"The whole law and the prophets depend on
these two commandments." The law of love. That's
what Jesus came to establish. In a religious milieu
that was often marked by legalism and
scrupulosity, Jesus brought a kind of freedom. He
reminded us that the laws of religion are made to
serve the ultimate goal of love: love for God and
love for neighbor.
Think about the Ten Commandments. This
classical summary of God's rules for us can be
divided into two types of laws. First come the laws
about loving God: have no strange gods; don't take
the Lord's name in vain; honor the Sabbath. Then
come the laws about loving our neighbor: honor
your parents; don't kill; don't commit adultery;
don't steal; be honest; and don't covet your
neighbor's spouse or property. When we follow the
law of love that Jesus preaches today, all of this is
taken care of.
If we loved God with our whole heart, mind,
and soul, for example, there would be no room left
for false gods. There would be no bitterness or
apathy leading us to disrespect God's name or to
fail to worship him as he has asked. Similarly, if
we loved our neighbors as ourselves by following
the Golden Rule, then we would naturally respect
them instead of lying, killing, coveting, or the like.
Ultimately, all the dos and don'ts of the law are
just specific guidelines describing what love looks
like. This is very helpful for those times when love
doesn't come so easily to us. When we struggle
with having our heart in the right place, the Ten
Commandments give us direction. But as Jesus
instructs us today, the goal is to grow in the kind of
love that naturally leads us to want to do what's
best.

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
The Sacrament of Baptism for Infants normally takes place during a
weekend celebration of the Eucharist or on Sundays at 1:00 P.M. For
the baptism of their first child, parents are expected to attend a baptismal session with Fr. Lubomir. Please call the rectory office for an
appointment. Catholic godparents for infants must be at least 16
years of age, confirmed, and regularly practicing the faith with a freedom to receive the Eucharist.
CHRISTIAN INITIATION
Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Catholic Church
should contact a member of the parish staff.
SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE
Please call the Pastor nine months in advance to make arrangements
for instruction and planning the marriage ceremony.

We are always happy to welcome new parishioners to Sacred Heart
Parish. Please introduce yourself to a member of the parish staff and
register at the rectory. Registration, the practice of stewardship,
and regular participation in the Eucharist indicate that a person is an
active member of the parish and is eligible to act as a godparent or
sponsor. As a Church community seeking to be faith-filled disciples
and good stewards, the sacrifice of our time, talent and treasure is

Altar Server Appreciation Mass and Dessert
As a way to thank the many Altar Servers
throughout our Diocese for their service and
as an attempt to promote Vocations to
priesthood and consecrated religious life,
the Diocesan Office of Vocations is sponsoring an Altar Server Appreciation Mass
and Dessert at the Basilica of St. Michael
the Archangel in Loretto on Sunday, November 23 beginning at 2:00 p.m. Bishop Mark will be
the Principal Celebrant and Homilist. A sign-up sheet is
available in the Sacristy.
Grief / Faith Luncheon
Our Grief / Faith Support Committee would like to invite
anyone who has experienced grief to join us on November
7th for our Faith and Fellowship luncheon from 12:30 to
1:45 p.m. in the Formation Center. Sign up sheets will be
in the back of the Church.
Fall Social
There will be a Fall Social following the
5:30 p.m. Mass on Saturday, November 1.

church. All food will be provided. We just
need to know the number of people who
will be attending. Please sign your name
and the number of people. This event is being planned by
our Social Committee.
Theology on Tap: A Series on Pope Francis
Theology on Tap is a casual speaker/discussion series for
young adults 18-29. November 3 at 7:00 p.m. at Zach’s
in Altoona. Bishop Mark will present Pope Francis and
the New Evangelization.

Liturgical Reflection…
The ministry of preaching draws its content mainly from scriptural and liturgical
sources. By means of the homily, the
mysteries of the faith and the guiding
principles of the Christian life are expounded from the sacred text during the
course of the liturgical year. At the Second Vatican
Council the bishops of the world strongly recommended
the homily at liturgy. In fact it was understood that the
homily would always be part of Mass on Sundays and
holy days of obligation.

Parish Flower Gardens
Thanks to the leadership of Bernice Cellini and Diana
Hite, our flower gardens had quite a display of vivid colors all summer and into the fall as well. We thank them
and Dick Cellini, Andrey Lear and Nick O’Brien for preparing our flower beds for the winter months.
Love Feasts
Our parish hosted the last of our Love Feasts at Simpson
Temple United Parish for this year, on Saturday, October
25th. Gratitude is extended to the coordinators, and the
numerous volunteers who prepared, served, baked, and
cleaned up.
Angel Fund
We thank Rose Marlett for her donation to the Angel
Fund in memory of her husband, Tom and daughter, Bonnie Webb.
We also thank Bill and Kate Burr for their donation to the
Angel Fund in memory of Vincent Burr, Sr.
Calendar of Cash
Beginning the weekend of November 8/9,
the Calendar of Cash tickets will be available in the vestibule after all of the weekend Masses. Please be supportive. This is
our only fund-raiser. Tickets are $25 and
the number is good for the year. Payouts range from $25
to $500.

Anniversary Plans
On July 13th, 1890, Fr. Thomas P.
Smith, the newly appointed pastor,
celebrated the first Mass for the newly
established Sacred Heart Parish in a
building on the corner of 7th Avenue
and 24th Street. In 2015, our Parish
Family will celebrate 125 years of
ministry. We will be celebrating this great milestone with
several events and activities throughout 2015/16. The
highlight of the year long celebration will be a Mass of
Thanksgiving in Honor of the parish’s 125th anniversary,
concelebrated by Bishop Mark at the 12:00 Noon Mass on
Sunday, July 12th, 2015. A Dinner Celebration will follow at the Jaffa Shrine.
We would like to create a Christian theme slogan. We are
asking all parishioners to take part in this by submitting
your thoughts and writing a theme slogan for the event.
The slogan should be limited to one sentence and no more
than 15 words. If your slogan is chosen, you and your
immediate family will be awarded tickets for the celebration dinner following the Mass on July 12th. The deadline
to submit the theme slogan will be Sunday, November
30, 2014. Your entry can be dropped off at the rectory or
placed in the collection basket in a sealed envelope and
marked 125th Anniversary Theme. If you have any
questions, feel free to contact Jeff Arpino at 932-6452 or
call the rectory at 943-8553.
Healing Mass at the Cathedral
There will be a Healing Mass on Monday, November 24
at 7:00 p.m. at the Cathedral. Fr. Bill Kiel, from the Diocese of Greensburg, will be the main celebrant. All are
welcome, especially those in need of physical, emotional,
or spiritual healing, and those who support and care for
them as well. Music for the Mass will be led by the Cathedral Charismatic Prayer Group Music Ministry. For
