FuBio 2 “Joint research” program Workshop to kick-off substance planning Otaniemi 7.10.2010 Niklas von Weymarn FuBio Program Manager, Forestcluster Ltd. General background • Forestcluster Ltd. was established in 2007 to implement the strategy (first “SHOK”, i.e. a Strategic Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation) • The first research program of Forestcluster Ltd., Intelligent, Resource-efficient Production Technologies (EffTech), was launched in 2008 EffNet & EffFibre programs fall 2010 onwards • The second research program, Future Biorefinery (FuBio), was launched March 1st, 2009 • The third research program, Forward Customer Solutions (FoCuS), was launched in August 2009 Forestcluster Ltd. Tampere University of Technology University of Eastern Finland University of Helsinki University of Oulu 2 FuBio background • FuBio is a 5-year research program of Forestcluster Ltd. • FuBio was initiated as one program (joint research) in March 2009 with financing secured for the two first years. • The annual volume of FuBio, during the two first years, is about 10 M€. Current financing will run out in March 2011 3 General guidelines from the FC Board 1. Move slowly from 100 % joint research towards an increasing share of more specific topics – Programs focusing on selected industrial value chains – Performed by a smaller group of partners From one program to several programs 2. Incorporate company R&D departments in SHOK R&D Part of the R&D is done within companies 4 SHOK program framework in accordance with Tekes • Each program should have at least 5 companies along (can be partly outside Forestcluster Ltd.) • Each program should have at least 3 R&D organizations or universities along • The annual volume is above 3 M€ 5 The position of FuBio and other SHOK programs in the Finnish R&D scene Academy projects Public Tekes projects SHOK programs Public EU projects Public funding > 50 % Industry projects Ind. pilots Comm. plants Product support Private funding > 50 % 3.5.2010 NVW 6 FuBio phase 2 planning: Steps taken Seminar 17.6. Board Main objective of FuBio (unchanged) • The main objective of FuBio is to establish, in Finland, a world-leading competence platform in the field of wood biorefinery R&D Focus of FuBio: Novel value chains, in which wood is refined into new materials & chemicals A competence platform comprises many attributes, like people, business concepts, processing technologies, R&D and testing facilities, networking, etc. 9 Puusta sen ainesosista valmistetut materiaalit FuBio – ja Building bridges from a pulp mill to new – esimerkki markets PAPER & BOARD WOOD PRODUCTS HEALTH TEXTILES & FABRICS PLASTICS 10 From one program to four programs Theme 0 Program 1 Theme 1 Program 2 Theme 2 Program 3 Theme 3 Theme 5 Program 4 11 Link to the major markets TEXTILES & FABRICS Theme 0 Program 1 Theme 1 Program 2 Theme 2 Program 3 Theme 3 Theme 5 Program 4 Products from dissolved cellulose Production of hydroxy acids and products thereof Wood extractives and lignin-derived constituents in wood products Joint research PLASTICS WOOD PRODUCTS PAPER & BOARD HEALTH 12 Program 1: Joint research • This program comprises selected topics of joint interest, including biomass fractionation, hemicellulose products, fibre modification, modeling & “pre-engineering”, etc. • Potential markets: paper, packaging, chemicals, healthrelated, etc. • FC partners: All • Coordinator in planning phase: Niklas von Weymarn (VTT) • Tutor: Lars Gädda (FC) 13 A bit more specific.. • • • • • • Techno-economical modeling, including in continuation also an instrument to catalyze small-scale piloting activities (pre-engineering) – Including concepts for use of the whole raw material (e.g. cooking liquors when cellulose is used), and use of residue cellulose after HWT Most of the biomass fractionation activities from the current FuBio: – Pressurized hot water treatment (choice of wood raw material!) – Sub-critical water treatment for lignin activation (200-250 C) – Super-critical water treatment for cellulose dissolution (300 C and above) Advanced separation technologies (incl. wood and ionic liquids) Products from hemicelluloses – Esp. xylan & GGM (economics to be considered in preparation) – End-uses: Films/barriers for packaging (based on results of phase 1) Paper coatings (biosideaineet) Reinforcing chemicals (strength improvement chemicals) Fibre modification Products from selected extractives – Water chemicals from tannins – Technical products from tall oil (based on results of FuBio1) – Health-beneficial effects of polyphenol-rich extracts (GGM as prebiotic?) Salwe cooperation? Selected fibre modification techniques – Reactive milling/DAC – Active fibres – Moldable fibres & webs (incl. a PhD on plastization) 14 Steps forward / Role of workshop 7.10. • • • • • • • Idea generation Generate first draft (main objectives, WP structure and WP objectives) open commenting round Set main objectives, WP structure and WP objectives.
