Page 3 Life at St. Therese WELCOME to all who have joined with the Catholic Faith Community at St. Therese Parish as we gather and celebrate the Eucharist on the Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time! All of us at St. Therese Parish extend our welcome to those who are visiting from the local area and also those who are vacationing in southwest Florida. We welcome back our seasonal residents who have been away over the last several months! OPPORTUNTIES ABOUND! This Fall will bring many opportunities for personal, educational and spiritual growth. Already announced was the Lectio Divina spiritual journey – the experience of receiving Sacred Scripture as a Divine reading, a listening for the voice of God. Meetings will take place on Thursdays, from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM, beginning October 30. The group is limited to sixteen persons and will be facilitated by Bob and Alice Harmon. A special series of gatherings will be offered to those who are grieving following the death of a loved one. These bereavement group meetings will be led by Joe and Summer Allman. The day and time of an informational meeting will be announced very soon. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) will begin on Wednesday, October 29, from 3:30 – 5:00 PM. RCIA is for anyone who wishes to explore the Catholic Faith with a possibility of seeking baptism or full communion. Adults who are Catholic, but who have not yet received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend the RCIA meetings in preparation for Confirmation. These sessions will be led by Nelson Perez and an RCIA Team will be formed in the next few weeks. If you are interested in being part of the Team, please contact Nelson Perez. Also offered at St. Therese during the 201415 Season, will be An Adult Faith Enrichment series entitled Symbolon. The first ten sessions will focus on “knowing the Catholic Faith”, while the final ten will focus on “living the Catholic Faith.” The larger parish group setting will begin on Tuesday, November 18, from 1:00 – 2:30 PM. Currently being explored is the possibility of forming small neighborhood groups in various host homes where the Symbolon series can be viewed online with a discussion to follow. Nelson Perez will coordinate the Symbolon series. It is my hope that the above opportunities for growth along with the Scripture Reflections and Gospel Forum will assist all of us in our hunger to know the Lord and to recognize him in one another. Let’s keep growing!! BLESSINGS ALWAYS. Fr. Tom VETERAN’S DAY MASS The Council of Catholic Women and the Knights of Columbus invite everyone to the Annual Veteran’s Mass on Sunday, November 9th at 10:30 AM. That we might especially thank God for the service of special veterans in our families, all are asked to submit the veteran’s picture with his/her name written on the back. We will also include in our prayer those who are currently serving in the military – please submit a picture with the name and their relationship… daughter, son, etc. So that all photos might be properly returned, note the name, address and phone number of the person submitting the photo. Place all photos in the red/white/blue mailbox located in the main entrance of the church. Invite others to join us in prayer and offer a ride to someone unable to drive. A light reception will be served. Page 4 Parish News ALL SOULS MASS PARISH MEMBER? November is a special time to pray for all who have died. Although we will especially pray at the All Souls Weekend Masses (November 2), a remembrance for the dead will be made at every Mass celebrated at St. Therese during November. If you wish to have your loved ones remembered, you may make your request using the All Souls envelope found in your packet of parish offering envelopes (dated October 26, 2014) or at the church entrances. Prayer requests will be placed on the altar this All Souls Day and remain during the entire month of November. Given the number of requests for prayer and the difficulty encountered in correctly reading cursive writing, PLEASE CAREFULLY AND CLEARLY PRINT or submit a typed list of the names of those you wish remembered at Mass. A list of all printed or typed names only will be published in the November 2nd bulletin. To have the names of your deceased loved ones included in the bulletin listing, your request must be at the Parish Office no later than noon this Monday, October 20. Registering in a parish is a commitment to gather with a particular community and to both give and receive in a journey of faith. If you have been attending Mass at St. Therese Church, but have not yet registered in the parish, you are invited to do so. Stop by the Parish Office this week to register. Please do not wait until you have a specific need to make your commitment to worship at St. Therese. We look forward to welcoming you! ROSARY MAKING One of the special ministries of The Council of Catholic Women at St. Therese is making rosaries for the missions, patients at Hospice, sick of our parish, school children and the homeless. The ladies meet the second and fourth Thursdays of each month following the 9:00 AM Mass. All supplies are provided as well as instructions. This is a great opportunity to meet new people and make new friends while at the same time sharing a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Over the last few years, several thousand rosaries have been made and distributed. If you have any questions, please contact Peggy Nist at 567-1613. SUNDAY SCRIPTURE REFLECTION The Sunday Scripture Reflection group meets on Mondays, from 1:00 – 2:00 PM in the conference room at St. Therese. This gathering, which is led by Deacon Larry Schaupp, is for anyone, both women and men, who wish to come together with others from St. Therese Parish, familiarize themselves with the readings for the following Sunday and share a reflection. There is no fee and the only text needed will be the Bible. GOSPEL FORUM The Gospel Forum is a weekly gathering of men who desire to develop a deeper relationship with Christ. It is led by a lay person and is geared towards creating an environment that assists laymen connect to Christ, the Church and one another. The format is a one hour meeting where participants reflect on the upcoming Sunday’s gospel, pray together, and relate to each other as men and brothers in Christ. The Gospel Forum meets in the conference room at St. Therese on Wednesdays, from 10:15 – 11:15 AM. If you wish to discuss the possibility of joining this group of men, please contact Joe Lancellot at 239-5438056. Page 5 Parish & Diocesan News MOURNING A LOVED ONE LECTIO DIVINA (DIVINE READING) When someone we love dies, it hurts. The pain never really disappears, but we find ways to understand it and still live on. None of us need to face the pain alone. There are many who care and who are willing to journey with us as we discover how to live on without the ones we love. St. Therese Parish has offered bereavement support over the last many years and that support will continue. A series of group meetings, led by Summer and Joe Allman, will begin later this fall at St. Therese. An announcement of an informational meeting will be made in the near future. The experience of entering Sacred Scripture and receiving it as a Divine Reading (Lectio Divina) is not a study of Scripture, but a listening for the voice of God. During this 2014-15 Fall/Winter/Spring Season, we will be offering an opportunity to enter into Divine Reading through a program entitled: “Walking Toward Eternity: Daring to Walk the Walk”. The group, limited to 16 persons, will meet for eight (two hour) sessions. Participants will be asked to cover the $20 cost of a journal. Alice and Bob Harmon will be the facilitators. Meetings will take place on Thursdays, from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM, beginning October 30. If you are interested in participating, please call the parish office. BECOMING A CATHOLIC Persons wishing to explore the possibility of becoming a member of the Catholic Church participate in a time of formation and education – commonly known as RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). The RCIA meetings begin in the fall of the year and continue until the weeks after Easter. A RCIA program will be offered at St. Therese Parish during the 2014-15 Season. Anyone who may be interested is asked to contact Nelson Perez to become more familiar with the RCIA journey. TELEVISED MASS Two Sunday Masses – November 9 (Feast of the Dedication of the St. John Lateran Basilica in Rome) and November 23 (Feast of Christ the King) – will be recorded at St. Therese Church on October 28 beginning at 11:00 AM. Each Mass will then be televised on the appropriate Sunday morning. It is important that we have a large group at the taping so as to have good participation! The details will be announced as the day draws nearer. But, mark your calendar and plan to gather and pray! VINCENT DE PAUL OFFERINGS Envelopes to make an offering to assist the St. Vincent de Paul Society in their outreach to the poor of our area are available in the main entrance of the church. All are encouraged to continue supporting the ministry of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. SUNDAY TELEVISED MASS The TV Mass for the homebound is televised at 10:00 AM on FOX4 (WFTX). If more convenient, you may view a video of the Mass on the Diocesan website – http:// dioceseofvenice.org. CHOIR REHEARSAL Rehearsal for the Adult Choir at St. Therese Church is on Tuesdays, from 3:00 – 5:00 PM in the church. If you wish to join, please call Marge Wolf at 239-9102868. The choir sings at the 8:45 a.m. Sunday Mass, and from time to time at Masses on special feasts. Page 6 PRAY FOR THE SICK October 20th †Deceased - October 26th * Living 20 9:00 AM † JOSEPH F. Protect our military personnel. Be their constant companion and their strength in battle, their refuge in every adversity. Guide them, O Lord, that they may return home in safety. Amen. THE FUNERAL MASS An emerging trend is to have a service at a funeral home or at a facility in a gated community instead of a Funeral Mass in the church. This decision is often based on convenience and without the realization that the Funeral Mass is part of the Ritual Prayer celebrated by Catholics for one who has died. Celebrating the Eucharist for those we love expresses our deepest ties and relationships. FLOWER MEMORIALS If you wish to make a fresh flower memorial donation to be placed in front of the altar on a particular weekend, please contact the parish office. The cost is $65 for a live flower arrangement. THANK YOU to all who have made memorial requests and who have made it possible to enhance the worship space at St. Therese with fresh flowers!
