When Pope Francis puts a cardinal in charge of
something, the choice is typically an outsider. His
most important appointment so far, either lay or
religious, is Cardinal George Pell, an Australian
whom he recruited from the archdiocese of
Holy Spirit Church
Harriett Street, Auchenflower
Sydney. Pell now heads the newly formed
Secretariat for the Economy, and Pope Francis
has granted Pell power over finances that no official has remotely
held before. He is responsible for setting and enforcing all
budgets and managing all investments. The son of a heavyweight
boxer, Pell, 73, is an imposing figure who is short on niceties and
brutally frank about the necessity to radically pare costs.
Pope Francis has a complex but pragmatic view of money.
“Money is useful to carry out many things, for works to support
humanity”, he has said. “But when your heart is attached to it, it
destroys you.” His humble lifestyle follows those precepts. He
resides in a oneone-bedroom, secondsecond-floor suite in Casa Santa Marta
overlooking the entrance. (Benedict, the former pope, lives nearby
in a converted monastery called Mater Ecclesiae and occasionally
sends Francis notes with feedback on his interviews.) Visitors say
the Pope’s lights go on at 4.30am. He’s frequently spotted in the
buffet line, tray in hand, at the Santa Marta dining room, where
the cuisine isn’t fancy—
fancy—it offers a choice of two main courses for
lunch and dinner, and features Italian specialties such as pasta
con pomodoro and pollo arrosto. He takes no holidays, explaining
that if the poor can’t take vacations, why should he?

Blue Knot Day—Monday 27 October. ADULT SURVIVING CHILD ABUSE (ASCA) is the name of a support group who
have come to prominence during the McClellan Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual
Abuse. At their initiative Monday 27 October has been declared “Blue Knot Day” as a way of raising national awareness in solidarity with the many adult survivors of childhood trauma. Francis Sullivan, CEO of the Truth Justice and
Healing Council which is interacting with the Royal Commission directly on behalf of the Church, has called on all
Catholic organisations around Australia to take part in Blue Knot Day 2014. “This is a chance for Catholic parishes,
congregations, social services, health, and education organisations across Australia to show their support for survivors of child sexual abuse,” Mr Sullivan said. “This is not just about abuse that happened in the Catholic Church but
about abuse that has happened anywhere. As a caring community, Blue Knot Day, gives Catholics the perfect opportunity to make a very clear statement that we are responsible for ensuring the crimes and cover-ups of the past never
happen again and that survivors are treated with justice and compassion,” Mr Sullivan said.
Whilst Blue Knot day is officially on the Monday, other activities will be held in the week stretching from 27 October to
2 November. ASCA President, Dr Cathy Kezelman, said the significance of this year’s Blue Knot Day is growing as
the issue of child sexual abuse has never been more prominent. “In the past few years, cases once hidden have finally come to light. We need to make sure that everyone knows recovery is possible and there are people who can help,”
Dr Kezelman said. This year Blue Knot Day will focus its attention on the education and training urgently needed for

OPEN THE CHURCH UPDATE A BIG thank you to the many people who have
volunteered to be Watchers, following my recent appeal. We now have enough
Watchers (and reserves) to be able to continue to keep St Ignatius Church open
one afternoon per month for private devotions, namely last Friday of the month,
from 2pm through to 5.30pm Mass—next on is on Friday 31st October, followed by
28 Nov. which will be the last for the year (not opening in Dec. due to the holiday
season). NB. We do not Open the Church for the sole benefit of the Watchers—
anyone is welcome to come for as short or long a time as suits—no structured
prayer, no formalities—it’s your quiet time with the Lord. ~Betty Andrews 3870 8867
