We all know how we need younger members to carry on Fr. McGivney’s Vision of helping the marginalized in our community, so let’s step up our efforts - this is critical to our ongoing success. We continue to hear The Holy Father speak about caring for the poor and needy in our community. As we prepare for Lent, let’s take some time to ask ourselves” What have I done for these people?” May God Bless each of you for helping do His Work in our Community. Vivat Jesus, Dick Dodson, Grand Knight Knight of the Month This month the Msgr. James R. Jones, Council 3303 proudly recognize Jim Kelly as our Knight of the Month. Council 3303 is very grateful to Jim Kelly for the many hours of hard work he has been enduring in order to put together the North Carolina Knights of Columbus 95th Annual State Convention which will be held in New Bern on May 15-17th, 2015. This three-day event will be attended by over 400 individuals from across the State of North Carolina. Jim has been involved in all aspects of planning and organizing the convention. Committees have been formed to set up hospitality rooms, meeting rooms, luncheons (including a fashion show for the women), tours, raffles, a formal dinner, and a program book, which helps defray the cost we incur. While serving us as Chairman of the Convention, Jim is still maintaining his position as Treasurer of the Columbus Club and continues to be a worker at Bingo. He has also served as Chairman of the Lamb Program. Thank you Jim, for all that you do for our Council and especially for taking on the responsibility of Chairman of the Convention. Nancy Stewart PR –St. Paul Catholic School PAGE 5 KNIGHTLIGHTER V O L U ME 20 1 5 , I S S U E 1 Faithful Navigators Report Sir Knights, Approaching the Holy season of Lent is a wonderful time for self assessment, especially our relationship with our God, our family, our involvement in Council and Assembly activities and most importantly ourselves. Attending the Stations of the Cross every Friday night might be a good way to start, attending daily Mass, sharing our time with some residents of local nursing homes or volunteering at Religious Community Services which always needs help serving at the Soup Kitchen and generally giving of ourselves to meet the needs of others less fortunate. The Knights will have Fish Fry dinners before Stations of the Cross on four Fridays in Lent. All will be at St. Paul Family Life Center beginning at 5:30 PM. The dates are February 20th, February 27th, March 6th and March 20th. Please be sure to make a concerted effort to come join us for dinner and attend the Stations with your family. Also planned is a Day of Recollection for all men of St. Paul parish sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and conducted by Fr. Tom Tully. More information on this event will be available at a later date. Remember, prayer changes things. PAGE 6 KNIGHTLIGHTER V O L U ME 20 1 5 , I S S U E 1 Happy New Year Brothers, I pray 2015 brings all you want it to for you and your families. The Knights of Columbus Insurance Program celebrated the 2015 New Year with it's 14th consecutive year of Double Digit Growth. We are now over 100 Billion Strong. We hold the highest insurance ratings given by A. M. Best and the Insurance Marketplace Standards Association. The reason for our growth is our dedication to our members. We were founded by a priest, not a CFO, and we care about our members more than our profit. Our strength is predicated on Principal. This month I would like to share this article from the Wall Street Journal to emphasize the importance of Long Term Care. Americans are strongly underestimating their future needs for long-term care, a potentially costly oversight that could hurt them in their retirement years. About 60 percent of adults between 40 and 65 years old don't think they'll need long-term care services, according to a new Health Affairs study. That's much less than the 70 percent of people at least 65 years old who will need long-term care services at some point either in their home or at a facility, according to a widely cited earlier study from the Georgetown University Long-Term Care Financing Project. That includes 20 percent who will need between two to five years of long-term care and 20 percent who'll need more than five years. And the care could come at an extremely high cost. The national average annual rate for a private nursing home room is about $95,000, the average assisted living community costs $42,600, and the average hourly rate for home health aides is $21, according to the 2012 MetLife Market survey of long-term care costs. A major reason people are too optimistic is that they think their families will take care of them. Almost 75 percent expect their families will provide long-term care, which was about seven times more than those expecting to need a home health agency, nursing facility or assisted living facility, according to the Health Affairs study, which analyzed responses from the 2012 National Health Interview Survey. People in the survey were asked to say who they expect would provide long-term care, even if they didn't think they needed it. Most members felt it was too costly until I showed them a way to fit it within their budget. Did you know the accumulated benefit passes to the surviving spouses bucket upon passing. Your money stays in the family. It does not pay for new lights on Met Life stadium. The Knights support many organizations, among them are Special Olympics, Relay for Life, Eastern Pregnancy Information Center, Senior Pharmacy, Fund for Needy Children, Religious Community Services, Wounded Warriors Leave Program, MERCI Clinic, and many others. The Knights of Columbus would like to thank you for your continued support of their projects. The Stewarts, Public Relations 4th Degree Convention News If each Knight would make an effort to get at least 2 or more ads, we could go over the top with ads. This would not only be a financial success, it will help show the support we can get from the community. We think the community is more than aware of how the Knights assist in the community and will be eager to help. You don't have to ask just places of business. A friend or relative might want to take out an ad and wish the Knights well in their continued service. If you need help with putting or designing the ads, we have a great team and they are willing to assist. Just get the names of where/who you intend to ask and send it to us and we will take care of the rest. Of course we want the check. Now in lieu of taking an ad, they might not want to spend that much money. We can offer a "one liner" for $20. This would just be a short line maybe saying something like "We wish the Knights a successful convention- Jack and Mary Smith" or "Thanks to the Knights for all they contribute to the community-John and Betty Jones" or " I am proud to be a Knight-Bob Spencer" or My wife and I are proud to be part of the Knight family-Michael and Susan Johnson" Please only offer that after you have used all of your "friendly, gentle persuasive charm" to get an ad. Please send us back the names of people or places you will approach, so we can avoid duplication of effort. We will send out list as we get them. Until we can get our committee together for a meeting, please direct all questions to us, either by e-mail [email protected] or phone 633-9419. They will certainly be involved. Any actual ads/forms you get please save and let us know. We will make arrangements to get it from you. The Stewarts Non-Profit Organization THE KNIGHTLIGHTER K OF C Msgr. James R.
