Charity Golf Day Saturday 8th June
2014, 3 person Ambrose (NP) for golf
and non-golfers 10:30am Shot Gun
start; please phone Nick PH: 4163 0135,
proudly supported by Blackbutt Towing
and Blackbutt Fuel & Tyres. Nick and Laraine
have been thrilled to receive the support of local
businesses; Queensland National Hotel donated
$2,500 and the Withcott Pony Club $520.
Those funds have directly helped provide patient
assistance grants for patients in the district and a
scholarship for local nurse Sue Cox of Nanango.
Nick and Laraine have also sold a number of
boxes of calendars that have contributed towards
providing these services.
Emerald
The Emerald Committee are grateful to receive
donations from Crack-Up Kids in Capella and the
Lochington Recreational Club. Breast Care nurse
Belinda Guerneiri has been busy supporting patients
and delivering patient assistance grants, with over
$15,000 being provided this financial year to date
for the region. It is a great achievement that BPCAQ
will be funding a prostate cancer care nurse for the
district. Annette Hinrichsen commenced in January.
St George
Goondiwindi
Gloria Cory organised a Morning Tea in October
raising $1741. We are grateful to the Kirri Mirri Mah
Jong Group who donated $283 in January. We’d
like to see patients in the district access the patient
assistance grants.
Barcaldine
Our committee continues to be supported
by some very proactive members of our
community. “Rob Roy Rips it for Prostate”
fundraiser, held in October 2013 at the St
George Hotel was a great success, raising over
$5,000. We would like to say thank you to the
very dedicated group who made this event
happen, through their generous gift of time
and effort and to Rob Roy McQuillan who so
readily volunteered to have his chest shaved
and waxed to raise money to help those who
suffer from prostate cancer.
$4230 was received from the Muttaburra Golf Club from the Boobs and Balls day. Organisers hosted
27 players for the day time golf and 18 players for the night golf and fed about 57 guests. Tambo Golf
Club donated $452 and Strathmore Santa Gertrudis cattle farm donated $500 and the Daisy Cottage
Coffee Club donated $150. The Westn’ Breast & Prostate Cancer Support Group are grateful to these
businesses and individuals for supporting BPCAQ’s work in the district.
Lana Russell, our Breast Care Nurse, is doing
a wonderful job of building the service and
has completed one year in the role. Lana
has attended many functions and events
throughout the year to increase her profile and
to mainly provide education and awareness
about breast cancer. In October, Lana held a
Pink Silhouette morning tea at our local coffee
shop, Stevie Jeans. It certainly was a beautiful
site down the main street of St George, to
see all the lady silhouettes brightly adorning
the lawn and fencetops, a touching tribute
to all the women who have sadly died from
breast cancer.
An enthusiastic group of young community
minded women have banded together to
fundraise for the Longreach district. Peta Ann
Gowing, Rebecca Fickling, and Maree Scutt,
pictured right, have conducted a number of
raffles and stalls in the lead up to the main
Fundraising Dinner event that will coincide
with the Longreach Seminar. There will be shaving of heads and drawing of major prize raffles all
under the stars at the Jumbuck Hotel in Longreach on Saturday 29th March. Peta Ann has reported
that through the fundraising efforts and generosity of the local community they have already raised
$20,000 and are looking forward to increasing that by the end of the dinner.
Toowoomba
Generous Glenrose! The amazing ladies at Glenrose
Patchwork have done it again! As a result of some
committed fundraising during 2013 and their fifth
year of the “Airing of the Quilts” have they have
donated $12,000 to BPCAQ. These ladies are truly
a force to be reckoned with. When they put their
mind to something there is no stopping them. Over
the past five years they are so proud that they have
been able to donate a total of $47,000 to BPCAQ,
and so are we and the many families they have
helped as a result all over the Downs.
The “Airing of the Quilts” is a celebration of colour
and creation that happens on the first weekend in
October every year. It is held at Glenrose Patchwork,
138 Ogilvie Road, Warwick. It is a wonderful event –
put it in your calendars! The ladies are planning on
doing it all over again.
Fraser Coast
Chinchilla/Miles
Joanna Embry and Ann Gibbons were delighted to
meet Glenn Pfluger of Murphy Pipes and Civil to
receive a cheque for $20,000. Glenn would like to
see those funds directly benefit patients in the region.
“There would be few people in our company that
have not been touched by cancer in some way so
it’s a cause that really strikes a chord with our work
crews” Mr Pfluger said. Chinchilla representative
Joanna Embry said the organization is extremely
grateful for the donation, which will assist in the
provision of funds for patient care for Chinchilla, Miles
and surrounding districts. Joanna and Ann Gibbons,
representative for Miles, met with Dr Saba Alessawy to
promote the patient assistance grants on the day Mr
Pfluger announced the donation.
Planning is well and truly underway for
Weengallon Pink Ladies Day (WPLD) to be
held in August. We received a very generous
donation of $10,000 from this event last
year. This brings the amount donated from
WPLD since 2006 to a magnanimous total of
$55,000. An exciting new theme, a delectable
menu, fantastic prizes, a beautiful array of
stalls and an inspiring guest speaker are all
on offer, as well as the chance to catchup up
with friends. Please go to the website www.
pinkladiesday.com to watch the details unfold.
All tickets will be sold online this year so be
sure to check the site to find out when ticket
sales open as they sell very quickly!
Thank you to the St George and Dirranbandi
business owners who have kindly helped to
sell over 70 Boys from the Bush Calendars.
We would love to hear from community minded people in the Wide Bay Fraser Coast district if you would like to voluntarily represent our organization and
to help us raise funds for the Breast & Prostate Cancer Care nurses that we fund in the district. We are currently investing in over $60,000 per year for two
nurses, patient financial assistance grants and a research project being conducted by Pammie Ellem in Bundaberg. Funds raised in the district stay in the district.
Service Delivery
BPCAQ has provided over $35,000 in patient
financial assistance grants in the period from
1st July – 31st January and is expected to reach
$50,000 by 30th June. The patient assistance
grants are generally up to $500 for general
assistance and up to $2,000 for accommodation
assistance for patients living in rural or regional
Queensland. The breast and prostate care nurses
who assist us in delivering this service say that
the grants provide great relief in helping their
patients at a time when they are faced with
many expensive medical bills, transport costs
and are quite often unable to work during
treatment. Our subcommittee volunteers
see the patient financial assistance grants
as the driving force for their commitment
to fundraise on behalf of BPCAQ. Helping
people directly within their community is one
of the most rewarding aspects of the charity
work we do.
We recently received this heartfelt letter of appreciation from Margaret King on the
Fraser Coast which we’d like to share with our supporters;
I wish to thank your organisation most
sincerely for their help during my breast
cancer treatment in Brisbane recently.
I had radiation therapy at Royal Brisbane
Hospital from the 27th November 2013 to the
3rd January, 2014. My daughter acted as my
carer and drove me into the RBH each day,
Monday to Friday, from her home at Marsden.
As you can readily appreciate, the parking
fees were quite high, particularly on the days
when one had to see the doctor too, or the
nurses, as well as the on-going radiation
sessions. Then, there was the petrol!
That transfer of $535 into my account made
all the difference to my emotional well-being.
It removed the anxiety of financial stress. My
daughter, Jenny, kept the money separate in
a special wallet, and also kept all the receipts. When I returned home to Hervey Bay, she had
$40 left, and had to fill up, so you can see how vital that money was in enabling me to face my
treatment in a calm, non-stressful manner.
The breast care nurses are wonderful people, and I’m so grateful to Megan Lynch for her help
overall, and particularly in the application for financial assistance, which she made on my
behalf. My diagnosis of breast cancer, and subsequent mastectomy, was a huge shock. I’m
81 years of age, and did not expect this, so the support, care and knowledge as evidenced by
Megan and Angela, was of immense comfort to me and my husband, and I shall be eternally
grateful to them.
So, once again, many thanks to the Breast and Prostate Cancer Assoc. of Q’ld for their help;
words alone can’t convey how grateful I feel.
Bless you,
(Mrs.) Amy Margaret King.
Thank You for
your support

Cocktail Night - October 2013
Board members and supporters celebrated the BCAQ/BPCAQ 20 year milestone at Hillstone St Lucia
Golf Links in the elegant Rosewood Room. Kay McGrath welcomed speakers Dr Marie Burke and Dr
James MacKean who spoke about how breast and prostate cancer is currently being treated in the
field of radiation oncology. It was a lovely evening to reflect on the achievements and services being
delivered and how BPCAQ has grown during the 20 years since the association was founded.

Private fundraisers and Supporters Initiatives
We are always thrilled when someone calls up to say they would like to support our association by organising a fundraising event
or would like to offer services to breast cancer patients that they would like us to let our members know about. We are grateful
for the initiative of these wonderful supporters!
Maroochydore Rugby Union Club presented a donation of $10,000
to Sandy Cassidy in September 2013. We thank Luke Anderson and
the committee for this amazing donation.
Dr Geoffrey Beadle, Sandy Cassidy, Tracey Plumridge, Gina Fairfax

afternoon of fine food and the most impressive display of raffle
prizes. Dr Geoffrey Beadle provided an interesting talk on the
benefits of research investment and Roger Traves gave thanks to
Ashurst and the Brisbane Women’s Network who organised this
event which raised over $8,500.
About the Breast and Prostate Cancer
Association of Queensland Inc.
In 1993 the Breast Cancer Association of Queensland Inc. was established
with the purpose of using funds raised to benefit Research, Treatment,
Prevention, Community Education and provide support for those with breast
cancer and their families.
In February 2012 BCAQ received permission from the Department of Fair Trading to change our
name and model rules to incorporate services for Prostate Cancer. Our Association is now called
“Breast and Prostate Cancer Association of Queensland Inc”.
A large membership in Queensland will increase the influence it has on governments and sponsors
to assist in the search for better diagnosis, treatments and hopefully, eventual prevention.
