Mormillo At an event like the Planes of Fame Airshow at Chino, California over the weekend of May 3-4, 2014, who are the real stars, the pilots or the planes? Many of the pilots at the show are well-known around the world. Planes of Fame Air Museum president and renowned movie pilot Steve Hinton is probably the most famous warbird pilot in the world; he flew no less than five times each day in three different warbirds. With more than 50,000 flying hours logged to date, Clay Lacy, who performed a great display at the show in a Learjet 24, is also known around the world for his recordsetting flying ventures and pioneering aerial cinematography. When it comes to general aerobatic flying, it would be hard to find anyone more famous than Sean D. Tucker who performed at the show in the Team Oracle Challenger III biplane. Though known primarily on the west coast of the United States, Rob “Tumbling Bear” Harrison, who flew his wife’s Zlin 142C, and John Collver, who performed in his SNJ-5 Texan “War Dog”, have also built up quite a following. Of course, the world’s only warbird formation aerobatic team, the Bremont Horsemen, with Steve Hinton leading Dan Friedkin and Ed Shipley in P-51D Mustangs and also in F-86F Sabre jets, are also known internationally. Billed as “A Salute to the Mighty Eighth,” highlighting the contributions of the United States Army Air Forces’ 8th Air Force to the defeat of Nazi Germany in WWII, the Planes Where Aviation History Lives! of Fame show attracted warbirds representing the types of aircraft flown by that group in the war. There were eleven P-51 Mustangs, A special treat for this years Airshow - the USAF F-22 Raptor performs demo flights & heritage flights with a P-47 Thunderbolt, P-38 Lightning & P-51 Mustang. four P-47 Thunderbolts, a pair of B-17G Flying Fortresses and a P-38J Lightning in the sky over Chino that weekend. Other WWII European Theater aircraft highlighted included a trio of C-47/C-53 Skytrain/Skytrooper transports, a Spitfire Mk. XIV and a FockeWulf Fw 190A-8/N. A Pilatus P-2 and a P-63 Kingcobra were also included in the mix. However, there was quite a bit more to the show than 8th Air Force operations reenactments. Besides aerobatic displays, a flight demonstration of the Planes of Fame Air Museum’s world’s only Northrop N9M-B flying wing and the Lucas Oil Jet Car, the show featured scenarios highlighting air combat action in the Pacific during World War II, Korean Air War re-enactments, complete with pyrotechnics, and even a touch of today’s military air power from a USAF 325th FW F-22A Raptor. Raptor Demo Team pilot Capt. John “Taboo” Cummings performed a full display routine with the Raptor and then flew it together with Steve Hinton in the Comanche Fighters P-47G Thunderbolt “Snafu,” Kevin Eldridge in the Planes of Fame Air Museum’s P-38J Lightning “23 Skidoo” and Dan Friedkin in the Comanche Fighters P-51D Mustang “February” for an Air Force Heritage Flight display. Among the numerous warbirds in the Pacific Theater air combat re-enactments were three B-25J Mitchell bombers, an A6M3 Zero and a “Tora! Tora! Tora!” movie Val dive bomber replica. The Korean Air War scenario included a dramatic dogfight re-enactment featuring an F-86F Sabre, a MiG-15 and a T-33A Shooting Star from the Planes of Fame collection. All in all, the 2014 Planes of Fame Airshow was an outstanding production that brought together a remarkable selection of rare aircraft at the hands of very skilled pilots over a weekend that saw the show played out against a nice blue sky on a rather warm weekend. www.planesoffame.org Page 2 2014 PoF AIRSHOW HIGHLIGHTS Planes of Fame Air Museum President’s Message Hackworth showed the unique N9M Flying Wing’s classic lines as he made fly bys around the airport. Tucker in the Team Oracle Challenger performing the triple ribbon-cut. The Planes of Fame Airshow 2014 “Salute to the Mighty Eighth” sponsored by Mooney International is now in the books. The 26th Annual air show was a very successful event. We had more than 50 flying warbirds perform during the 3 days. More than 40,000 spectators attended. The week leading into the air show was truly epic. Chino airport experienced the wrath of the mighty Santa Ana winds blowing from the north at speeds approaching 70 MPH. The winds started blowing Monday morning prior to the show, and brought very high temperatures as well as dirt and sand drifts. We were unable to perform any of our air show set up. Everything from setting fences lines, parking aircraft, erecting tents and organizing vendors was on hold. These set up jobs usually begin on the Monday before the show, so needless to say we all were concerned that the set up might not be completed in time if the winds kept up. As it all turned out, the winds died down on Thursday afternoon and our volunteers jumped in and had the entire airport set up by midnight in spite of very high temperatures and dirty dry weather. Thursday late afternoon many of our invited aircraft arrived and were put in place, the major clean up was underway way and continued till the wee hours of the morning. We had 3 separate aircraft cleanup crews washing aircraft, one after the other, to meet our schedules. Several of the aircraft were just coming out of annual inspections and required test hops as well. All our staff and volunteers met the challenge. By Friday afternoon we were caught up and back on schedule. The show site was ready and we flew our practice sessions on schedule. Saturday’s weather was hot as expected and we opened the show at 11:00 am. Many of the legendary warbirds that represented the United States Army Air Corps Mighty 8thy Air Force in England were displayed: C47’s, P-38, P-47’s and P-51’s. This display was followed by Rob Harrison flying his new Zlin routine. Ron The famous aircraft of the Pacific theatre in WW2 flew next in tight fly-by patterns and formations only seen here at Planes of Fame. One of the most popular Warbird displays anywhere in the world flew next, The Bremont Horsemen, flying P-51 Mustangs in a formation aerobatic display (one of my personal favorites, of course, because I am flying one of them.) After a short intermission Planes of Fame reenacted a Korean War battle with air support including F-86 and MiG-15 tail chase. This scenario featured explosions and radio com to bring the battle to the audience, very exciting to watch. The show continued with Sean D. Tucker flying his Oracle Challanger III. Sean always puts on a world class aerobatic display that leaves us speechless. The United States Air Force brought the F-22 Raptor, the world’s most advanced fighter, to our show. In an incredible and amazing display of brute power and grace, it is able to fly at a hover and at high speed all within the confines of the airport. It is truly an airplane that defies what we all perceive as normal flight. The F-22 demo was capped off with the Air Force Heritage Flight featuring the P-38, P-51, P-47 and F-22 aircraft. The show is a “capture history with your camera” event. Two B-17’s and a flight of four P-47’s made their appearance at the show right after the Raptor. This too is so unique, to see these rare aircraft in the same sky at the same airport. Clay Lacy followed flying his Lear Jet in a display of aerobatic flight. Clay is also a crowd favorite and we always enjoy his unique, graceful flying. The show was capped off with my all time favorite, three F-86 Sabre jets, flown in another formation aerobatic display by The Bremont Horsemen. The Bremont Horsemen in F-86 Sabres are truly a sight to see, especially from my seat as lead Horsemen. On behalf of Planes of Fame, our most sincere thanks go to our sponsors, performers, volunteers and staff for all their hard work and dedication to help Planes of Fame once again produce the best showing of warbirds and performing aircraft anywhere in the world today. Mark your calendars for next year’s show May 2 and 3, 2015. It will be another great event! Keep ‘em flying!
