# 572 10-26-2014/ pub./ P. 2
Dear parishioners,
[This is being written on Sunday, October 19, as I will be on vacation during the week of October 20.]
Last Saturday, October 18, I returned from vacation to concelebrate a funeral Mass in St. Peter Church (Riverside),
for a parishioner of the former St. Peter Parish, of which I was the administrator from August 2006 to January 4, 2008 (when a
new priest came in to prepare it and St. Joseph Parish, Beverly, for their merger on July 1, 2008, as the new Jesus the Good
Shepherd Parish). The following morning, I celebrated the 7:30 Mass in St. Raphael Church, because I was not able to find a
priest to say that Mass.
This Friday, October 31, is the eve (vigil) of All Hallows, also known as All Hallows Eve (Halloween). The following day, November 1, is the feast of All Hallows, whose liturgical name is the Solemnity of All Saints. “Hallows” refers to
the holy ones, i.e., the saints in heaven. We use the word “hallowed” every time we say the Lord’s Prayer.
As you know, the Solemnity of All Saint is one of the six holy days of obligation celebrated by the Church in the
United States. Three of the six – the Ascension, the Nativity of the Lord (Christmas), and the Immaculate Conception (under
which title the Blessed Virgin Mary is our national patroness) – are celebrated as a holy day of obligation every year. The
other three – January 1 (Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God), August 15 (the Solemnity of the Assumption of the
Blessed Virgin Mary), and November 1 – are celebrated as obligatory holy days only when they fall on a Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday, Friday, or Sunday. When one of the latter three falls on a Saturday or Monday, the obligation is transferred to that
Sunday.
Even though attendance at Mass is not obligatory this Saturday, November 1, you may still voluntarily observe the
holy day by attending the vigil Mass on Friday, October 31, at the regular, 7 p.m. Mass (in St. Raphael Church) or by going to
Mass on the holy day, at either the regular 8 a.m. Saturday-morning Mass (in St. Raphael Church) or the 10:30 holy-day Mass
(in Holy Angels Church). (When a holyday of obligation falls on Saturday, we add a 10:30 Mass in Holy Angels Church.)
There are thirteen saints who were born in, ministered in, or were martyred in what is now the United States or
one of its commonwealths or territories. Three were born in and grew up in what is now the U.S.: Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Katharine Drexel, and St. Kateri (‘cat tur ree) Tekakwitha (tek ack ‘qwee tuh). One was born in a foreign country but
grew up in the U.S. (from age 1): St. Marianne Cope. One (a Filipino) was martyred in Guam (now a U.S. territory): St. Pedro
Calungsod (kuh ‘loong sud). The remaining eight were foreign missionaries. Five were from France: St. Isaac Jogues, St.
René Goupil, St. Jean de Lalande, St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, and St. (Mother) Théodore Guérin. Saint Frances Xavier
Cabrini was from Italy. Saint John Nepomucene Neumann (‘new min) was from Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). Saint
Damien de Veuster was from Belgium. All holy men and women, pray for us.
God bless you.

HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION
As you know, November 1 -- the Solemnity of All Saints — is one
of the six holy days of obligation celebrated by the Church in the United States. When January 1 (Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of
God), August 15 (the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed
Virgin Mary), and November 1 fall on a Saturday or Monday, however, the obligation is transferred to that Sunday.
Even though attendance at Mass is not obligatory on November 1

radically. All human beings have an innate ability to contemplate God’s Love
as it moves within and around them. Wild Dancing: Embraced by Untamed
Love, a book written by Janice Edwards, RSM, uses prayerful stories to
evoke your awareness of God’s sensitivity to you and your journey. Join us

The Gospel of John begins with an invitation Jesus gives to Andrew and the

they can teach us.

October is RESPECT LIFE MONTH “Each of Us Is a Masterpiece of God’s Creation”
“Pope Francis has captivated the world with his humility, warmth and
compassion for each person. Vivid accounts of his tenderness for “the
least of these”—the elderly, the imprisoned, those with disfiguring disabilities, the unborn, and many more—seize our attention. Why? At the
heart of each of these interactions is a truth which resonates in our
hearts, revealing to us something essential to understanding ourselves
and our purpose. We are loved.”
- Excerpt taken from the 2014 Respect for Life Month Statement,
Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley, OFM Cap., Chairman, USCCB Committee
on Pro-Life Activities.
Word of Life ~ October, 2014
“The credibility of a healthcare system is not measured solely by effi-
ciency, but above all the attention and love given to the person, whose
life is always sacred and inviolable.”
— Pope Francis, “Address of Holy Father Francis to Participants in the
Meeting Organized by the International Federation of Catholic Medical
Associations,” September 20, 2013. Life, Marriage and Religious Liberty

SRS PTA has boxes in each church narthex, and in the school hallway,
for Box Tops for Education, Campbell soup labels and Coca Cola
bottle caps. We earn money for box tops, and points for the labels
and caps. This enriches the students’ education. THANK YOU FOR
YOUR SUPPORT!
The Rosary, though clearly Marian in character, is at heart a
Christocentric prayer. In the sobriety of its elements, it has all the
depth of the Gospel message in its entirety, of which it can be
said to be a compendium. It is an echo of the prayer of Mary,
her perennial Magnificat for the work of the redemptive Incarnation which began in her virginal womb. With the Rosary, the
Christian people sits at the school of Mary and is led to contemplate the beauty on the face of Christ and to experience the
depths of his love. Through the Rosary the faithful receive abundant grace, as though from the very hands of the Mother of the
Redeemer.

WE ARE IN DIRE NEED OF FOOD
There were 142 families who received food at our last Reach Out
Saturday (October 11). As the month of October grows to a close,
many families are starting to run out of food and cannot purchase food
because of their other bills (utilities, mortgages, rents, etc.). We expect
many more families lining up for our (3) three bags of food.
Our order list of foods from Mercer Street Friends used to contain as
many as 30+ items that we could purchase as we needed them. However, the latest order list only had 8 items to purchase. Even the quantity for each item has been reduced. So, once again we are depending
on our parishioners to drop off an item of food when coming to Mass or
anytime by calling 609-585-3848.—Please, do not let the poor and hungry families down!
Monetary donations are always welcomed. God will bless you for
helping the hungry families.
Just a reminder, Thanksgiving is coming soon!

COMMUNION AT MASS
FOR THE DISABLED
NURSING HOME
Tuesday, November 11. 6:15 - 8:00 pm. Another November means our ministry will once again sponsor a Sweater Bingo for the nursing home residents. If
you have any new or gently used sweaters and sweatshirts which you no longer
want, we would love to have them for our special prizes this month. Volunteers,
including students, are needed to help with Bingo and sweater distribution on
the 11th.
Thanks to the 19 volunteers, including one first-timer, who worked really hard to
make our Halloween Bingo Party so much fun for the residents. Thanks also to
June Reinhardt who made great Halloween treat bags for the residents and to
others who donated prizes.
CALENDARS AND CARDS
Have you been receiving extra 2015 calendars and new Christmas cards in the
mail? Please consider donating them to our friends at local nursing homes and
the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen. Collection baskets will be at the entrances to
our churches beginning November 1.
TRENTON AREA SOUP KITCHEN
Wednesday, October 29, 10 am-1:15. YOU can help address the hunger problem right here in our community. Please consider joining us for our fifth
Wednesday serving commitment at TASK. If you would like to carpool to Trenton, meet in the St. Raphael parking lot no later than 10 am.
*****
For more information about either activity,
call Kathy Wooley at 585-4307.
If you would like a minister of Holy Communion to bring
Communion to you in your pew or wheelchair, would you
or a relative, friend or other Mass attendee please contact one of the ushers before Mass, so that he or one of
the other ushers can lead one of the ministers of Communion to you.
Lost & Found articles are kept in whichever church they are
found. In St. Raphael Church, there is a cart in the rear aisle
which holds items such as gloves, etc. If the item is more valuable, such as a cell phone, it is locked in the sacristy. In Holy
Angels Church, items are placed in the sacristy. Items are
only brought to the rectory for rare circumstances.
MASS while AWAY FROM HOME
If you are traveling, you can locate a Catholic church by going
to MassTimes.org or TheCatholicDirectory.com. When you
enter a ZIP code or city, you will be given a list of several
churches within a certain radius, along with each church’s
Mass schedule, location, etc. (You will need to wait several
seconds, while the website search is being completed.) This is
also a good planning tool for when you are preparing for a vacation or business trip.
MassTimes.org has an iPhone app: Mass Times for Travel.

Dear Parishioners,
I want to update you on the shoulder injury I sustained when I fell on
September 27. I met with my surgeon on Monday, October 20, and he
informed me, that further surgery will be necessary because of the
amount of damage sustained when I fell. I am waiting on some further

be unable to play at Masses during the months of November and December. Please continue to keep me in your prayers for a complete
