Aust-wide expansion of specialist
industrial cable to meet your needs
V
astly improved supplies of cable for
offshore and onshore hazardous area
sites are now available in Australia.
The improvement is the result of JT Day
recently expanding its stock of cable so that
product is readily available from our Perth and
Brisbane offices.
Essentially we’ve looked at the markets from
an offshore and onshore perspective, and
strategically positioned the stock to maximise
support for client needs.
Our Perth office, given the number of offshore
facilities operating in the Carnarvon, Browse
and Bonaparte basins provides support for
these oil and gas installations, some of which
are still in construction, due to come on
stream within the next 24 months.
Special consideration has
been given to the typical cable
construction and compounds used
for these facilities.
For instance, material selection for the cable
construction has taken into account the need
for cables to be halogen-free. This eliminates
the potential for halogens such as Chlorine to
be present should the cables be affected or
compromised by extreme heat.
In an offshore environment asset owners
typically specify material for cable sheathing
as prescribed in IEC 60092 part 359. This
standard covers electrical installations in ships
and has been adopted by most offshore asset
operators with manned operations.
Flame retardant, low smoke and halogen-free
compounds are utilised for sheathing such
as SHF2 which is essentially a halogen free
elastomeric or thermosetting polyethylene
rubber.
Our Perth facility has an expanded range of
shipboard style cables which also comply with
AS/NZS5000.1&3 and AS/NZS3000-2007.
Short cable lengths
Short cable lengths are held in stock to support
module and skid builders supplying equipment
onto these projects and for service providers
working on existing assets.
Having short lengths available avoids
being subjected to manufacturer’s minimum
quantity orders.
Additionally, there’s a full range of Ex and
industrial cable glands and accessories in
stock to support all cable types.
On shore cables
Our Brisbane facility has an expanded stock
of onshore style industrial cables, given the
number of onshore LNG projects on Curtis
Island for example and the volume of onshore
gas gathering facilities and the general lack
of offshore infrastructure off the East coast
(excluding the Bass & Otway Basins).
The cables stocked are typically power,
control and instrumentation and all are
standard with steel wire armour for
mechanical protection.
Instrumentation cables now in stock
We have recently received the first
consignment of instrumentation cables
into our Brisbane warehouse and have
standardised on a niche construction.
We stock screened and individual screened
for those stringent
applications.
Firstly, we have chosen to utilise XLPE
insulation for all cable conductors across all
sizes, including power cables because of the
superior characteristics XLPE has over PVC.
In addition, to standard
black sheath cables,
we also have blue
outer sheath for those
intrinsically safe circuits.
Secondly, the instrumentation cable
voltage range is 450/750V to cover most
applications.

LPI and JT Day join forces to
support National Broadband
Network expansion
Broadband services are delivered using a
range of technologies across the country to
homes and businesses, principally via digital
subscriber line (xDSL) technology over the
copper access network, 3G and 4G mobile
networks, the hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC)
networks, fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) networks
and fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) networks.
Satellite networks
In addition to terrestrial networks all
Australian premises are covered by satellite
broadband networks.
A
s the Telco majors such as NBN
Co, Telstra Mobile, Optus and
Vodafone work towards improving
and expanding coverage across
regional Australia, Lightning Protection
International (LPI) and JT Day are
providing a full range of earthing and
bonding equipment and in some instances
direct strike lightning protection products
to the contracting groups.
JT Day and LPI have supplied NBN
contractors throughout Queensland with a
full range of NBN approved below-ground
mechanical clamps and above ground earth
bars.
All mechanical clamps are purpose designed
to provide a conductive and mechanically
secure connection, between earth rods

also a full range of industrial glands for safe
areas.
JT Day in conjunction with our UK based group
company member, Noskab, provides access
to a large number of cable manufacturers
worldwide.
This presence allows us to source and give
necessary support for cables made to a wide

major telecommunications project currently
underway across Australia.
This project involves the upgrade and or
installation of new infrastructure across
thousands of sites country wide. It will
ultimately see the commissioning and
integration of 4G network technology.
As this project has gained momentum, JT
Day and LPI have serviced key conttactors
throughout Queensland with a customised
range of Optus and Vodafone products
covering earth bars and accessories,
feeder earth kits, long palm lugs and earth
enhancing compounds.
JT Day’s Brisbane based facility carries a
comprehensive range of NBN approved
earthing, bonding and accessories to support
all of the local and regional contracting
groups.
ISO14001 - Our Commitment
T
he MacLean Electrical Group, of which JT Day is the Australian Division has
begun the accreditation process for the ISO14001 Environment Management
standard.
As an enhancement to the Companies’ ISO9001 Quality Assurance standard, ISO14001
will provide us with the tools to identify and control our environment and the platform to
evolve our environmental performance.
JT Day recognises the range of economic and ethical benefits both for the Company
and also its customers. These include a streamlining of its operations and a greater
sense of awareness and pride, both inside and outside of the organisation and also with
its employees.
As an example, the new laser engraving equipment to be installed in the junction box
assembly workshop will be fitted with a highly specified dust extraction and purification
system to meet the exacting ISO14001 standard.
Our customers can rely on a continuous improvement in our quality and environmental
practices to internationally recognised ISO standards.

Weidmuller gives OK for local assembly work
J
T Day’s junction box assembly
facility that was recently doubled
in capacity to handle the
increasing demand for customised
junction boxes has recently been
approved for the assembly of
Weidmuiller’s junction boxes.
The approval to assemble locally is a
bonus for projects being undertaken in
W.A. as it means customer requests can
now be expedited much faster.
Prior to the recent approval, assembly
work on Weidmuller junction boxes had
to be conducted in the Eastern States.
JT Day, General Manager, Brian Prutny
said the demand for the company’s
junction box assembly facility had been
considerable.
It has led to staff member, Darren Page
moving into a dedicated junction box
estimators role to give specialist advice
and support to clients.
The workshop facility is handling Ex e
and Industrial rated GRP and stainless
steel products. All fit-out, drilling, tapping
and installation of terminal assemblies
is carried out in house to provide an
assembly service that meets the Lloyds
Register ISO 9001:2010 quality program
and under the tight control of IEC EX
certification for hazardous areas.
Introducing the right tool for stripping
of cables with hard complex insulation
T
he difficult task of stripping cables
with hard, complex insulation has
been made a whole lot easier with
the latest range of tools from Weidmuller.
The Stripax Ultimate will strip halogen-free
and UL cables in one easy step to make the
process far from the tortuous process that it
once was.
The beauty of this fabulous tool is that after
doing the job it automatically opens the
clamping jaws, it has selectable adjustment
for partial stripping and it can be adjusted
according to insulation thicknesses.

JT Day Queensland has recently appointed
its sixth staff member in Phil Seboa as
technical Sales Officer.Phil has recently
moved to Queensland from the United
Kingdom where he worked in similar
products.
Weidmuller professional stripping tools
have an optimised ergonomic design and
guarantee defect-free processing with a
consistently reliable stripping result thanks to
exact matching of the insulation and the wire
cross-section.
Jenny Bott has joined JT Day Perth as
