School Bulletin
A fond farewell
Friday 24 Oct 2014
Important dates
This is always the longest half-term and staff, students, parents, carers and governors
have worked closely and consistently together throughout to make it a productive
and positive experience for students.
Sadly, PC Akan is leaving ABS this week. I would like to take this opportunity to thank
Akan for his professionalism and for keeping students and staff safe and well supported over his 5 years of working with ABS as our Safer School Police Officer. We all
wish him every success for the next phase of his career.
After half-term, it is Bonfire Night and all students and their families are advised to
take great care with safety during any events. I would like to remind families that
fireworks are not allowed on the school site at any time (see Behaviour Policy).
During the second week back, we will have a Whole-school Remembrance
Assembly to mark this very special day. There is also a Destinations Fair for year 9, 11
and Sixth-form parents and carers during lesson 1 on Thursday 13 November, and
year 10 parents and carers are invited to attend Parents’ Evening on the same day.
This is an excellent opportunity to hear from your child’s teachers on how well they
are progressing, how they can do even better, and how you can support them at
home, so please ensure you attend.

“For me, THEIR EYES
WERE WATCHING GOD
is one of the very greatest American novels of
the 20th century. It is so
lyrical it should be
sentimental; it is so
passionate it should be
overwrought, but it is
instead a rigorous,
convincing and dazzling
piece of prose, as
emotionally satisfying as
it is impressive. There is
no novel I love more.”

Y7 Humanities trip to Stratford!
Year Aspiration Session
On Wednesday, 21 pupils from Year 7 went to the
Olympic Park for a geography trip. They looked at
how the area has changed since the Olympic
Park opened, building on fieldwork skills they had
learnt since September. Everyone gave 100%
during the day, here is Alfie, Arthur and Max’s
description of the day:
Some Yr 9 students took part in their second Aspirational
Session yesterday during period 1 in the il@b.
We did a range of different activities that
included: a survey of peoples’ opinions of
Olympic regeneration, a bi-polar analysis of the
Olympic Village and Stratford New Town and we
created orienteering trails through the Olympic
Park! I really enjoyed the trip, especially seeing
new landmarks like the Velodrome. My favourite
part of the day was when we got to do the survey
of people’s opinions of the regeneration because
I liked to hear other people’s opinions and views.
Overall the trip was brilliant and a good
opportunity to improve our field work skills, though
it was far from a lesson.
Ms Shah
Bee Rowlatt, writer, journalist & broadcaster, very kindly came
into school to support this session. Bee brought in her CV and
discussed with
students various
issues/topics
surrounding her
career path. Bee
spoke about how
in the beginning
of her career she
coped with
having too much
work and not wanting to turn it down for fear of not being
offered any in the future. Students also heard about the work/
home life balance of a woman.
Bee spoke about knowing more than one language and how
this helped her in her career, students spoke in turn about
what they had taken from the session and what they would
remember and work on.

Travel and Tourism visit to the Southbank
Year 10 Travel and Tourism students spent the day visiting the
Southbank last Tuesday. Students walked from Big Ben to
London Bridge, investigating tourist attractions that would
appeal to visitors from abroad. Students worked hard and
were well focussed
throughout.
Congratulations to
everyone that took part.

BECOME A PARENT GOVERNOR AT ACLAND BURGHLEY IN 2014
Acland Burghley School needs to appoint a new Parent Governor
The Governing Body of every school includes Parent Governors. Parent Governors have the same status, duties and
responsibilities as the other Governors. They are elected by the parents of children registered at the school and their
term of office lasts for four years.
The Governing Body meets four times a year, and has formed committees which also meet twice each term to discuss
specific aspects of the Governors' responsibilities. The meetings usually take place in the early evening.
Every parent of a child registered at the school is eligible to serve as a Parent Governor. The definition of parent
includes natural parents of the child, whether or not they are living with them, and those who have legal or actual
custody of the child.
We nominations from all parents, particularly those from black and minority ethnic backgrounds as these groups are
under-represented on our governing body.
If you would like to serve as a Parent Governor yourself, or would like to nominate another person as a Parent
Governor, you will need to complete a nomination form, and the nominee may provide a personal statement of up to
150 words, to be returned to the Acland Burghley School Office (for the attention of the Head’s PA) by 9am on
WEDNESDAY 12 NOVEMEBER. More nomination forms are available from the school office.
The arrangements for the nomination of Parent Governors are:

Nomination forms, together with personal statements of up to 150 words are to be returned to the Acland
Burghley School Office (for the attention of the Head’s PA) by 9am on WEDNESDAY 12 NOVEMBER.

If there is only one nomination, then the person nominated will automatically be declared a Governor and this
will be notified to all parents in the school bulletin on FRIDAY 14 NOVEMBER.

If the number of nominations is greater than the number of vacancies, an election will be held.
The arrangements for an election for Parent Governors will be as follows:

The school will send ballot papers listing the names of the candidates and their personal statements to all
parents and carers – one ballot paper per household. The candidate nominations list and personal statements
will also be set out in the school bulletin on FRIDAY 14 NOVEMBER and on the school’s website.

Voting will take place by returning the ballot papers to the school office. These must be received by 9am on
FRIDAY 28 NOVEMBER. The Headteacher will conduct the count. In the event of a tie, the position shall fall to
the parent with the youngest child in the school. The count will take place at 10am on FRIDAY 28 NOVEMBER at
the school. The Headteacher will notify the candidates of the results. The names of the successful candidates
will be published in the school bulletin on FRIDAY 28 NOVEMBER.
If you would like to find out more about being a Parent Governor, please contact the school. Our present Parent
Governors are Kevin Barton, Sebastian Camisuli, Josie Smalling, James Stephenson, Julian Turner and Melissa Danbury.
Any of them would be pleased to explain the role. You can contact them via the school.
