WE GATHER TO WORSHIP Greeting One: The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. All: And also with you. One: Let us prepare for worship. Karl Zinsmeister Preparation for Worship Our God, we are a church reformed, a church reforming still: we long to grow in your true Word, and follow more your will. text: ©1998 by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette from Gifts of Love (Geneva Press, 2000) Prelude - “Festival Finale” on JERUSALEM C. H. Parry; arr. D. Benton Brass, Handbells, Organ and Timpani Christian Welcome and Announcements Chip Pope Please pass the Friendship Register to your neighbor; include all requested information. Call to Worship (8:15) Bill Preston; (9:30) Abigail Livengood; (11:00) John Sloop One: This is the greatest and first commandment: All: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind. One: The second commandment is like this: All: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. from Matthew 22 *Hymn 270 - O Lord, You Are My God and King *Call to Confession JERUSALEM (8:15) Bryan Boyd; (9:30) Kathy Volcjak; (11:00) Cindy Sharp *Prayer of Confession Merciful God, we confess that we have not given ourselves to the service of your kingdom. You have called us to bear witness to the Gospel by sharing the good news of Christ and by serving those in need; yet we have been afraid to tell your good news to a world that needs to hear it. We have been more concerned with preserving our own welfare than with serving those who are truly needy. Forgive our fear and selfishness and help us by your Spirit to give ourselves unreservedly to your holy service through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Church historians have noted a coherent pattern: approximately every five centuries, there is a shift in the life cycle of faith: 900 BCE: Establishment of Monarchy under King David 400 BCE: Babylonian captivity and the writing of the Old Testament 70-130 CE: Birth of Christianity 600 CE: Gregory I and establishment of monasticism 1054 CE: The Great Schism, splitting the Roman church and the Greek church 1517 CE: The Great Reformation 2014 CE: The church reformed and reforming - from The Great Emergence by Phylis Tickle The Reformation brought radical change to church design. In England, stone altars were removed and replaced by a single wood table. The crucifix was replaced by an empty cross, and the Rood screen, which separated the nave and congregation from the chancel and clergy, was often replaced with a chancel rail. As the sermon became the central act in the church service, church design focused on enabling all to hear and see the minister. These influences are visible in the White Memorial sanctuary today. *Assurance of Pardon *Passing of the Peace *Response - Hymn 275, stanzas 1 and 2 EIN’ FESTE BURG A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing. Our helper he, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe. His craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal. Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, were not the right man on our side, the man of God’s own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he. Lord Sabaoth his name, from age to age the same, and he must win the battle. Sermon - Tell Me Again Christopher Edmonston WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD *Hymn 462 - I Love to Tell the Story To include more people in worship, WMPC’s sanctuary balcony was modified and equipment installed to enable live internet streaming of worship services. Streaming began in 2012 and has allowed homebound people, friends at a distance and international travelers to worship with us. HANKEY Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer Nolan Huizenga Offertory Anthem - With a Voice of Singing Martin Shaw (1875-1958) With a voice of singing declare ye this, and let it be heard, Alleluia. Utter it even unto the ends of the earth. The Lord hath delivered his people, Alleluia. O be joyful in God, all ye lands, O sing praises to the honor of his name, make his praise to be glorious. Isa. 48:20b; Ps. 66:1-2 *Doxology Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below; praise God above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. *All who are able may stand. OLD HUNDREDTH; arr. R. V. W. *Affirmation of Faith adapted from the Scots Confession, Chapter 16 We believe in one God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, so we firmly believe that from the beginning there has been, now is, and to the end of the world shall be, one Kirk, that is to say, one company and multitude of people chosen by God, who rightly worship and embrace God by true faith in Jesus Christ, who is the only Head of the Kirk, even as it is the body and spouse of Christ Jesus. This Kirk is catholic, that is, universal, because it contains the chosen of all ages, of all realms, nations, and tongues, be they of the Jews or be they of the Gentiles, who have communion and society with God the Father, and with God’s Son, Christ Jesus, through the sanctification of his Holy Spirit. WE GO IN GOD’S NAME *Hymn 771 - What is the World Like NEW WORLD *Charge and Benediction *Congregational Response - Hymn 275, stanza 4 EIN’ FESTE BURG God’s word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth. The Spirit and the gifts are ours through him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also. The body they may kill; God’s truth abideth still. His kingdom is forever. *Chiming of the Trinity You are invited to be seated for the postlude. Postlude - A Mighty Fortress Is Our God M. Luther; arr. D.E. Kirk is Scottish and northern English dialect for “church,” from Old Norse. In 1560, the Scottish Parliament, having declared Scotland a Protestant nation, asked the clergy to frame a confession of faith. Six ministers, including John Knox, completed their work in four days. As a call to action in a turbulent time, the Scots Confession reflects a spirit of trust and a commitment to the God whose miraculous deliverance the Scots had experienced firsthand. - from The Book of Confessions, PCUSA WELCOME TO WHITE MEMORIAL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, PC(USA) We are glad you are worshipping with us.
