Thank you to parents and friends of Waimate High
School who participated in our Sports and Cultural
Awards evening last Thursday. With over 240 people
present the hall was filled to capacity.
Matt Palmer was an inspirational guest speaker. He
shared with us his journey which started with making
the goal at an early age, to represent New Zealand. He
talked about the need to work hard and that there will
be setbacks along the way, that makes it even more
important to focus on your goal and passion. Matt
represented New Zealand at the Glasgow
Commonwealth Games and although he didn’t
achieve a medal placing he felt immense pride in
achieving the goal he set for himself. Before his
speech, the audience moved to the gymnasium where
they were treated to a brilliant exhibition on the rings
by both Matt and Year 8 student Travis Swan.
The Colour Awards were the elite awards for the
evening and we congratulate those students on their
fantastic achievements. These awards require
outstanding achievement over a sustained period of
time, reflecting the hard work and commitment of the
students.
Congratulations to our Colour Award recipients for
2014. They were:
Niamh O’Donnell – Junior Arts Colour Award for Visual
Arts. Niamh is heavily involved in the Arts and is
always looking for new opportunities to improve her
skills. She won the South Canterbury Arts Society
Award for Excellence and has been invited to exhibit
in their annual exhibition.
Eden Guyton - Junior Arts Colour Award for Vocal and
Music Performance. Eden is a rising talent who has
achieved impressively at competitions in Waimate,
Oamaru, Timaru and the Golden Guitar Awards in
Gore. She was invited to sing at Strawberry Fair last
year and has been asked again for this year.
Caitlin Fahey – Service Colour Award for service to
Basketball. Caitlin has generously given her time in
the organisation of basketball over a number of years.
She has umpired Tuesday and Friday night Basketball,
coached Miniball and captained the A Basketball
Team.
Dion Batchelor - Service Colour Award for service to
Rugby. Dion has contributed considerably to the
organisation of rugby throughout his time at school.
He was integral to introducing the Haka, coached a led
skill development of juniors and organised exchange
teams. Dion has been selected in the South
Canterbury Representative teams for 48kg, 65kg and
U16 and has been a member of the Country Team for
the past five years. He has captained both the WHS 1st
XV and the U18 Waimate Team.
Ashleigh Meyer – Junior Colour Award for Athletics.
Ashleigh always strives to do the best she can. In our
school athletics Ashleigh performed personal bests
and broke records in the 800m and 1500m. At the
Aoraki Secondary schools Athletics she won the 800m
and 1500m, and in the South Islands she was placed
3rd in 800m and 4th in 1500m.
Tandia Gooch - Junior Colour Award for Swimming.
Tandia broke numerous Waimate records across 15
different events in the 2013/14 season. She
performed successfully at the National Division 2

Planning is underway for Senior Prizegiving 7.30pm,
Tuesday 4 November. This is an opportunity to
celebrate excellence and the achievements of our
Senior students. Our guest speaker will be Gary
Endacott. He is the son of former League Star,
Warriors and Kiwi’s coach, Frank Endacott. He grew
up in Christchurch with three brothers and was born
with Cerebral Palsy. Despite numerous challenges
Gary has achieved impressive feats and has been
determined not to let anything prevent him from
achieving greatness. We are looking forward to
hearing the messages Gary has for us.
A Teachers’ Union meeting is to be held on
Wednesday 12 November. This will mean that the
teachers must attend a union meeting in Timaru. For
the students instruction will finish at 12 noon on that
day and we ask that parents make arrangements for
their student for the afternoon. The buses will run at
the usual time. Non-union staff will be available to
supervise students if they need to stay at school.
