insects. In the green house, you can observe many different kinds of

Shuki Taisai or the Grand Autumn Festival is held every 17th of
October. The main attraction in the Grand Autumn Festival is the
grand procession of men dressed in samurai costumes. It is a reenactment of the transfer of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s remains from Kuno-zan
Shrine to the Nikko Toshogu Shrine, in accordance with Ieyasu’s will.
The procession consists of one Omikoshi (a portable shrine) and a
procession of about 800 people. Led by the portable shrine, the samurai
procession, made up of cavalry, warriors carrying guns, others with
spears, archers with bows and arrows and so on, departs from the
Futarasan Shrine and heads for the Otabisho (a temporary resting place
for the portable shrine about 1 km away). It is interesting to observe
this procession as it gives you an insight into 17th Century Japan.

Located in Saitama Prefecture, the Nagatoro area is well known for
its river boating and the natural geological formations. The boat
ride takes you down the Arakawa River where you will marvel at the
naturally exposed rock formations from 80 million years ago. The
most well-known rock formations resemble laid out Japanese tatami
mats and are called the “Iwadatami.” After the boat ride, we will stop
to see the Iwadatami rock and break for lunch. After lunch, we will
take the ropeway to the small animal zoo at the top of Mt Hodo. The
zoo cares for a wide variety of small animals, including: monkeys,
rabbits, deer, goats, pigs, turtles and many others. You can purchase
food packs there if you would like to feed them yourself! Watching
monkeys on Monkey Mountain catch food is always exciting.

architecture). Spectators will be surprised by the sheer scale of the
many festival floats as they pass each other. The Kawagoe Festival’s
biggest highlight is the “Hikkawase,” when the floats meet at an
intersection, face one another and compete in traditional Japanesestyle music comprised of flutes, drums, and hand bells. Although the
competition has no winner, the exchange of festival music and wildly
moving lanterns is fantastic. This festival is designated as a National
Folk Cultural Property under the title of “Kawagoe Hikkawase
