LOOK WHO’S TALKING
When money speaks the truth is silent.
—Russian proverb
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
When the fathers of the Second
Vatican Council met to discuss the sacrament of
penance, they were required to draw up a new rite,
including several forms. The hot button for debate
was so-called “general absolution,” by which a
penitent could be absolved of sin without confessing to a priest. This was a difficult debate, compounded by widely varying traditions in both East
and West. Some were surprised to learn that the
Holy See had already given permission, during the
First and Second World Wars, for this form. In
1944 the Vatican issued a decree saying this form
was valid under extreme conditions, which bishops
in mission lands and Latin America took as a kind
of “blanket permission.”
Thus, the fathers of the Council were
alarmed to find this practice fairly widespread, not
only in war, but in peaceful places with huge numbers of faithful and few priests. Although they
eventually produced a ritual with three different
forms, the forms are not considered equal, and the
enriched and revised individual form is preferred.
The enrichments include a welcome of the penitent, a sign of the cross with an encouragement to
trust in God’s compassion, new texts rich in the
Word of God, praise for God’s mercy, and a dismissal.

Car Needed – Can You Help?
We welcome Fr. Chris Varghese to our parish as a Parochial Vicar. Fr. Chris is a religious order priest and new
to the United States. He needs a car to carry out his
ministry in our parish. If you, or someone you know, has
a car you would be willing to give Fr. Chris it would be a
tremendous gift to him and his ministry. Fr. Chris is not a
mechanic and does not have money for repairs, so a car
would need to be in working order. If you have a car or
an idea of how to help Fr. Chris, please call David at the
Parish Office: 524-7421. Thank you.

Are you called? Do you desire to learn and experience a
deeper spirituality? The mystical tradition in the Catholic
Church, inspired by St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the
Cross, and St. Thérèse of Lisieux, explains how to live in
a closer relationship with the living Christ and the practical caring for others that flows from this relationship. We
are Secular Order Discalced Carmelites (OCDS), men
and women committed to living the fullness of God’s love
through prayer and scripture, with the aid and guidance
of Our Lady. For more information, please call Sylvia Escobar at (209) 545-3893 or (209) 596-9841. We meet

Cuando la gente nos oye hablar sobre la palabra de Dios, se maravillan ante su hermosura y poder;
cuando ven cuan poco impacto tiene en nuestra vida
