Imperial Welcome to the YWCA! This summer we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and it was a time for reflection. Although we have made much progress by outlawing discrimination, we still have far to go. Here at the YWCA we are recommitting ourselves to building a better, more just community. Each year the YWCA holds a Stand Against Racism to raise awareness that the struggle for racial equality still exists. This year we are continuing our Courageous Conversations, a quarterly discussion series to examine and discuss biases, privileges and experiences around issues of race. We are hosting “Undoing Racism” training on October 6 – 8, 2014. Our annual Fall Symposium, which will be held on Tuesday, October 28th, will focus on Raise the Age and will feature Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman, the Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals. New York is the only state, other than North Carolina, that prosecutes all youth as adults when they turn 16. Nearly 50,000 16- and 17-year olds are arrested in New York, the majority for minor crimes, and over 80% of those children who are incarcerated are black and Latino. Our YWCA has been serving Westchester County since 1930 with programs that improve lives, inspire change and create opportunities. We provide safe, welcoming space for women, children and families to learn, share and grow; support women and girls on their paths to education, career and financial success; and advocate for women’s rights and racial justice. We are one of Westchester’s largest providers of early care and education, before-school and after school and are NAEYC accredited. The YWCA is also a recognized leader in health and fitness programs. This year we launched Special Fit, which offers fitness plans to individuals with development disabilities that draws upon our vast experience in health and wellness. We will once again partner with the American Red Cross to offer swim instruction and will introduce new teen swimming, Masters swimming and dance classes. From aquatics to zumba, our YWCA has something for everyone. The YWCA is also the only provider of permanent supportive housing in Westchester County; 193 low-income women call the YWCA home. We hope that all who come to the YWCA leave with a renewed spirit, new skills and stronger lives. A YWCA membership gives you so much more than access to our facility. Becoming a member of our YWCA provides a great way for you to be part of our community. Please consider becoming a mission member of the YWCA by purchasing a Persimmon Membership. The YWCA is here for you and your families. Together we will build a better world. Strong alone, fearless together! New York is one of two states left in the United States that automatically prosecutes children as adults. Roughly 50,000 16 and 17-yearold children are tried as adults every year. Eighty percent of adolescents put through the adult justice system go on to reoffend. Over 70 percent of the children arrested, and 80 percent of those sentenced are Black and Latino. Instead of rehabilitating troubled kids, we are turning them into hardened criminals! Put an end to an injustice that sets us apart from nearly every other state in the nation, and make 2014 the year we “Raise the Age” of criminal responsibility in New York.
