Saint Bonaventure Catholic Parish Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. Matthew 22:21 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 19, 2014 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page two PASTOR’S CORNER Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In this Sunday’s Gospel (Matthew 22:15-21) the Pharisees and the Herodians tried to “entrap Jesus in speech.” They asked him, “Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?” By “lawful” they mean the “Law of God.” If Jesus said it was lawful to pay the tax to Caesar then the Pharisees would accuse him of siding with the Romans who were occupying Israel. The Pharisees would then condemn Jesus for collaborating with these Gentiles and going against God’s law. If Jesus said it was not lawful to pay the tax to Caesar then the Herodians (Herod had been put on the throne by the Romans) would bring him before the Roman authorities for treason against Caesar. It looked like the perfect plan. The enemies of Jesus thought they had sprung the perfect trap to get rid of Jesus. Jesus asked them to show him the coin used for the Roman census tax. Then he asked, “Whose image is this and whose inscription?” The Pharisees and Herdians replied, “Caesar’s.” Jesus responded, “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” The fact that the Pharisees and Herodians could quickly pull out of their coin purses a Roman coin showed that they had no problem carrying the minted property of the Gentiles. They had no problem traveling on Roman built roads and drinking water from Roman built aqueducts. So, of course, “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar.” More importantly, we belong to God. Everything we have is a gift from God including life itself. So, of course, “Repay to God what belongs to God.” Today’s Responsorial Psalm says it well: Give to the Lord, you families of nations, give to the Lord glory and praise; give to the Lord the glory due his name! Bring gifts, and enter his courts. (Psalm 96) Thank you for giving glory and praise to the Lord here at Mass. This is a wonderful way to give to God what belongs to God. During this week I ask you to look for opportunities to “give the glory due his name” by loving God with your whole heart and your neighbor as yourself. JUSTICE & PEACE MINISTRY FOOD DRIVE Sunday, November 2 Aer Sunday Masses 7:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. The St. Bonaventure Justice & Peace Ministry is sponsoring a Food Drive to assist the homeless in our community. Because the homeless lack access to kitchens for cooking their meals, we are especially seeking donations of food that can readily be eaten out of a can, jar or package. Items such as peanut butter, pop-top canned goods, granola bars, and meals-in-a-can are ideal for those who are hungry, lack a kitchen, and need a meal that can be eaten with little preparation. If you are unable to donate food items, a gift card to a restaurant or fast food establishment would be welcome. All donated food and gift cards will go to the St. Bonaventure HOPE Office, who will give these items to the needy. The Justice & Peace Ministry appreciates your support of this Food Drive. We are planning other activities to address the difficult social issues of our time. If you are interested in volunteering in this ministry, please call Deacon Joe Sullivan at 842-9707. G AT H E R Hymnal Drive On the weekend of November 8-9, St. Bonaventure will hold a hymnal drive to help offset the costs of our newly purchased hymnals, GATHER, 3rd Edition. The hymnals have arrived and will be an inspiring and praiseworthy resource in our liturgies for years to come! In the long run, our new hymnals will be a significant savings to the church versus what we would have spent on our current hymnals. However, in the short run, it is a significant expense and we hope you will be able to help defray the cost. THE ROSARY & THE SAINTS Any donation, small or large, will be appreciated, but we have a lasting and meaningful way for you to help. We will be offering, at $20 per hymnal, a DONOR BOOKPLATE. Bookplates will be placed within the front cover of the hymnal so anyone who opens the book will see the dedication. Below are just a few suggested texts: • • • • • • • • Given By In Memory Of In Loving Memory Of/Given By In Celebration Of In Celebration Of/Given By In Honor Of In Honor Of/Given By In Thanksgiving For Any dedication that you wish can be printed on the bookplate. Here are just a few special life events you might want to commemorate: • • • • • • Births Baptisms Graduations Weddings Anniversaries Retirement T he Most Holy Virgin in these last times in which we live has given a new efficacy to the recitation of the Rosary to such an extent that there is no problem, no matter how difficult it is, whether temporal or above all spiritual, in the personal life of each one of us, of our families … that cannot be solved by the Rosary. There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary. —Sister Lucia dos Santos, Fatima seer W hen you say your Rosary, the angels rejoice, the Blessed Trinity delights in it, my Son finds joy in it too, and I myself am happier than you can possibly guess. After the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, there is nothing in the Church that I love as much as the Rosary. —Our Lady to Blessed Alan de la Roche Y We hope that you will seriously consider helping us to defray the cost of our new hymnals by making a donation or purchasing a bookplate. IN LOVING MEMORY OF SR. ANNUNCIATA MURTAUGH GIVEN BY J. WINGATE GREATHOUSE ou must know that when you ‘hail’ Mary, she immediately greets you! Don’t think that she is one of those rude women of whom there are so many — on the contrary, she is utterly courteous and pleasant. If you greet her, she will answer you right away and converse with you! —Saint Bernardine of Siena N ever will anyone who says the Rosary every day be led astray. This is a statement that I would gladly sign with my blood. —Saint Louis de Montfort St. Bonaventure - Our Church a Legacy for Generations H ow do you now enter the church? Do you come in through our main entrance on Springdale? Do you come in through the side doors? Do you leave by the side doors? Do you greet the priest who has presided at Mass? Do you feel connected to the other people with whom you are celebrating? Or are we a community at private prayer? Why do we want to create a new church entrance? The primary reason for changing our church entrance is to work toward our approved Master Plan which envisions a welcoming church with a new narthex. What is a narthex? Building Our Future Our reference guide for renovating our church building is a document created by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, "Built of Living Stones: Art, Architecture, and Worship." It reads ... "The narthex is a place of welcome — a threshold space between the congregation’s space and the outside environment. In the early days of the Church, it was a “waiting area” for catechumens and penitents. Today it serves as gathering space as well as the entrance and exit to the building. The gathering space helps believers to make the transition from everyday life to the celebration of the liturgy, and after the liturgy, it helps them return to daily life to live out the mystery that has been celebrated. In the gathering space, people come together to move in procession and to prepare for the celebration of the liturgy. It is in the gathering space that many important liturgical moments occur: men and women participate in the Rite of Becoming a Catechumen as they move towards later, full initiation into the Church; parents, godparents, and infants are greeted for the celebration of baptism; and Christians are greeted for the last time as their mortal remains are received into the church building for the celebration of the funeral rites. In addition to its religious functions, the Buildingspace Our may Faithprovide access to the vesting sacristy, storage areas, restrooms and rooms gathering for ushers and their equipment." During the repair of our church floor and foundation, we must be out of the church. This gives us a wonderful opportunity to accomplish the liturgical renewal of our worship space. The renovation of our church building will leave no doubt that this is a welcoming Catholic community. St. Bonaventure – Our Church Please support these improvements that will provide a legacy for generations to come.
