A message from our CEO Maria L. Imperial
Welcome to the YWCA!
This summer we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Civil
Rights Act of 1964 and it was a time for reflection. Although
we have made much progress by outlawing discrimination, we
still have far to go. Here at the YWCA we are recommitting
ourselves to building a better, more just community.
Each year the YWCA holds a Stand Against Racism to raise
awareness that the struggle for racial equality still exists.
This year we are continuing our Courageous Conversations,
a quarterly discussion series to examine and discuss biases,
privileges and experiences around issues of race. We are hosting “Undoing Racism”
training on October 6 – 8, 2014. Our annual Fall Symposium, which will be held
on Tuesday, October 28th, will focus on Raise the Age and will feature Chief Judge
Jonathan Lippman, the Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals. New York
is the only state, other than North Carolina, that prosecutes all youth as adults when
they turn 16. Nearly 50,000 16- and 17-year olds are arrested in New York, the
majority for minor crimes, and over 80% of those children who are incarcerated are
black and Latino.
Our YWCA has been serving Westchester County since 1930 with programs that
improve lives, inspire change and create opportunities. We provide safe, welcoming
space for women, children and families to learn, share and grow; support women
and girls on their paths to education, career and financial success; and advocate for
women’s rights and racial justice. We are one of Westchester’s largest providers of early
care and education, before-school and after school and are NAEYC accredited.
The YWCA is also a recognized leader in health and fitness programs. This year
we launched Special Fit, which offers fitness plans to individuals with development
disabilities that draws upon our vast experience in health and wellness. We will
once again partner with the American Red Cross to offer swim instruction and will
introduce new teen swimming, Masters swimming and dance classes. From aquatics
to zumba, our YWCA has something for everyone. The YWCA is also the only
provider of permanent supportive housing in Westchester County; 193 low-income
women call the YWCA home. We hope that all who come to the YWCA leave with
a renewed spirit, new skills and stronger lives.
A YWCA membership gives you so much more than access to our facility. Becoming
a member of our YWCA provides a great way for you to be part of our community.
Please consider becoming a mission member of the YWCA by purchasing a Persimmon
Membership. The YWCA is here for you and your families. Together we will build
a better world.
Strong alone, fearless together!

NEW! Masters Swimming
The White Plains YWCA Middies are excited to offer
Masters Swimming beginning Fall 2014. It is a program
for adults ages 18 and over who want to improve their fitness,
compete, or refine their triathlon swim. We are a US Masters
Swimming (USMS) registered club. You must be a USMS
member to attend workouts. Our group consists of beginners,
triathletes, and advanced swimmers.
If you are a beginner, you should be able to swim 500 yards
freestyle continuously, and have a basic understanding of
interval training before attempting a workout. If you can’t
swim 500 yards yet, you may want to consider signing up for
a Swim Plan to do laps and build your stamina, or getting an
adult group lesson to learn proper stroke technique.
Workouts are flexible, so come to as many or as few as you like.

Empowering Women, Girls & Families
Mission
The YWCA is much more than just an activity center and is
not only for women. We're people of all ages, shapes and races
working together to make a difference in our community.
Our mission is to eliminate racism and empower women.
With a diverse staff of over 250 employees, the YWCA
provides the following programs:
Women's Residence
Racial Justice Initiatives*
The purpose of the Racial Justice Initiative is to support
the YWCA’s mission of eliminating racism by bringing
attention to manifestations of discrimination, injustice,
oppression, and violence in Westchester County
communities through thoughtful examination of current
events and/or controversial subject matter. Recurring
events include:
Associate Executive Director,
Housing and Clinical Services
(914) 428-1130 / Fax (914) 428-1439
Located at 69 North Broadway in White Plains, the Women’s
Residence offers:
• Safe, affordable housing
• Economic empowerment
• Counseling
• Access to health and fitness activities
• Stand Against Racism – examines the root causes
of racism and encourages connection between diverse
communities with a goal to raise awareness that racism still
exists.
Awakenings
• “Undoing Racism” training - Engages the Peoples
Institute for Survival and Beyond, and focuses on
understanding what racism is, where it comes from, how it
functions, why it persists and how it can be undone.
(914) 428-1130........................................................ext. 302
Since 1987, the Awakenings program, housed at the
Residence, has provided counseling and treatment referral
to 12 homeless, formerly incarcerated women who are in
recovery from chemical addictions.
Encore Plus
Director (914) 428-1130.........................................ext. 306
With funding from the NYC Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and
the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs & Services.
Encore Plus empowers women to become active, responsible
participants in maintaining their health. Stressing the lifesaving potential of early breast cancer detection, the program
provides education and referrals for mammograms to lowincome or under-insured women over 40.
For information about our next seminar or to request a
presentation at your site, please call the Program Office.
Supervised Visitation
& Safe Exchange Program
Director...................................................................ext. 128
Supervised Visitation enables children to maintain healthy
and positive relationships with non-custodial parents while
ensuring safety for the children and the custodial parents.
Monitored, weekly visits take place at the YWCA in White
Plains and in Yonkers. All visits are court mandated.
The program is funded through the Westchester County
Department of Probation and the Office for Women.

• Courageous Conversations – A quarterly discussion
series to examine and discuss biases, privileges, and
experiences around race relations, laws and current events
that impact the community.
• Annual GEMS initiative – creating anti-racism themes
to engage the YWCA GEMS through meaningful dialogue
and the introduction of specific projects, with the purpose
of enhancing their awareness of the affects of racism on
their ability to lead meaningful, productive lives – now,

Special Events & Community
Fall Symposium
The YWCA presents its Fall Symposium on “Raise the Age”
on October 28, 2014 at 8:30 AM at the Jay Heritage Center
located at 210 Boston Post Road, Rye, New York. New York
is one of two states left in the United States that automatically
prosecutes children as adults. Roughly 50,000 16 and 17-yearold children are tried as adults every year. Eighty percent of
adolescents put through the adult justice system go on to
reoffend. Over 70 percent of the children arrested, and 80
percent of those sentenced are Black and Latino.
Instead of rehabilitating troubled kids, we are turning them
into hardened criminals! Put an end to an injustice that sets
us apart from nearly every other state in the nation, and make
2014 the year we “Raise the Age” of criminal responsibility
in New York. For information, call (914) 949-6227 ext. 106.
