www.whirlandtwirl.org Caller:Whit Brown October 2014 Cuer: Dick Nordine Guest Caller: President's Message There is much to look forward to in the coming weeks and months. Of particular note, whether you dance mainstream or plus and you have not yet purchased your ribbons for the upcoming Tony Oxendine dance with Jimmy & Carol Griffin cueing rounds, you should do so now. That is a dance not to be missed! There is also the extra added bonus of the craft sale silent auction that night. After that we will be holding our Halloween dances on October 29 and 31, so start planning your costumes. And don’t miss BINGO on November 1! Tony Oxendine Mainstream Dance Guest Cuers: Jimmy & Carol Griffin Oct 12th 7:30 - 10pm $9 per person adv $11 per person @ door On a more somber note, a few weeks ago a dance had to end about 15 minutes early because we did not have enough dancers to complete even one square … that was a first in our experience and another reminder that we must be diligent in our recruiting efforts. Our most recent attempt to hold a class failed – we could not run a class for just one couple. Also, we are still hearing that some of our more experienced members have not been treating our newer dancers as graciously as they should. Some new members have begun to feel unwelcome and have stopped coming. Our club is shrinking, and we MUST welcome all our dancers. REMEMBER, helping new dancers is part of square dancing. Dancing with newer dancers will help them to improve their dancing skills. PLEASE be friendly and patient. Square dancing is a circle of friends! Costume Contests & Dances October 29th & 31st Prizes! Fun! Prizes! Mainstream Wed 29th Plus Friday 31st There are plenty of people who would love to join us if we could just reach them. And that is the rub – how do we find potential dancers? Then, after we find them, how do we “make the sale?” How I wish we could answer these questions. In any case, it is vital that we take an optimistic view and try, try again! We could follow the lead of other large social clubs – The Soho House (NYC) has a waiting list of over 3,000 people with a current membership of over 5,000 – dues run $1,000 a year and up … but that fee structure may not work for Whirl & Twirl. Forgive our making light of a serious situation and let us take heart cool weather has rolled in and we have seen a resurgence on the dance floor. We do not expect to see extremely light turnouts again anytime soon … and if we can find the magic bullet, we will remain viable for many years to come. To some degree our fate is in our hands – let us all do what we can! Let’s dance! Michael and Alice Mark These Dates! The town is small in area as well, only 1.3 square miles, and it is less than 20 miles north of the Tennessee border. His parent’s both worked very hard; George’s dad was a gypsum miner and his mother raised seven children – one girl and six boys. Unfortunately, only one of his siblings remains, a younger brother living in Roanoke, Virginia. George moved to Florida in 1965, but before that he moved around a bit over the years. He has lived in Las Vegas, Nevada, Atlanta, Georgia, Mobile, Alabama, and, of course, Winter Springs, Florida. He had two children, both girls; his younger daughter has passed away but his older daughter lives in Stuart, Florida. George once owned a saloon in Mobile, Alabama, was a handyman in Atlanta, a mobile home dealer in Las Vegas, and sold health insurance in Florida. But for the last 20 years he has had his own handyman business based in Seminole County. Eddie & Joyce Julian Vice President Bob & Ginny Osborne Secretary Bruce & Debbie Popson Treasurer Tim & Judy Olson Building Director Open Special Events Director Rick & Gail Morris Ways & Means Renzie Davidson & Virginia Barnes Tenderfoot Vice President Ian & Sandy Ogilvie Tenderfoot Director It was Dick Wilson who introduced George to square dancing. Once he started he was serious – he took lessons at six different clubs at the same time! He, of course, graduated with each of those six classes! George met Sabine Hermening at the Orlando Singles and they have been dancing together for eight years! With an active business and so much dancing George does not have a lot of free time, but when he has a moment he enjoys watching classic comedy reruns! 2014-2015 Committees Jack & Mel Frye Newsletter Publisher Connie Moore & Ellen Bell Sunshine Ted & Mary Lou Heyob Publicity Eddie & Joyce Julian Blue Bandits Michael & Alice Craft Photographer/Historian Tim & Judy Olson Decorations Bob & Ginny Osborne Long Range Planning Bob & Ginny Osborne Travel Ian & Sandy Ogilvie Website Whit Brown Slideshows Judy Walker & Nancylayne Wolking ReCycle Sale Don’t forget to check out Whirl and Twirl Square Dance Club on Facebook! “Serving with a noble grace” October 2014 Sun Mon Tue Wed 1 Thu 2 3 Workshop 7:30pm Mainstream Dance 5 6 7 Round Dance Class 7-9pm Workshop 9-10pm 12 Tony Oxendine Dance 19 26 13 14 10 Board Meeting 7 pm 16 Workshop 7:30pm Mainstream Dance 20 21 Round Dance Class 7-9pm Workshop 9-10pm Round Dance Class 7-9pm Workshop 9-10pm 15 28 22 Workshop 7:30pm Mainstream Dance 29 Workshop 7:30pm Mainstream Dance Halloween Dance Sat 4 Plus Dance 7:30 - 10pm Club Colors 9 Workshop 7:30pm Mainstream Dance Round Dance Class 7-9pm Workshop 9-10pm 27 8 Fri 11 Plus Dance 7:30 - 10pm 17 18 Plus Dance 7:30 - 10pm 23 24 Plus Dance 7:30 - 10pm 30 31 Plus Dance 7:30 - 10pm Halloween Dance 25
