Dear parishioners,
[This is being written on Sunday, October 12, as I will be on vacation during the weeks of October 13 and 20.]
In last week’s bulletin, the pages were out of order. We contacted the printing vendor and are hopeful this will not
occur again. We apologize for the error.
The parish’s annual Communion breakfast (sponsored by the Rosary Altar Society) was last Sunday, October 12, in
the multi-purpose room of the parish center, following the 9:30 Mass. The speaker was Brian Horan, a parishioner and elementary-school teacher.
In my October 5 message, I mentioned my desire to start an annual parish mission each Lent. Several parishes
(including St. Gregory the Great Parish and St. Mary of the Lakes Parish, Medford) have a parish mission each year – usually
during Lent. A parish mission is usually a multi-day retreat, in church. On Wednesday, October 8, I met with Josephine
Woodward, who has generously responded to my request for someone to coordinate a new committee, i.e., the Annual Parish
Mission Committee. Her home phone number is 609-838-7587. My goal is to have the first annual parish mission in Lent of
2016. If you are interested in serving on the committee, please contact Josephine. She will need help with research into possible topics and speakers, refreshments, publicity, etc. Subsequently, two other parishioners contacted me in regard to the idea
of a parish mission. If you have suggestions for other spiritual activities in our parish, please let me know.
Last week, in response to our parish’s second annual, pre-Mass, “baby bottle drive” talks by representatives of Good
Counsel Homes-South Jersey (GCH), many of you took home a baby bottle. If you have not yet done so, I hope you will
bring the bottle back next weekend. Your donation will help GCH operate its only home in New Jersey for unwed mothers.
(GCH also operates four homes in and near New York City.) Located in our diocese – in Riverside (Burlington County) -- the
home is a refuge for pregnant women, including for a period of time after their child is born. Thank you for helping these
pregnant mothers say “yes” to life.
The diocese’s annual head count (in our 107 parishes in Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth, and Ocean counties) is this
weekend and next weekend. Last October’s annual count showed that approximately twenty-two percent of our registered
parishioners attended Sunday Mass in October 2013. (Some of the worshippers in each parish’s annual head count are from
other parishes.)
This Wednesday, October 22, is the optional Memorial of Saint John Paul II -- for the entire universal Church.
(Before Pope John Paul II was canonized in the spring [on April 27], the date of October 22 was celebrated as an optional memorial for then-Blessed John Paul II, but only in some nations, including the United States and Poland.) Eighty popes are canonized saints, but less than twenty have optional or obligatory memorials on the Church’s liturgical calendar. The two new
feast days were set forth in a decree issued on May 29 by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments (CDWDS) and published in the September 12 edition of L’Osservatore Romano.
Today – the final day of the III Extraordinary Synod of Bishops – our Holy Father, Pope Francis, will celebrate a
Mass for the beatification of Pope Paul VI (born on September 26, 1897, as Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini), who served as the Supreme Pontiff from June 21, 1963, until his death on August 6, 1978.
Today is World Mission Sunday. Saint Francis Xavier and St. Therese of Lisieux are the patrons of the missions.

“OPEN GARDEN” of the ROSARY WALK GARDEN
The St. Raphael-Holy Angels Filipino Community (SRHAFC) will
host an “open garden” (open house) for the new Rosary Walk
Garden (behind the St. John Paul II Spiritual Center) on Sunday,
October 26, after the 7:30 am, 9:30 am, and 11:30 am Masses,
Refreshments will be served in the narthex. SRHAFC members
will be available to show the garden and answer questions.
CORRECTION. For the morning Mass of Monday, October 6,
the name of the requester was incorrect. The parishioner who
was incorrectly listed informed us of the error. We apologize to
the person who actually requested that Mass intention. Please
continue to bring any errors or omissions to our attention. As
you know, every publication makes mistakes, but we do try to
prevent them and to correct them where possible.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY
World Mission Sunday, organized by the Propagation of the Faith, is a set
aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church’s missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice. In 2014, World Mission Sunday
is celebrated on October 19.
Annually, World Mission Sunday is celebrated on the next-to-last Sunday in
October. As described by Pope John Paul II, World Mission Sunday is “an
important day in the life of the Church because it teaches how to give: as an
offering made to God, in the Eucharistic celebration and for all the missions
of the world” (see Redemptoris Missio 81).
Pope John Paul II has also spoken of the Propagation of the Faith’s General
Fund of support, calling this a “central fund of solidarity.” In a message delivered on a recent World Mission Sunday, the Pope said: “The offerings that
will be collected [on World Mission Sunday] are destined for a common fund
of solidarity distributed, in the Pope’s name, by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith among the missions and missionaries of the entire world.”
Every year the needs of the Catholic Church in the Missions grow - as new
dioceses are format are formed, as new seminaries are opened because of
the growing number of young men hearing Christ’s call to follow Him as
priests, as areas devastated by war or natural disaster are rebuilt, and as
other areas, long suppressed, are opening up to hear the message of Christ
and His Church. That is why the involvement and commitment of Catholics
from around the world is so urgently needed. Offerings from Catholics in the
United States, on World Mission Sunday and throughout the year, are combined with offerings to the Propagation of the Faith worldwide.
Mission dioceses - about 1,100 at this time - receive regular annual assistance from the funds collected. In addition, these mission dioceses submit
requests to the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples for assistance, among other needs, for catechetical programs, seminaries, the work of
Religious Communities , for communication and transportation needs, and for
the building of chapels, churches, orphanages and schools. These needs are
matched with the funds gathered in each year. The world’s national directors
of the Propagation of the Faith vote on these requests, matching the funds
available with the greatest needs. These funds are then distributed, in their
entirety, to mission dioceses throughout the world.

On October 7, Bishop David O’Connell celebrated Mass
with Catholic school students, faculty and administrators
throughout the Diocese of Trenton. Mass was held at St.
Mary of the Assumption Cathedral in Trenton.

Over the course of my daily travels from time to time, I come across a homeless man in Trenton,
