Lent begins on Ash Wednesday 18th of February and ends before Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday 2nd of April. Lent has six Sundays (Palm Sunday being the sixth Sunday). There is a double focus in Lent – baptism and penance. It is the final stage of preparation for adults who will be baptised at the Easter Vigil. For those already baptised, it is a time to recall their baptism and prepare to renew it at Easter. Lent calls us to a time of self-reflection, penance and turning back to God as we ready ourselves to renew our baptism. It is a time to reflect on God’s word to us in our lives today, to pray, fast and reach out to others in charitable action. We can look at Lent as a communal journey of the Christian community back to God, our annual retreat culminating in the joy of Easter. (source: www.kandle.ie). First Communion Update: Please observe the traditional protocol of no camera or videos during the First Communion masses this year. (Bishop Denis has made the same request for Confirmation). This is to help our children appreciate the beauty of the day they celebrate with their families. It also helps to keep the focus on Jesus, who is the Bread of real life for them. Children are always welcome to attend mass with their parents every Sunday. This is one of the ways we show our love for Jesus and each other. Enjoy the day! At the age of 10, his parents got divorced and he made an unconscious decision not to love any more. At the age of 13 he had started stealing. By 15 he was put in a detention centre (youth prison). When he left home after having been released, his only qualification was stealing, so that's what he did. From the age of 19 he became involved in organised crime. After nearly taking a man's life, something incredible happened and his life began to change. He began working with at risk youth, showing them that there is another path other than the violent one he took. For further details on his remarkable life stories, and his change from crime to his current role in religious ministry, consider reading some of his books as suggested by Fr. Fitzpatrick. We have heard the Word of God and now we come to share in the Bread of Life at the altar. The first part of the Liturgy of the Eucharist is about preparing the gifts that we bring to the altar. The most important gifts that we bring are the bread and wine. The bread is placed on something which looks like a plate. We call this a paten. The wine is in a glass jug. These gifts are placed on the altar. One of the first gifts that you will notice being prepared is the gift of money. You will see people moving through the church with a basket or a bag for the collection. Everyone is asked to put some money into the basket or bag. This money helps to pay for all the things that are done in the parish, including helping those who may not have enough for themselves.
