Celebrating the Presence and Power of God With Us
Come! Let Us Worship Together
YOU ARE AN ENCOURAGEMENT FOR ME! Thank you for your
active participation in the life and worship of our parish. Our recent survey
of Mass attendance found that over the past year we have experienced a 8.3%
decrease in Sunday worship and since January 2012 a 34.7% decrease.
Of our 1,026 individual members (660 registered households) we can assume
that we now have a weekend Mass attendance rate of 33.2%. Generally
attendance is equally divided between the three Masses we now have. Keep
encouraging one another. Keep inviting those who have drifted away or may
not have a church to join you for worship. Practice hospitality toward all.

NEXT WEEKEND WELCOME TO OUR PARISH for Masses with
our community Fr. Michael Boehm, Vicar for Priests for the Archdiocese of
St. Louis. Fr. Mike was ordained in 1994 and lives with Fr. Kevin Schroeder,
who now serves as Pastor of St. Michael’s Parish (Shrewsbury). As a
seminarian in 2005 Fr. Schroeder lived here and helped with our transition.
I will return on October 27th after spending some time with friends in New
York City continuing the celebration of our 40th anniversary.
REBECCA’A GARDEN OF HOPE
At the Bellefontaine Neighbors Fair
I learned that children are still
enrolling in this program
and that volunteers are still needed.
It provides tutoring, mentoring, and
homework help in reading, math,
writing, and spelling enrichment—
with a meal and evening activities!
All striving to show God’s love and
provide practical help for children to
succeed in their education and lives.
Give them a call if you’d like
to know more about enrolling or
volunteering for the greater good of
our community!

DELIGHTFUL
VITAMIN D
Did you know that you could get nutrients your body
needs just by walking around?
Believe it or not, at least when it come to vitamin D,
it is possible. Simply getting enough sunlight—just
10-15 minutes 2-3 times a week– causes your skin
cells to manufacture the vitamin.
Plus, vitamin D is “fat soluble,” meaning that any
excess is stored in the body. In fact, with just a
minimal amount of sun exposure during warmer
months, your body can store enough vitamin D to
get through the winter.
That’s good, because vitamin D does delightful
things for your body. It builds bones and teeth by
helping the body utilize calcium and phosphorous.
Higher vitamin D intake will lower risk of cancers of
breast, prostate and colon.
Of course, vitamin D is easy to get in your diet, too,
because milk is fortified with Vitamin D. Other
sources include oil fish such as salmon, egg yolks
and fortified breakfast cereals.
How much do you need? If you are under 50, the
recommended daily allowance is 200 IU a day,
about what you’d get from 2 glasses of milk.
Children, pregnant women and people over 60
require 400 IU.
Peace and Hope,
S. Rose, SSND, RN

Communion of Saints Devotion
The month of November has traditionally been a
time when the Church celebrated the
Communion of Saints, prays for those who have
died, and prepares to welcome the one St.
Francis called “Sister Death”. In keeping with
this tradition, we will once again be creating
Communion of Saints devotional areas, on
which we will honor, not only some recognized
saints of the Church but our own loved ones
who have gone before us. We are inviting
families to share with us a photograph (in a
frame if possible) of loved ones who have died.
We will display these in our devotional area
along with the relics of saints. In order to design
the devotional space, we ask that all
photographs be turned into the Parish Office or
brought to the sacristy in the church by October
26th.
Al photos will be returned in December.
FAMILY
As the family goes, so goes the nation
and so goes the whole world in which we
live.

If you couldn’t make it to this year’s Missouri Catholic Conference (MCC) Annual Assembly, don’t worry!
We have highlights from the day posted on the MCC website, MOcatholic.org, including an audio recording
of the keynote address given by St. Louis Catholic theologian Dr. Ed Hogan. What is the difference between
tolerance and mercy? Dr. Ed Hogan, a father of 6 children, answers this question while explaining how
families can promote a culture of mercy, as recently called for by Pope Francis. On the MCC website you can
also read a transcript of the homily given by Springfield-Cape Girardeau Bishop James Johnston and view
photos from the day.
