Kia ora koutou
It has been great to see in the Grey Star and hear on radio
about one of our former students, Janna Sullivan, who has
experienced success in life, in part due to her time here at
Greymouth High School. There are many examples of our
former students who have excelled, achieved and who are
contributing to society here or away. Why is that important
right now? Our students need to feel confident that they
can take on the world from their experiences here at
Greymouth High School. Proudly prepared to drive our
future. Of course this takes hard work and resilience, one
of our school’s core values. Right now, all of our students
need to be focussed and working harder than ever.
I’ve seen great contributions from our junior students at
both our Pumanawa hui and Student Council, as well as in
classes I’ve observed recently. Such key competencies are a
very valuable part of school learning.
If you contributed to our survey on 2014 and 2015, thank
you very much. We had a great return and a summary of
the findings is provided in this newsletter. We are now
using this to inform the development of next year’s annual
plan.

Correspondence School Achievement
Pictured right is Year 12 Home Economics student
Savannah Hartigan, with her vegetarian burger which she
made for Ms Seyb. This was an assessment that
Savannah had to complete as part of her Correspondence
School assignment work. This was beautifully presented
with a lovely fresh side salad. A great effort Savannah.
School News
Assisted Learning Department - Building Projects
Students supported by the Assisted Learning department
have been hit with the Pinterest bug. If you go there you
will never have free time again. We have been working on
pellet projects throughout the year. This has required some
Google searching for the best deals for our tools. Once the

purchasing was done with the help from Mitre 10 Mega,
students set to work with projects. We have pulled apart
pellets to reconfigure for our purposes. This term we are
making scarecrows. At this time we would love to take any
donations of old clothing (hats of any description, braces,
pants, shirts, buttons, pillow cases to make faces) anything
we may be able to use as stuffing, including plastic bags,
and any springs that we may be able to use to give the
head a bit of movement.

Scholarships
Dennis Moore Scholarship 2015
To assist resident West Coast people to undertake secondary or tertiary education outside the
West Coast region, promote life skills programmes in schools and provide for the training youth
leaders/teachers. Priority will be given to applicants who are successful in their studies and those
who are financially disadvantaged. Applications close Friday 7th November. Application forms are
available from Jo Russell.
Evelyn Cooper Scholarship
The purpose of the Scholarship is to assist young people attending Greymouth High School
studying at Year 13 level to attend a University or Tertiary Institute within New Zealand.
Applications are available from Jo Russell and must be lodged with her by 2pm Friday 31 st
October 2014.

2014-15 Survey – Feedback Summary




Responses were up on last year but lower from students. We will follow up with
student focus groups this term.
What were the ratings? Our ratings improved on last year in all aspects.
The biggest gains were in: ‘clear expectations’, ‘offering good advice and support’
and ‘communication’.
All could improve further and notably: ‘making learning interesting’, rewarding
good behaviours’, ‘organisation’ and ‘resources’.
Overall Summary messages
 Meeting the needs of all learners: most able, high expectations for all
 Consistency: Weekly Notes, rewards, relationships
 Increase community involvement (student learning, school visibility)
 Continue to improve ICT
The information gathered will help us to develop the Strategic Plan outline for 2015, our
self-review, the Annual Plan for 2015, staff development, student input, department
plans and department self-review.
