Estonian Velo Club (Eesti Vändameeste
Sõprustkond) (EVC) was founded at the
initiative of Rene Mandri, Jaan Kirsipuu and
Tõnu Vahter with the purpose to join all cycling
fans who are interested in putting together a
team of young male Estonian cyclists who have
outgrown the junior class.

Soumen Pyöräily Nousuun
Soumen Pyöräily Nousuun was founded in autumn 2013 at
the initiative of Marko Vauhkonen. The association unites the
majority of local top cyclists and fans, such as Joona Laukka,
Kjell Carlstöm, Kimmo Kananen, Charly Wegelius and Jussi
Veikkanen, with the aim to create opportunities for those
young Finnish cyclists who wish to make it to the world elite
level. The work began with juniors, and the next task is to put
together a U23 men’s team.

The Estonian and Finnish teams of U23 men are the pillars for
founding the FinEst Cycling Continental Team.

The best U23 cyclists from Estonia and Finland would also be the
members of the professional club because it gives them good
opportunities to compete against professional cyclists, and if they show
good results, the doors to top-level world of cycling will be open. The
professional club can support the team, and vice versa.

WHY DO WE NEED THE U23 TEAM?
• Estonian and Finnish cycling and sports fans need to have a competitive cycling team
racing in both local professional competitions and international championships.
• Cycling is an extremely popular sport around the world, and the Estonians and Finns have
what it takes to compete in high level.
• Producing new stars requires a lot of consistent and professional work with U23 age
group.
• Constant work on team level is very important, first and foremost, in order to show good
results in domestic and lower level professional racings, and Nation Cups with the aim to
receive ranking points – the latter is of utmost importance since it is the basis for
qualifying for different sports events with a large number of participants, for example, Rio
de Janeiro Olympic Games in 2016.
• The work on team level for preparing for the season is especially important for young men
of U23 age group because they lack professional coaching and training opportunities.

MEDALILOOTUSED
The highest hopes for medals at the European Championships in
Tartu are set on U23 men's road race. The race will take place on
the roads of Tartu city where in 2013 Estonian cyclists in team
colours successfully defended on the last stage the leader’s jersey
of the overall winner of Tour of Estonia Gert Jõeäär. The Finns
achieved the strong fifth place (Matti Manninen) at the European
Championships in 2014 and they have participated in Tartu city
races (the route of EC 2015) almost every year.
Among others, we wish to point out from Estonia Martin Laas,
Mihkel Räim, Oskar Nisu and Timmo Jeret who, each year, have
taken a step forward in their development, and currently, are
showing good results among amateurs in France. Among Finns
impressive results are shown by Aleksi Hänninen, Lauri Koski and
Marco-Tapio Niemi, who all participated in the juniors’ road race at
the European Championships 2014.

WHY HAVE A PROFESSIONAL
CLUB IN ESTONIA AND FINLAND?
• It would be important for all cycling fans in Estonia and Finland to have future cyclists as
good as Kirsipuu, Kangert, Taaramäe, Laukka and Veikkanenja to support.
• Estonia and Finland are ones of the few European countries without a team of olympic
hopefuls.
• Currently Latvia has two professional cycling clubs, and in the Scandinavian countries
there are more than ten clubs.
• Professional cycling is quite popular and practiced all over the world.
• Young Estonian and Finnish sportsmen are unable to join amateur clubs abroad due to the
economic recession in Europe. Previously, this was a means of development for an
athlete, as well as opportunity to earn a living, but now the competition has become so
strong that they prefer their own sportsmen to strangers.
• Constant work at an elite level is required in order to produce outstanding cyclists of the
future.
• The cyclists in amateur clubs abroad are not getting stable training, cyclists are left on their
own and without professional help.
• Young sportsmen are motivated to be the best if they have the chance to compete against
famous professional clubs all over the world via a national professional cycling club.
• Parents will be able to encourage their kids to pursue professional cycling as a viable
endeavour when it becomes apparent that there are future development opportunities in
the sport.

A major sponsor can become a title sponsor. The logos of major
sponsors will appear in large print on competition uniforms, on regular
clothes and on support vehicles (2 buses and 2 cars), as well as on the
webpages related to the professional cycling club. The design of the
competition uniform, equipment, regular clothes and vehicles will be
coordinated with the title sponsor. The title sponsor can also become the
title sponsor of U23 junior men team in Estonia and Finland.
