People are welcome to bring their own candles with their names on them and leave them on the table at the Altar to have them blessed. Communion Update: Please observe the traditional protocol of no camera or videos during the First Communion masses this year. (Bishop Denis has made the same request for Confirmation). This is to help our children appreciate the beauty of the day they celebrate with their families. It also helps to keep the focus on Jesus, who is the Bread of real life for them. Children are always welcome to attend mass with their parents every Sunday. This is one of the ways we show our love for Jesus and each other. Enjoy the day! St. Brigid’s Day: Crosses will be available for sale at masses this weekend on Saturday 31st of January and Sunday 1st of February in Derrinturn Church. All funds raised will go to school funds. The St. Brigid’s Cross was traditionally believed to protect the house from fire and disease. It was also placed in cow sheds to protect animals. It was passed from one person to another as a symbol of peace and goodwill. As people hung up the cross they said this prayer: “May the blessing of God and the Trinity be on this cross, and on the home where it hangs and on everyone who looks at it.” Marriage and the Family: On Christmas Day 2009, St Mel’s Cathedral in Longford was destroyed by fire in the early hours of the morning. Just before Christmas, the cathedral was reopened after five years of restoration work. One painting alone survived the inferno (in which temperatures apparently topped 1000 degrees Celsius). While everything around it was incinerated, a painting of the Holy Family survived. According to the senior project manager of the restoration work, this canvas should have been one of the first canvasses to be set alight. “We will never know how it survived” he said. I think we could read into this remarkable occurrence as a parable for the family - in Ireland and elsewhere – today, The family is threatened by a roaring inferno and it would take a miracle for it to survive - but this is a miracle we can be assured will happen; God will not allow his family to be destroyed. (Taken from an article by Rev. Gavan Jennings – Position Papers, Dublin). Blessing of the throats will take place in our Parish after 9:30am on Tuesday 3 rd of February in Derrinturn Church, on the feast of St. Blaise, who is the patron Saint of people with sore throats. The blessing is a sign of the people's faith in God's protection and love for the sick. HOMILY We all sit down to listen to what the priest/deacon has to say about the readings we have heard and how we might be able to put this into practice in our everyday lives. We call this the homily. The priest/deacon normally stands at the ambo to give the homily. At the end of the homily the priest may sit down and we can spend a few minutes in quiet prayer. This time lets us think about what the priest has said and ask God to help us to live as he would want us to.
