Solemnity of the Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 26, 2014 Dear Members and Friends of St. Mary’s/ St. Patrick’s, and St. Peter’s Cathedral: “Each of us is a masterpiece of God’s creation.” That is the theme of Respect Life Month, 2014, and if we are honest, we must confess that we are often reluctant to believe it. That is why we need the reminder that this month brings. The power of sin is real and presses us to reject or diminish the humanity of others: those we don’t like, those who don’t look like us, those whose abilities are diminished by age or illness, those who are hidden away in the womb. But the Law of Moses in our first reading reminds us that the alien, the widow and the orphan, and the poor are particularly deserving of justice and fairness. In today’s Gospel Jesus summarizes the law by commanding love of God and love of neighbor. He adds that the second commandment is similar to the first; love of neighbor rests on the same foundation as the love of God. Each is founded in God’s love for the world which reaches its fulfillment in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We can easily forget or reject what God teaches us about the neighbor. If the neighbor seems repellent Medal of Merit Ceremony This Sunday afternoon, October 26 at 3:00 PM at St. John the Beloved Church, Bishop Malooly will present the Medal of Merit to honorees from each parish in the diocese. Honorees are from St. Mary’s, Valerie Townsend; from St. Patrick’s, Richard Bockrath; and from St. Peter’s Cathedral, Mrs. Margaret Consiglio. (The service is not a Mass). to us or wicked or useless, we will be tempted to deny his humanity or to deny her value. But we must recognize this as the grave sin that it is. As humans we are limited in what we can do for our neighbors. We can pray for all – and let’s not forget that – but none of us has the time, energy, and money to care for all our neighbors. What should we do? We should remember that God calls upon all of us to recognize our neighbor as neighbor and to extend ourselves for the sake of other people insofar as he enables us to do so. Our first duty is to those closest to us, but in exercising that duty we learn to love others and to reach out and assist them as God enables us and leads us. The Lord’s great summary of the Law reminds us of the fundamental reason why the Church must speak out for life and why there is in America a Respect Life Month: we owe it to our neighbors to defend their lives! The love of the neighbor begins with the defense of life itself, God’s primary gift and the civil right on which all other rights depend. In Christ, Fr. Campaign proceeds received after our goal is met will be 60% for our parish and 40% for our Diocese.
