Open Day
Outstanding Student Award
Thank you to all parents, students and staff who assisted with another very successful Open
Day last Saturday. Days such as this are opportunities for us to open our doors to the wider
community and to put ourselves ‘on display’. As always, our students are our most eloquent
ambassadors and I was very proud of the way in which they acted as gracious hosts and guides
for our visitors.
I am especially grateful to Mrs Michelle Vienet, President of the Parents’ Association and to all
of the Committees and various support groups who have been preparing for this day for so
long, and who so warmly welcomed our visitors on the day, as well as continuing to support
our students.
I would also like to thank all of our teaching staff who put together the academic displays and
activities, and especially Mr Tim Cross who again very calmly worked as the school’s liaison to
ensure a very smooth day.

Last Week of Classes for Year 12
Open Day
Next week will see the conclusion of formal teaching classes for our Year 12 students. There
will be a series of formal farewells during the week, including the Prize Giving Assembly on
Tuesday morning, with prizes presented by our special guest speaker Mr Andrew (Andy) Lee.
Andy is well-known for his radio and television appearances but perhaps less-well known for
his academic, musical and sporting skills. He attended Camberwell Grammar School from 1994
to 1999. In his final year of school he was a School Prefect, Captain of Games and Captain of
Music, and was fully involved in the life of the school. After Year 12, he studied Commerce at
the University of Melbourne and after completing his studies, began a career in the media. He
is now one of Australia’s most popular personalities. He is looking forward to returning to CGS
for Prize Giving.
On Wednesday morning House farewells will be held with cuff-link presentations by the
Grammarians Association. The day will finish with the Leavers’ Service at St Mark’s Church,
and a Valedictory Dinner to be held this year in the Members Dining Room at the Melbourne
Cricket Ground.
I take this opportunity to thank our Year 12 students for all that they have contributed to our
school community in the time they have been with us. I remind them that the full resources
of the school are available to them during their study leave, and I wish them all the very best
for their examinations.

I am delighted to be able to report that we have now received a planning permit from the
Boroondara Council which enables us to proceed with our next building project. We have sent
our plans out to tender and look forward to receiving responses by the end of this month.
We hope to appoint a builder early in November and there may even be a chance that the
project can commence before the end of the year. This project is the last piece of our current
development plan and has been many years in the making. It will provide us with a beautiful
Chapel at the heart of our School as well as some extraordinary sporting facilities. The building
process itself will present us with some significant challenges over the next two years, but we
will look forward to some wonderful new facilities for our students at its end.

I am sure that all those who were spectators at the Cadet Presentation Parade on Open Day
would wish to join me in congratulating the Officers and Cadets of the Unit on a fine display.
The Annual Cadet Parade is an opportunity for the unit to demonstrate their pride and hard
work to the wider school community and the general public.

Last night I had the privilege of opening the VCE Art Show. Our school has a very strong
reputation across the state in the Arts and it was easy to see why at this show, where our most
senior Art, Studio Art and Visual Communication and Design students displayed their folios.
I was very pleased to announce this year’s Headmaster’s Acquisition Awards, which went to
Marcel McClernon (Art) for his Necessary Evil, to Jack Balfour (Studio Art) for his Expansion
Vessel and to Benjamin Yap (Visual Communication and Design) for his Atterdale Airport Model.
These works will be placed on permanent display around our school. Congratulations to all of

Open Day
On Monday morning at Assembly I had the opportunity to thank the boys for their magnificent
efforts at last Saturday’s Open Day. Most were involved in several activities, and whether they
were playing sport, demonstrating science experiments, taking tours, playing in the Showband
or manning stalls, they did so with good-natured verve and enthusiasm. To give an example
of this involvement, I had the privilege of watching the final of the Inter-Form Debating
competition at 11.30am. Jack Fitzgerald and Darcy MacCuspie (8B and 8R respectively) were
two of the boys opposed to each other in the debate. Shortly after the debate I wandered to
the KAO and there was Darcy, now dressed in cricket attire, bowling to none other than Jack
Fitzgerald. I know that this is but one example and many other boys were involved in a wide
range of activities throughout the day.
Several Grand Finals took place on the day:
• Clifford defeated Macneil in the final of the Year 8 Indoor Soccer competition
• Schofield defeated Macneil in the final of the Year 7 Indoor Soccer competition
• Robinson defeated Clifford in the Water Polo final
• Vi-King Chin (Year 8) defeated William Chang (Year 7) in the final of the Middle School
Chess Tournament
• Lachlan Li (Year 8) defeated Byron Wu (Year 8) in the final of the Weeks Cup tennis tournament
• 8R (Harry McLeod, Darcy MacCuspie and Christian Chene) defeated 8B (Jack Fitzgerald,
James Bickerdike and Jonathan Tan) in the final of the Inter-Form Debating competition
Congratulations also to Luke Sudholz (Year 8), who was presented with an award at the Cadet
Parade for his victory in the shooting competition, which is held at the annual camp. This is the
first time in recent memory that a Year 8 student has won this award.
Year 8 Social
Next Friday we will be hosting girls from Fintona, PLC and Camberwell Girls at the annual
Year 8 Social. This promises to be a great night and I encourage all of our boys to attend.
Preparations have well and truly started and next week we have lunchtime lessons in such
timeless classic dances as The Nutbush and Time Warp. Monash student Emily Syme is also with
us over the next week conducting sessions on etiquette, striking up conversations, creating a
good first impression and image.
Run/Walk for Koala Kids
On Wednesday 29 October we will be holding our annual run/walk for charity. Boys have been
given sponsorship cards and have been asked to gather sponsors for the event. They have
one hour to complete as many laps of a one kilometre course as possible on the day, with
a sausage sizzle to conclude. All money raised will support Koala Kids, an organisation that
supports young people who are fighting cancer. If you are able to help out with the cooking of
sausages from 11.00am on the day, that would be greatly appreciated. Please let Justine in
the Middle School Office know if you are able to help.
Victorian Open Water Swimming Championships
Congratulations to Connor Xu, Joachim Zerelli and Jacob Hunting (Year 8), who participated in
this five kilometre open water event at Hazelwood last Sunday. Connor placed second, Joachim
fourth and Jacob sixth in this challenging event, which are all outstanding results.

Well done to Charlie Harper (Year 7), who returned this week from Adelaide having competed

XI Hockey premiership team in Term 3.

Open Day
What a fantastic, fun filled, family day Open Day proved to be! The sun was shining, blossoms
blooming and the School was alive with activity, adventure and information. This school is what
it is because of the people who contribute so whole-heartedly and participate so fully in its
being. I am in awe of the marvellous work done by parents, staff and boys in putting together
such an enjoyable and comprehensive CGS experience. From the stalls to the classrooms,
information booths and activities, grounds and performances; the School community was
bubbling with enthusiasm and pride. The boys’ performances were delightful. Thank you one
and all for making Open Day such a fine celebration of what we believe and an opportunity to
share our school with visitors.

Run/Walk for Koala Kids
Camberwell Grammar Year 5 students, Angus Oldham, Samuel Parmenter, Nischal Vivekananda,
Emmanuel Yassa, Alex Lew, Elijah Pannozzo and Isaac Hui have recently been informed they
are to be rewarded for their hard work. With the help of their science and classroom teachers,
Mr Davis, Mr Jones and Mr Clark, they entered the annual Science Talent Search run by the
Science Teachers’ Association of Victoria. Science Talent Search is an annual event and is open
to all primary and secondary students up to Year 12.
The young scientists have been invited to attend the Presentation Day on Monday 27 October
held at LaTrobe University, Bundoora. Over 800 wining entries will be on public display. The
boys are congratulated on being awarded minor bursaries, with Samuel Parmenter receiving a
major bursary. Samuel’s high level of work has gained entry into the 2015 BHP Billiton Science
and Engineering Awards.
Due to the overall high quality of entries this year Camberwell Grammar has been awarded
one of the Hugh McKnight Encouragement Awards. This award recognises the high quality of
entries submitted over the breadth of sections in the competition.

Congratulations to Felix Wang of Year 9 who has been chosen to represent Australia at the
2014 Singapore Youth International Badminton Championships in November. This was due to
his recent form in the Under 15 Nationals whereby Felix finished the event with one gold and
two silver medals. Good luck Felix.
Hamish Webber of Year 10 also recently represented Camberwell Grammar in an external
competition (Under 17 Victorian Road Cycling Championships). Hamish finished 10th in what
was a close race to the finish. Hamish is the new CGS Cycling Captain so well done to him on
the position and his recent result.
Good luck to the Kayaking Squad who head to Bendigo this weekend for their first race of the
season. Also, Firsts Basketball, Cricket and Tennis also start their Summer Season campaigns.
As of Monday 27 October though until Friday 31 October only Firsts Teams/Squads will be

If you are keen to change your Winter Sport for 2015 then the Change of Winter Sport
Preference Week is nearly upon us. During the week of Monday 27 October to Friday 31
October students have the chance to change their Winter Sport for 2015. All they are required
to do is collect a form from the Sport Department, fill it in, get their parent’s signature and
return it to the Sport Department by Friday 31 October at the latest. Then, hopefully students
will get their first preference. In some cases though this may not be possible and students are
encouraged to make sure their seconds and third preferences are sports they would also like
to participate in. For more information contact the Sport Department at [email protected]

Have You Chosen Your Winter Sports for 2015?
Boys in Middle and Senior School have a deadline of Monday 27 October for selection of
their 2015 winter sports. Many boys are now thinking about how they will spend their winter
weekends in 2015. Camberwell Grammar offers such a wide range of sports that the choice
can be bewildering.
Snowsports is unlike many other team sports as it tends to involve the boys’ families in the
logistics of getting to and from the mountains, and provides many opportunities for social
events for parents on and off the snow.
Snowsports is a popular choice with families that already spend their winter weekends on the
mountains.
As the snowsports competitive events are predominately in August, many boys find that they
can also participate in another winter school sport or continue their club sporting commitments
that would otherwise clash with school sports on Saturdays.
The snowsports team has a huge range of abilities from absolute novice to national competitors
in snowboard, cross country and downhill skiing events. Participation is our primary goal.
If you would like to know more about Snowsports as a first or second winter school sport, come
and have a tea or coffee and croissant with us so we can answer your questions.
