Sacred Heart Church 511 Twentieth Street • Altoona, PA 16602 (814) 943-8553 • FAX (814) 943-1556 E-mail: [email protected] Website: www.sacredheartaltoona.org 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 12, 2014 "He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come." Why? What made the king's invitation so distasteful to these guests? According to the parable, either the guests were too busy with their farms and their businesses, or else they were downright hostile to the entire idea: they "laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them." What could possibly explain this resistance? Perhaps we have a clue in the puzzling conclusion of today's Gospel. One of the secondstring guests pulled in from the streets came to the feast "not dressed in a wedding garment." The man knew he was guilty, hence his silence. And the king's punishment suggests that the fellow ought to have known better. This "wedding garment" calls to mind the preparation of our souls necessary to join in the great "wedding feast of the Lamb" (Rv 19:9), that is, heaven. This man was apparently just too lazy to get ready. He presumed that having received an invitation to the banquet was enough, that nothing was required of him. Not so. He should have demonstrated his gratitude by dressing appropriately. And what of the first-string guests? Some were too busy to bother coming; others were furious that they had been invited at all. Now, where do we fit in? Are we more concerned with worldly work than with spiritual growth? Are we offended by the very suggestion that we might need to "dress up" our souls? Or are we the disinterested Christian, willing to feast but too lazy to foster his faith? Jesus gave his life to open the gates of heaven for us. Let's show our gratitude by preparing radiant, beautiful souls worthy of the heavenly wedding feast. 2014-Liturgical Publications Rev. Ľubomír J. PRO-LIFE CORNER The war on the pre-born is the only war in which America is involved where the casualties are 100%; the baby always dies. The moms, dads, and close family members suffer physical, mental, and spiritual wounds. Pray to end this holocaust. Families and the Gospel Today’s gospel speaks about “unworthy wedding guests.” What makes a “worthy” guest? Presence and presents are not enough. The greatest gift we can give is support to the couple as they voyage through life together because marriage naturally contains within it the fields of disappointment. Think of the weddings you’ve attended. Have you been a “worthy guest?” Liturgical Reflection… The prayers addressed to God by the priest at Mass, who resides over the assembly in the person of Christ, are said in the name of the entire holy people and of all present. And the visible signs used by the liturgy to signify invisible divine realities have been chosen by Christ or the Church. The proclaimed scriptures instruct the faithful on the life of faith. And when the Church prays or sings or acts, the faith of those gathered is nourished and strengthened. With minds raised to God, the holy people offer God their worship as intelligent beings and receive his grace more abundantly. Smith, the newly appointed pastor, celebrated the first Mass for the newly established Sacred Heart Parish in a building on the corner of 7th Avenue and 24th Street. In 2015, our Parish Family will celebrate 125 years of ministry. We will be celebrating this great milestone with several events and activities throughout 2015/16. The highlight of the year long celebration will be a Mass of Thanksgiving in Honor of the parish’s 125th anniversary, concelebrated by Bishop Mark at the 12:00 Noon Mass on Sunday, July 12th. A Dinner Celebration will follow at the Jaffa Shrine. We would like to create a Christian theme slogan. We are asking all parishioners to take part in this by submitting your thoughts and writing a theme slogan for the event. The slogan should be limited to one sentence and no more than 15 words. If your slogan is chosen, you and your immediate family will be awarded tickets for the celebration dinner following the Mass on July 12th. The deadline to submit the theme slogan will be Sunday, November 30, 2014. Your entry can be dropped off at the rectory or placed in the collection basket in a sealed envelope and marked 125th Anniversary Theme. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Jeff Arpino at 932-6452 or call the rectory at 943-8553.
