It is the day when we are being asked to dig into our hearts to assist the young local church overseas. We are being called to play our part in helping to bring the word of God to those who most hunger for it in the form of support for our many young churches. “That they may have life” is our theme for Mission Month and as such our spiritual and financial offerings are crucial for the work of the Church overseas. The Holy Rosary will be recited in Derrinturn graveyard each Tuesday night during the month of October (The Month of the Holy Rosary). Next Rosary on Tuesday 21st at 8pm with all meeting at the cross. This is irrespective of weather conditions, so a raincoat and torch may be necessary. All are welcome to come along and pray for your relatives and all those interred. Church Gate Collection: The Irish Society for Autism will hold a church gate collection this weekend 18th & 19th October. Your support is gratefully appreciated. Harvest Mass: This year’s Harvest Mass will be held on the weekend of 26th October in both Derrinturn and Kilshanroe, to give thanks for the abundant harvest of crops and turf in the Parish in 2014. All in the Parish are very welcome to join in thanksgiving. Revenue Returns: The Revenue CHY-3 forms have been sent out to all those who have contributed €250 or more to our Development Fund. We would be grateful if you would complete and return them as soon as possible. If you are paying Income Tax on; wages/salary whether you are self employed or a PAYE worker; or are in receipt of a private pension, as a registered charity - we can claim a tax rebate. Last year we received a refund of almost €10,000 which was used to pay off the Parish Loan. All of the money will be spent on activities and programmes in Kildare, run by the committee of volunteers. The Arthritis Ireland volunteers collected a total €8,783 with €490 raised in Carbury. Tickets will be on sale soon. Please support this worthy cause. Dog Found: A dog was found in a drain on the Edenderry-Enfield road on Saturday 20th September. It appears that he had lost his way. He is thought to be a Collie cross-breed, and is black and white in colour. He is old and not in the best of health. If you have any old or cancelled stamps, they can be left into the Parish Office or church sacristies and we will send them along to the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart to support their work on the missions. Stamps can be from any country but should not have tears, rips or damaged/cut perforations. Many thanks to all those people who have already left in old and used stamps. Mission Month: The theme for this year’s Mission Month of October is “That they may have life”. Pope Francis urges us to immerse ourselves in the joy of the Gospel. Sharing this message of Faith and hope to our modern world is our Christian duty, as is assisting financially the growth of our young churches in the South. The Irish Cancer Society’s Care to Drive service is currently seeking volunteer drivers to drive local patients to and from their hospital chemotherapy treatments. We are looking for volunteers to pick a patient up at their home, drive them to the door of the hospital, then when they have finished treatment, to pick them up again and bring them home. Speakers include Mr John Quinlan, Orthopaedic Surgeon at Tallaght and Naas Hospital who will give a comprehensive talk on 'Hip and Knee Surgery and Replacement’. Mr John Church CEO Arthritis Ireland will speak about the organisation’s investment in research to find new treatments and ultimately a cure for arthritis, one of their key objectives. Completed Text alert forms can be returned to the Parish Office. Blank forms are also available. The Pioneer Association promotes the Short-Term Pledge for November in honour of the Holy Souls. November is traditionally dedicated as the Month of the Holy Souls when we pray in a special way for family/relatives/friends that are no longer with us. By a long-standing Irish custom, many people abstain from alcohol for the month of November and offer this sacriﬁcial act for the benefit of their deceased loved ones, and for all the Souls. Only €5.00 for a great night out and refreshments are included. All are welcome. Who does what at mass? At every Mass you will notice that some members of the assembly have different jobs. We call these jobs ‘ministries’. At Mass the Priest leads us and encourages us to play our part in the celebration. How does he do this? He leads us in prayer, invites us to listen to God’s word, helps us to understand and make sense of the Word of God in our daily lives through his homily, takes our gifts, the bread and wine, offers them to God and prays that by the power of the Holy Spirit they will become the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Servers are normally boys and girls who have received their First Communion. Their job is to help the priest during Mass. They can carry books, bring water and wine, wash the priest’s hands and ring bells. Minister of the Word: Even though we sometimes call this person the reader, the proper name is ‘Minister of the Word’. The readings of Mass come from the Bible. They are the Word of God and so we can say that we hear God speaking to us through the voice of the Minister of the Word. Autumn Prayer O God of Creation, You have blessed us with the changing of the seasons. As we embrace the autumn may the earlier setting of the sun remind us to take time to rest. May the crunch of the leaves beneath our feet remind us of the brevity of this earthly life. May the steam of our breath in the cool air remind us that You give us your breath of life. May the scurrying of the squirrels and the migration of the birds remind us that You call us to follow your will. We praise you for your goodness forever and ever. Amen.
