Issue no. 1089 School Bulletin A fond farewell Friday 24 Oct 2014 Important dates This is always the longest half-term and staff, students, parents, carers and governors have worked closely and consistently together throughout to make it a productive and positive experience for students. Sadly, PC Akan is leaving ABS this week. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Akan for his professionalism and for keeping students and staff safe and well supported over his 5 years of working with ABS as our Safer School Police Officer. We all wish him every success for the next phase of his career. After half-term, it is Bonfire Night and all students and their families are advised to take great care with safety during any events. I would like to remind families that fireworks are not allowed on the school site at any time (see Behaviour Policy). During the second week back, we will have a Whole-school Remembrance Assembly to mark this very special day. There is also a Destinations Fair for year 9, 11 and Sixth-form parents and carers during lesson 1 on Thursday 13 November, and year 10 parents and carers are invited to attend Parents’ Evening on the same day. This is an excellent opportunity to hear from your child’s teachers on how well they are progressing, how they can do even better, and how you can support them at home, so please ensure you attend. It is so lyrical it should be sentimental; it is so passionate it should be overwrought, but it is instead a rigorous, convincing and dazzling piece of prose, as emotionally satisfying as it is impressive. Year Aspiration Session On Wednesday, 21 pupils from Year 7 went to the Olympic Park for a geography trip. They looked at how the area has changed since the Olympic Park opened, building on fieldwork skills they had learnt since September. Everyone gave 100% during the day, here is Alfie, Arthur and Max’s description of the day: Some Yr 9 students took part in their second Aspirational Session yesterday during period 1 in the il@b. We did a range of different activities that included: a survey of peoples’ opinions of Olympic regeneration, a bi-polar analysis of the Olympic Village and Stratford New Town and we created orienteering trails through the Olympic Park! I really enjoyed the trip, especially seeing new landmarks like the Velodrome. My favourite part of the day was when we got to do the survey of people’s opinions of the regeneration because I liked to hear other people’s opinions and views. Overall the trip was brilliant and a good opportunity to improve our field work skills, though it was far from a lesson. Ms Shah Bee Rowlatt, writer, journalist & broadcaster, very kindly came into school to support this session. Bee brought in her CV and discussed with students various issues/topics surrounding her career path. Bee spoke about how in the beginning of her career she coped with having too much work and not wanting to turn it down for fear of not being offered any in the future. Students also heard about the work/ home life balance of a woman. Bee spoke about knowing more than one language and how this helped her in her career, students spoke in turn about what they had taken from the session and what they would remember and work on. Gamu Tauro Tracey Maker Travel and Tourism visit to the Southbank Year 10 Travel and Tourism students spent the day visiting the Southbank last Tuesday.
