Dunedin village completed
The opening of a village centre anywhere in the country
is an occasion to celebrate, but when we opened
Dunedin’s in May, we also celebrated the end of
construction of the entire village. Dunedin put on a
bright, still day for the Village Centre opening, and
bagpipers welcomed guests into the $15 million building.
The event was attended by Mayor Dave Cull, Roman
Catholic Bishop of Dunedin His Grace Bishop Colin
Campbell, members of the local community, residents,
contractors who worked on the village, and Summerset
staff. The stars of the show were the pupils from
Balmacewan Intermediate, whose kapa haka group, music
group and choir performed for the occasion. The Village

Hello everyone
Welcome to your spring edition
of Summerset Life. It’s been a
busy winter, but the longer
days are ahead of us, and I hope
that the gardens in your village
are brightening up with the
warmer weather.
It’s not just the greenery that’s
changing at many villages around
the country. We have construction
underway at many sites, new
residents are moving in, and
our Dunedin village has been
completed. Their new village
centre was christened with a
dusting of snow shortly after its
opening in late May.
Village centres are the heart of
any Summerset village and I was
amazed to witness first-hand
how much of a difference this
building made to the residents.
I especially like how the village’s
closest neighbours, Balmacewan
Intermediate, have welcomed
us into the neighbourhood;
it’s reflected in the way they
performed for us at the centre’s
official opening and in how the
residents and students come and
go through the gate adjoining our
two properties. We’re proud to
have such a fantastic relationship
with the school.
We recently welcomed Beverly
Haines into our Nelson village;
she is the 200th person to make
this village their home. Nelson
has been a spectacularly popular
village – we welcomed the 100th
resident just over a year ago, so
the growth has been amazing. I
visited a few weeks ago and saw
how the residents are getting
the most out of their new village
centre, enjoying the café and
facilities, and how new residents
are welcomed warmly into
the community.
Meanwhile, first residents
have arrived at our Karaka and
Hobsonville villages. Demand
for homes in these villages has
been incredible – so much so
we have released stages early to
cope with the demand. All these
new residents have boosted the
total number of people living at
Summerset to nearly 3000!
We hope that everyone is settling
in well, and we look forward to
getting to know you.

Talking about our generations
Made up of singers from around the Auckland region,
some living in retirement villages, others not, Summerset
NZ Young@Heart are a choral group all aged over 70,
but singing music their grandchildren might be into.
Their next show, called Celebration, is in Auckland at the
Sky City Theatre on 13 September. The performance will
feature students from Remuera Intermediate School, and
show how music brings generations together.
Among the chorus’ number is Juanita Angell, a resident
at Summerset in Manukau, who has been with the group
since its inception though she had to wait till she was
old enough – 70 – to join. “When the US group Young@
Heart came to NZ for a tour and performed at the village,
I was absolutely fascinated by what they were doing. They
wanted me to audition but I was too young and too shy.”
Of the music that the chorus sing, which includes
contemporary artists such as the Black Eyed Peas,
Summerset New Zealand Young@Heart Chorus
Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Pharell, she says, “At the
start, I thought, ‘oh my god, how are we going to sing
this’? But I’ve come to really love the modern music.
These young ones who write that music, there’s a lot
of meaning behind it. There’s a lot of heart.”

Sample village life in Katikati
Our Katikati village is shaping up to be one of our best
yet, as it is situated just 30 minutes from Tauranga with
beautiful views over the water and gorgeous weather.
Summerset residents from other villages now have the
chance to sample life in this growing community.
We are offering short stays in a three bedroom, two
bathroom furnished villa for $50 per night. Upstairs, there
is one double bedroom with en suite. Downstairs, there
is a bathroom, and both a single and a queen bedroom.
The villas are fully self-contained with bed linen and
cooking facilities. Minimum stay three nights, maximum

This month, we welcome Danielle and Neil to Head Office in Wellington.
Danielle Hallett, Customer Database Administrator
Danielle joined the Summerset team
in May in the new role of Customer
Database Administrator.
Part of Danielle’s job is to phone our
Friends of Summerset, a job she says suits
her sociable nature.
Danielle started off by visiting our newest
villages, and says the highlight was getting
to stay two nights at the Dunedin village
where she joined the residents for Happy
Hour and a night of rugby. She says it
was fantastic to join the residents and
experience village life first hand.
Prior to joining the team at head office
Danielle worked for nine years as reception
supervisor for a family owned optometrists
in Wellington.
Neil Cowley, Head of Information Technology
Neil joined Summerset in March, and
as Head of IT, Neil has the responsibility
to ensure all Summerset’s computers,
databases, phones and networks can
cope with our rapidly growing business.
One of the attractions for coming to work
at Summerset was the opportunity to
build IT systems that could grow with
the business.
Before joining Summerset, Neil was IT
Manager at Te Papa where he says his
work involved IT systems that helped
people access information about the
museum and its collections. He has also
had his own multimedia business.
Outside of work, Neil can be found
playing the synthesizer in his home studio,
or hanging out with his 15-year-old son.
Nelson 200th resident charity and lunch
It’s been busy recently at Summerset in the Sun in
Nelson, as the village celebrated a resident milestone,
hosted a charity fundraising luncheon and held an
art exhibition.
Bev Haines, the village’s 200th resident, was
presented with a bottle of wine by Village Manager
James Hamilton (left) and CEO Julian Cook (right)
when he visited the village at the end of July.
The village also marked August Art Month, and
brightened up the clubhouse at the village with art
displays by residents showing such a range of talents;
from watercolour painting to sewing to fabric printing,
cardmaking, crochet and quilting.
And to top off the hat trick, the village hosted a charity
lunch raising around $2000 for Nelson Region
Hospice Trust. More than 27 businesses donated
goods and services which were auctioned off to the
100 attendees.

Development update
Hobsonville
The first part of stage one, comprising 11 homes, is complete and first residents
are making themselves at home. Another 25 homes in stage one are under
construction, and earthworks and civil work is underway as we prepare for stage
two. We’ve also constructed a temporary recreation centre with views to the
water, to help our first residents feel more at home. A swimming pool is coming
soon.

New Plymouth
Construction is well underway at Summerset Mountain View, and we expect
first homes to be finished by December, which should give our first residents an
unforgettable Christmas.
Trentham
We are building an extension to our Trentham village, which will see the village
almost double in size. Cladding is on the first homes, and we expect the first 10
to be completed at the end of this month.
Hamilton
Construction on module three of the Village Centre has begun, and we are aiming
to have it completed by spring 2015. Another 11 villas are due to be completed
shortly, and will be available for residents from October. Ten two-storey villas have
timber framing and roofs, and are expected to be completed in late November.

Trentham
Karaka
The first 10 villas are completed and new residents are making themselves at
home. The main entrance off Hingaia Road is looking good, and we can’t wait to
see how the landscaping takes off with the warmer weather. Delivery of other
villas is progressing ahead of schedule, but perhaps the most exciting news is that
work on the Village Centre has begun.
Nelson
Nelson’s Village Centre is to get more care apartments and care beds, which are
under construction now and expected to be finished by the end of March next
year. The village will also be getting more villas by the end of this year.
Karaka
Warkworth
The last villa to be constructed in Warkworth has just been completed, and
delivered ahead of schedule. We’re to start work on 36 care apartments later
this year.
Katikati
The last of this year’s villas are almost complete for handover, and the Village
Centre is looking good to open in November.
Ellerslie
We were recently granted resource consent to build our village on Harrison Road,
Ellerslie. The proposed village will consist of a mix of villas, apartments and care
apartments, along with a care centre and village centre. We’re working through
construction planning and will keep in touch.
