October: Respect Life Month
Nearly twenty years ago, Pope St. John Paul II wrote an encyclical letter entitled The Gospel of
Life. I believe it Evangelium Vitae to be one of the most important document of his 25+ year papacy.
During this week and next, I want to share with you some of what the Pope said there. Let us all pray
persistently for the triumph of a culture of life in our time.
Chapter 1: The Voice of Your Brother’s Blood Cries to Me From the Ground
“CainroseupagainsthisbrotherAbel,andkilledhim”(Gen4:8):therootsofviolenceagainstlife
“God did not make death, and he does not delight in the death of the living. For he has created all
thing that they might exist… Godcreatedmanforincorruption, and made him in the image of his own
eternity, but through the devil’s envydeathenteredtheworld, and those who belong to his party experience it” (Wis 1:13-14; 2:23-24).
The Gospel of life, proclaimed in the beginning when man was created in the image of God for a
destiny of full and perfect life (cf. Gen 2:7, Wis 9:2-3), is contradicted by the painful experience of death
whichenterstheworld and casts its shadow of meaninglessness over man’s entire existence. Death came
into the world as a result of the Devil’s envy (cf. Gen 3:1, 4-5) and the sin of our irst parents (cf. Gen
2:17, 3:17-19). And death entered it in a violent way, throughthekillingofAbelbyhisbrotherCain:
“And when they were in the ield, Can rose up against his brother Abel, and killed him” (Gen 4:8).
The irst murder is presented with singular eloquence in a page of the Book of Genesis which has
universal signi icance: it is a page rewritten daily, with inexorable and degrading frequency, in the book
of human history….
Brotherkillsbrother. Like the first fratricide, every murder is a violation of the “spiritual”kinship
uniting mankind in one great family, in which all share the same fundamental good: equal personal dignity. Not infrequently the kinship“offleshandblood” is also violated: for example when threats to life
arise within the relationship between parents and children, such as happens in abortion or when, in the
wider context of family or kinship, euthanasia is encouraged or practiced.
At the root of every act of violence against one’s neighbor there is aconcessiontothethinkingof
theevilone, theonewho “was murderer from the beginning “ (Jn 8:44). As the Apostle John reminds us:
“For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, and
not be like Cain who was of the evil one and murdered his brother” (1 Jn 3:11-12). Cain’s killing of his
brother at the very dawn of history is thus a sad witness of how evil spreads with amazing speed: man’s
revolt against God in the earthly paradise is followed by the deadly combat of man against man.
“Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me (Mt 25:40).
Fr. Frank

Table Decorating Contest—Choose your

On October 22, we celebrate one of our newest and famous saints--St. John Paul II. Karol Joseph Wojtyla was
born in Poland in 1920. Young Karol had to endure many
hardships. His mother died in 1929, when he was only 9
years old. His brother, Edmund, was a doctor and died of
scarlet fever in 1932. His father died in 1941. Karol was
all alone. His country of Poland was invaded by the Nazi's
during World War II and even the universities were
closed. He was forced to work and continue his studies in "underground"
schools. This means his education was done in secret. He loved sports,
poetry and acting. He took the name John Paul II when he was elected as
Pope of the Catholic Church in 1978. He was well loved all over the world
for his continued efforts to speak up for human rights and to see each human (even the unborn) as an individual not has an object. He traveled
over 698,000 miles as Pope, and created diplomatic relations with many
countries. The youth of the world remember him especially for starting
the World Youth Day held every year. St. John Paul II clearly sent a message of love of God and love of neighbor throughout the world. This one
man made a huge difference all over the world. God prepared him for his
mission in the world. What is God preparing for you to accomplish?
In today’s Gospel we hear proclaimed a profound teaching by Jesus on
stewardship. What belongs to Caesar? What belongs to God? Christian
stewards recognize that everything they have belongs to God. God created
them, and God has claims on every part of their existence. They also realize that the sovereign is an institution whose nature and purpose is to
promote the common good and protect the welfare of its citizenry. As
long as it accomplishes this mission while treating every single person
with deep respect, justice and compassion, it merits the steward’s support and cooperation. Christian stewards know what belongs to the Lord,
and they are better citizens when they live their lives according to His
Gospel. Intermission Games and 50/50 Raffle

Recently you received a letter from Bishop Gaydos asking for your
generous support of the Catholic Stewardship Appeal. The 2015 universal theme – “Seek the Lord, while He may be found” reminds us that in
everything we do, it is our calling to act in a manner that imitates the
Lord’s love and mercy. Please give prayerful consideration to how you
can respond, complete your pledge card and return it to the diocesan
Stewardship Of ice in the envelope provided.
