Today is October 26, 2014 — 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time
TODAY
The greatest commandment is clear: “You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart.” The second greatest
commandment is equally clear: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” What is not clear, perhaps, is what these
commandments mean.
The juxtaposition of these two commandments, both chosen from the Hebrew Scriptures, would seem to clarify at
least to some extent what it means to love God: one way we humans express our love for God is by loving our
neighbor.
Today’s liturgy attempts to clarify the matter of loving one’s neighbor by another juxtaposition, preceding the Gospel
with the passage from Exodus about treating justly the most vulnerable people in society.
The implication is that loving our neighbor means more than being kind to our friends and relatives, or to the person
who lives next door. Loving one’s neighbor means doing right by any widow or orphan: seeing that the hungry are fed
and the homeless sheltered, that the poor have their basic needs met, that the unemployed do not suffer from want,
that the young are educated and the old are cared for.
To do less is to fail in our love for our neighbor. To do less is also to keep us from singing with joy: “I love you, Lord, my
strength.”

This Sunday the CONFIRMATION PROGRAM will be providing greeters and gift bearers. The CONFIRMATION PROGRAM will
host the donuts and coffee in the school auditorium after the Mass. Next Sunday will be hosted by the Italian Catholic
Federation & Legion of Mary.
SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY CLOTHING DRIVE
This weekend, October 25th and 26th the St. Vincent de Paul Society will be collecting clean and useable coats, pants,
shirts, sweaters, jackets, bedding materials as well as pots, pans, utensils, etc. These items will be directly distributed to the
poor and homeless throughout the city. Please note that the greatest needs are for men’s items as well as donations for
children’s clothing and accessories. We ask that you separate the men’s, women’s, and children’s items into separate bags
and mark them accordingly. Please bring your donations to the SVDP van that will be parked outside the church. Thank you
very much.

FREE FLU SHOTS
On Sunday, November 9th beginning at 10:30 am in the Collins Center, Walgreens is providing our parishioners with free flu
shots. In order to take advantage of this offer, you must sign up at the Rectory and fill out the appropriate form. You will need
to pick up the form at the Rectory and bring the form with you on November 9th. If you have any questions, call the Rectory
664-8481.
COLLINS CENTER NEWS
Halloween Parade: Come enjoy the St. Cecilia children as they parade along in all their glory on October 31st at 11:10 am.
Grandparents and all senior citizens, even the young seniors, will have chairs available for premier viewing! Pumpkin pie
and coffee will be served afterwards in the Collins Center.
Election Day: Next Tuesday, November 4th, the Collins Center will be utilized as a voting location. Therefore, all of the Collins
Center activities are cancelled for that one day. That means no French, Italian, Spanish, Exercise, or BINGO classes.
Thanksgiving/Birthday Luncheon: This year’s Thanksgiving luncheon will be held on Monday, November 10th at 12:00 pm at
City Forest Hall, at 254 Laguna Honda Blvd. Carpooling and parking will be available. The cost is $20 per person for a
traditional Thanksgiving meal complete with beverages and dessert.
If you can join in, please send a check payable to St. Cecilia Parish along with your name and telephone number and
place it in the rectory mail slot on or before next Monday, November 3rd. Please mark “Attention Collins Center” on the
outside of your envelope. We will also be celebrating anyone with a November birthday!
15TH ANNUAL POST - THANKSGIVING RETREAT

Enjoy our unique St. Cecilia Parish Family spirit together at CYO Center in the heart of the Redwoods in Occidental,
California. Activities for the entire family (children, teens and adults), as well as time in separate groups. Free baby-sitting for
3 - 6 year olds. All six meals will be provided at the retreat center. You can choose to come as a family or as an individual.
Stay at the Center and enjoy your own heated cabin or share with another family or friends, or you can stay at a hotel in
Occidental for an additional fee. You may drive or be part of a car-pool.
COST: $110 per adult; $60 per youth ages 8-18; (children 7 and under FREE). This includes 6 meals, heated sleeping cabins,
as well as use of all facilities, including heated lodge, campfire areas, basketball and volleyball courts, outdoor chapel,
playing field, and hiking trails. For those choosing to stay at the hotel in Occidental, there is an additional $300 for a room

SAINT PETER’S ANNUAL MEMORIAL MASS will be held on Sunday, November 2nd at 2:30 pm celebrated by Bishop

reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Toni Ortenzo, a teacher for 42 years and Fred Clark, volunteer teacher for 18 years will
