TROJAN THURSDAY 10/16/14

TROJAN THURSDAY
10/16/14
I am sorry for missing Trojan Thursday last week. Things were pretty crazy with the
painting of our new Us to our athletic facilities and the selling of the Pink shirts and I did
not have enough time to write out last week’s edition.
Pink Out Update
We were challenged by Woodbridge to pink out our side of the stadium for our game last
Friday night. We did not have much time to plan for this event and ordered 500 Pink Trojan
Army shirts. We had no idea how popular the shirts would be. We sold the shirts last
Thursday and we were sold out by lunch time. We sold all 500 shirts, 100 spirit towels, and
100 bandannas. Just another example of how great our kids are here at UNI.
We would like to give a special recognition to Paul and Karen Miller, Anthony and Cindy
LoBianco, and our very UHS staff member Dana Gaunt for their very generous donations to
the Pink Ribbon Club. Their donations helped us offset the cost of the shirts and allowed us
to sell the shirts at a reduced rate. Thank you very much for your support of UNI and the
Pink Ribbon Club.
Fall Sports
Let’s take a look at how our teams are
doing
Boys and Girls Cross Country– Last Thursday was our first cluster meet for the league at
Irvine Park. The girls were led by Senior Sarah Stern and followed by Sophomore Janine
Bryant. With the help of their teammates the girls finished 4th as a team. On the boys side,
Sophomore Eric Kawana led the way followed by Junior Eli Tita. This weekend the team
will again be competing at Irvine Park in the Orange County Cross Country
Championships. Go Trojan Running!
Football – Our football team came up 3 points short last Friday v Woodbridge. It was a
well-played game and our boys fought hard until the end. The final score was 20-17. John
Kang led our rushing attack with 53 yards on the ground. Wes Jordan threw for 118 yards.
His three leading receivers were Parker Dickey with 34 yards, Matt Abellaneda with 31
yards and two Touchdown catches, and Allahason Jenkins with 32 yards. Our defense held
a powerful Woodbridge offense in check most of the night. Our boys used a late 4th quarter
stand to get the ball back with a few minutes left but were unable to move into scoring
position. Tomorrow night is Homecoming v Beckman. You won’t want to miss this great
game and all of the events that go with the game.
Girls Golf – Our girls have had a great week beating CDM and Northwood. With the wins
we move to 8-3 on the season and 7-2 in League play. Samantha Cabunag shot a 38
yesterday and has been a standout freshman for our team this year. Our girls are ranked
#10 in Orange County and look to close out PCL play with a victory over Irvine today at Oak
Creek Golf Course. Good Luck Golfers.
Girls Volleyball – Our girls fell to Northwood on Tuesday. Maddy Baniels was the stand
out player of the match according to Coach Papell. Our girls look to get back on track this
afternoon as they welcome Irvine to our gym for a 5:15 match. Good Luck Girls Volleyball.
Girls Tennis – The UNI girls tennis team won their 11th straight match defeating Irvine 17
to 1 on Thursday Oct. 9th. The girls followed that win with a 13 to 5 victory over
Woodbridge on Oct. 14th. The win over Woodbridge was the 48th straight Pacific Coast
League victory for the Trojans. Our girls fell to Peninsula yesterday for their first loss of the
season. This was a battle of the two top ranked teams in California. Peninsula is the #1
ranked team and we are #2. It was some pretty impressive tennis being played yesterday.
Our girls are back in PCL play this afternoon as they travel to Beckman.
Boys Water Polo – Our boys put up a great effort v division 1 powerhouse CDM last
Thursday. We ended up dropping the game but Coach Hojreh was extremely pleased with
how hard our boys played. Last weekend our boys competed in the Newport Rib Classic
and went 3-2 overall. On Tuesday we fell to Northwood by a score of 13-6. This season our
boys have been led by Oliver Ma, Kian Matin, Nicholas Injev, Dhruv Nathwani, Matt Moran,
Ryan Pan, and Andy Rasla, This afternoon our boys are back in our pool for a league game v
Irvine. Good Luck Polo.
What’s Happening on Campus
Its Homecoming Week – We have had activities everyday on campus getting everyone
excited for the big game on Friday and the announcement of our Homecoming King and
Queen and the winner of spirit week. Tomorrow we have our Homecoming pep rally where
the class councils will show off their spirit. Tomorrow is also Trojan Army day. Wear your
Trojan Army shirts to school and the game tomorrow.
Tonight is Spirit Night – This is a community event. If you have never seen a UNI
Spirit night you will want to stop by campus tomorrow night to see what all the talk is
about. Each class is given a part of campus that they decorate in an effort to win spirit
points. Our council kids go all out for this night. Not only is the whole campus decorated
but we also have music and food available. We hope to see everyone out on campus tonight
admiring the hard work of our class council kids.
Campus Face Lift – Last week we did some painting on campus to help show off our UNI
Pride. We painted a shield with our UNI U in the middle down the ramp to the tennis
courts/fields, in the middle of the 4 outside basketball courts, and up the ramp to the
crossroads. We plan on painting these Us throughout the rest of the campus in the coming
weeks. Below are a few pictures of what the Us look like.
