil which I had picked from Jeff at West Malling Angling a couple of day's previously. Hookbaits included a couple of pints of quality red maggots, some mini boilies, soft hooker pellets and the trusty sweetcorn. With the groundbait mixed and riddled, I made my first cast and within seconds the tip flew round and a common carp was soon in the net and this is how it went all day! The fish were really having it! Jonathan said the fish normally take a ‘siesta’ between midday and 2.30pm, 2lb roach for Jonny 24 Freshwater Informer - October 2014 15lb common carp for Barry but not today! The fish kept coming for both Jonathan and myself. I had some cracking, pristine roach, as did Jonathan who had one beauty of 2lbs. As the session progressed and with the feed continually going in, the bream came in and I had numerous fish to about 4lbs. It was during this run of bream that the tip hammered round and I was doing battle with something far bigger! The battle went on for 20 minutes testing my gear and 3lb hooklength to it’s limit before I slipped the net under a glorious long, slender common carp, which Jonathan estimated at about 15lbs! What a stunning fish it was. I went on to catch a glorious true crucian of about 3lbs and more pristine, quality roach. Jonathan was having non stop action on the method, landing some nice carp to 10lbs. The fish were taking a multitude of different hook baits, but, really seemed to like the sweet groundbait. Each time the feeder hit the surface, a black cloud of fish were there to pick up the crumbs before the feeder went down to the bigger fish waiting on the deck! We fished until early evening before reluctantly packing up. As the sun began to set behind the trees on the far bank, Jonathan and I discussed our day’s fishing. It had truly been a magical experience catching such a variety of quality, pristine fish in such a unique, tranquil environment. With the kit all stowed away in the car I thanked Jonathan for his company for the day and the opportunity to fish at Furnace Brook. As I drove home, tired but happy, I reflected on my ‘Big Day Out’. It had every element of that perfect day's fishing, great company, great location and wonderful fishing. Even the weather was perfect! Furnace Brook is now permanently locked into my sat nav, as I will definitely be returning very soon! If you would like to enjoy a unique fishing experience at Furnace Brook Fishery, you can contact Alistair and Diane on 01435 830835, or email them at [email protected]. Alternatively, visit the website at www.furnacebrookfishery.co.uk or see them on their Facebook page. As from Sunday 26th October 2014, a number of open matches will be held at Furnace Brook. The sun goes down on a perfect day Sea Reports Dungeness Latest catch reports on www.seagullfishingtackle.com BEACH REPORT September was a real false dawn...a few early codling then a return to summer? You just can’t forecast the weather, October is the ‘key’ month that can make or break the cod season, we need the equinox storms to bring the fish into the beach...so here we go, fingers crossed! Here are a couple of the September reports... This report came in Dave Wood Brignall fishing Septembers DAA match... "Found a couple of nice sole tonight on the point in the DAA comp . Was trying a new rig I have made hooks where semi circle sakumas flouro hook links . Lug tipped with squid at range." The sole fishing has been superb; it has been building over the last three or four years, great news. BOAT OUTLOOK FOR OCTOBER We are all waiting on the weather...a lot of people think this could be the best codling season in recent history...the signs are looking good. Yes there are other species to go for, but when cod fever strikes there is only one fish to catch. BEST BAITS As I said before...for October it’s back to the ‘classics’...Lugworm, squid and cuttlefish! BEACH OUTLOOK FOR OCTOBER This is a great time of year when the fishing can take off...if we get the right weather, Tradianilly the month for channel whiting and the first onslaught of the winter cod. If we get the autumn gales, so keep a beady eye on the weather to get on the back of a ‘blow’. BEST BAITS A time for the ‘classics’...lugworm/ragworm with squid/cuttlefish cocktails. BOAT REPORT We had some good black bream and red gurnard fishing on the charter boats, also some nice bass but after a week of north easterly winds keeping the dinghies ashore we are all waiting for a change in the weather. WHAT A BEAUTY I mean the fish not Mr Burton... "Hi Tony, ‘No Fear' Nick crept out from the Varne Boat Club for a couple of hours to ‘secret’ wreck and was rewarded with two good bass the biggest shown was 11lb 3oz." North Kent Been a quiet month with mostly flatfish and whiting making up catches with the usual favourite marks giving the best bags. One or two small codling have been reported, but, these have been undersized and returned. An excellent piece was written in the September issue of Sea Angler magazine about fishing the Thames near the Dartford crossing. It made for interesting reading. Dover/Samphire Hoe The first half of the Admiralty pier fished well through September with pouting, pollack, whiting, dogfish and mackerel making up the bulk of catches. The turret area has produced some good bass to 10lbs and this should continue through October. I understand the pier entrance will be closed from late September for a while, restricting access, so please check before you travel. The Hoe has produced pouting, pollack, wrasse, dogfish and some mackerel. Folkestone/Sandgate/Hythe The beaches in the area seem to have been the most productive spots in Kent, particuarly on night tides. Codling to 3lbs, although the bulk are under 2lbs, soles, dogfish, pouting and hordes of whiting making up catches. Please remember to return all undersized fish, especially the small codling. Good news is that Folkestone pier is expected to re-open in late October, in time for the main winter fishing period. If you have any good sea catches from the area, especially with photographs, then please let us know at the Informer, so we can include them in our sea section. HOOK LINE AND SINKER Stockists of SEA COARSE, CARP As I put this together we have had a week of north westerly winds (high pressure) this wind direction clears the water bringing in the ‘whitebait’ followed by the mackerel, the forecast at the moment is more of the same and getting hotter. Here is a report from Mike of Greatstone... "Hi Tony Fished today 11 September at the back of the power station. Most of the mackerel were small and put back. This was my only keeper when I took this picture. Then I was about to go home and another shoal turned up so ended up with 6. We are now getting to end of the mackerel season this year. This could be one of last to posted up from Dungeness unless anyone knows different. They say they are around until the first frosts. Cheers Mike" Here are the latest results from the DAA match on the 14th September and current standings, with a turnout of 23 the match series goes from strength to strength. Following a drive around the huge 1500 acre lake I discovered that some anglers had been there all week practising. Bearing in mind that many of these anglers are International standards I felt a bit daunted at the prospect of the forthcoming day. How did the big day go? I did manage to eat a big breakfast even with the nerves, but felt as if I ate it sideways as I did not want to be late. On arrival at Grafham, with the rain still pouring, I was checked in and a random computer draw decided who is in a boat or on the bank for the first half of the day. We were all given a lovely goodie bag and a VIP badge and I went off to the jetty to put on my life jacket. As there were two to a boat I had to make a fast judgement on who to ask to spend the morning with, a nice gentleman as it turned out! We started to fish in the far end of the lake opposite the lodge and drifted in the water. In regards flies etc. all I can say is I tried every fly in my five boxes!!! Montanas, Cats, Damsels, Daddys, Orange, White and Black Lures. In particular I tried all manner of wet flies as all the chaps were saying that the fish were taking small natural food just under the surface film. I also tried muddlers as these are one of my favourite flies for reservoir fishing but to no avail. My only crumb of comfort was the fact that all the locals were heard to say how tricky the conditions were (the water level was down 40%!). And as Peter Winder has said "never mind there's always next year". Did you have much luck on the water? 3 fish...............£30 4 fish...............£38 Contact Jim on 01435 860841 / 07850 203876 for details A day out at Bewl Water I promised to take my nephews’ two boys Bobby & George Baldock fishing before their summer holidays finished, so I arranged to take them along with their Granddad to Bewl Water to enjoy a spot of spinning for Trout, Perch & mayb a Pike. What a day we had, their faces say all that needs to be said! The points system is such that you have to catch on both parts of the day, so you must land your fish both in the morning and afternoon boat and bank. My lack of catching in the boat, along with many others, meant that I was out of the running before lunch! The day ended at 4.30 with a very comprehensive hot buffet while the final weigh-in took place which was a nice way to end a very interesting day. Finally, the fishing is excellent at this time of year especially after a long hot summer. It’s very nice to start lighting the fire and see lots of fish being caught! Buzzers are brilliant, Daddies are a definite and Montanas a must. Tight Lines! From us all at Brick Farm Lakes I’m not sure who enjoyed it most, the boys or the old fellers? All I do know is they slept well on the way home! Andy Lush “The Friendly Fisherman” Buckland Lake Fishery Cliffe, Rochester, Kent TROUT LAKE – The changeable weather this month has made trout fishing a little unpredictable. Fishing from a boat moored in the middle of the lakes always produces fish though as the water is at its deepest point. The biggest trout caught was an 18lb beauty. Buzzers and gold head nymphs have both worked well. Now the weather is slightly cooler we will be re stocking soon. Bewl Water Lamberhurst, Kent Fishing has varied from day to day, depending on the weather conditions. Bright days with little or no wind have proved quite difficult. The fish are still mainly being caught from the top and continue to spread out across the reservoir. After rising to 18c, the water temperature has now dropped to 17c. Rod average for the week based on returns is 2.75. Best areas for boats have been The Main Bowl, Hook Straight and the North end of Bewl Straight. Bank fishing is improving very slowly. Best areas are Chingley, Bramble Bay and Seven Pound Creek. Successful flies have again been Minkies, Cormarants, Hoppers, Diawl Bachs and Hare's Ears. The BBFC Annual Team Invitation Flyfishing Match took place on Wednesday 10 September. 108 anglers caught 284 trout giving a rod average of 2.63. Generally, most people have caught fairly easily, some days recording a 100% catch rate! The fish are still quite active, due to the cool spring water, however catching them requires a bit of subtlety rather than splashing and crashing about with a big horrible lure! Small, weighted flies - damsels, hare`s ears, stalking bugs, bloodworms and buzzers have been very effective. Generally speaking the fish have been quite deep, but they have been moving higher in the water in the afternoons, especially if the breeze puts a ripple on the surface. There are a lot of Daddy Longlegs around at the moment, so a dry daddy or a goldhead daddy is a very effective way to catch. Rainbows to 11lb and Browns to 9lb were among the best caught this month. Recently we held the annual September Singles competition. For those who don`t know, it is one of our regular quarterly competitions - not a dating contest, as someone pointed out recently!!! Running since 1999, It is held in a simillar fashion to the other friendly competitions we have here, but it is an individual match rather than fishing in pairs. This year`s winner was Paddy Hill, winning it for the 7th time. Tony Harrison came in 2nd with Adi Howe in 3rd. A few people have asked recently why we always seem to be weed cutting on the lakes. There is a very simple explanation for this. Since Britain joined the EU, we are no longer allowed to use the weed controlling `chemical` treatments that we Paddy Hill with his September singles trophy used to. These treatments were harmless to and one of his fish that helped him to victory. everything except the weed. Subsequently, all the weed has to be cut by hand, which is both incredibly time consuming and labour intensive and also not as effective as the treatments. Also, it is like painting the Forth Bridge - by the time we have cut the weed in all of the lakes, it is time to start again from the beginning, as we only do small sections at a time to keep the disruption to the fishing to a minimum. The fishing should continue to be consistent through the Autumn, and with the Devon strain of rainbows we are using at the moment, the fish are fighting really well. As always, check the website for weekly updates and a list of fully-booked dates; and don`t forget that pre-booking is advisable.
