Create your own adventure on our sandy beaches or have a picnic on the Fortress wall. This summer, you will also have the opportunity to dance the humppa at Kehruuhuone or admire the imperial décor of Finland's oldest timber town hall. The doors of the Old Town Hall will be open on most Saturdays, and for two weeks at the end of July. New life has been breathed to the Fortress by the Kehruuhuone, and it is now bursting with Karelian vitality and culture. Come and visit Finland's oldest Orthodox church, honey farmers at work, boutiques, a wide range of museums and farm animals, and take part in our city's many events throughout the summer. In July, don't miss the opportunity to take a selfie with a dragoon. Here in Lappeenranta, it will be safe to approach the horses and their riders. The summer will not be complete without going on at least one cruise. Pick whatever size boat suits you the best and any of the routes leading out the busy harbour of Lappeenranta. Visa-free cruises to Vyborg or St. Petersburg also depart from Lappeenranta. Our national gemstone of Finland, spectrolite, is on display at the Ylämaa Gem Village, the Ylämaa Gem Museum and the workshops of stone blacksmiths. More shops and also our Tourism Information are now also available at the IsoKristiina shopping centre, bordering Kansalaistori Square. Images and stories of heroes of fantasy, sports and real life will fill the Sandcastle. In the summer of 2015, the Sandcastle will be built in Lappeenranta for the twelfth time. Located in the fortress headland, the main attraction for local residents and tourists alike will be opened on 6 June 2015. The Sandcastle area will be open to visitors free of charge to the end of August. The 2015 theme for the Sandcastle, Heroes, was selected on the basis of suggestions from the public, which were gathered this year via the Sandcastle's Facebook pages. The Sandcastle area will be full of events and programmes this summer. The City of Lappeenranta will provide tourist information services in the Sandcastle area. Street train tours start and end at the Sandcastle, and there will be a café, an ice cream stand, rides and plenty of things to do in the area. Bicycles and kayaks will also be available for rent in the Sandcastle area. THE SANDCASTLE AREA WILL BE OPEN FROM 6 JUNE TO 30 AUGUST 2015 from 10 am to 9 pm. SUMMER DAYS FOR FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN 13 Lappeenranta provides a wide range of opportunities to spend quality time with the kids without spending a lot of money. Below are some tips on ways to have fun in Lappeenranta free of charge. Myllysaari Recreation Area Versatile beach services, beach volleyball courts, green spaces, shallow beaches safe for young children etc. Sandcastle Area Traffic City The Children's Traffic City (a traffic park) is situated close to the city centre on Valtakatu, next to the water tower east of the roundabout. Entrance during the summer time is free for both locals and tourists. An instructor is on site to provide instructions and guidance and to supervise the allocation of pedal cars and driving turns. In the Traffic City, children are always the responsibility of their parents and must be supervised. The pedal cars are only allowed for children under the age of 12. Angry Birds Activity Park The Angry Birds Activity Park is located next to the Holiday Club Saimaa hotel and spa, on two floors, at the shopping centre Capri. The lower floor comprises a kids' play world and a toddlers' world. Also located on the lower floor are the Angry Birds cinema, pedal cars and rope bridges. Flowpark Flowpark is located in the Myllysaari Recreation Area in Lappeenranta. The park is within walking distance of the city centre. In the summer, a nice way to get to the activity park is on board the street car. Flowpark's adventure trails have been constructed without harming any of the trees. The trails run 2–10 metres above the ground. They are a great way of testing courage, coordination and balance, but also an overall fun experience. The trails are colour-coded into four categories based on their degree of difficulty. Green and blue trails are the easiest (minimum height 120 cm), while the red and black trails are more difficult (minimum height 150 cm). To enter the Flowpark, you need to be at least 120 cm tall, to be accompanied by an adult if you are under ten years old, and to have permission from a parent/guardian to go on the trails if you are underage. At the Flowpark, dozens of different activities will be sure to provide enough challenge to everyone, from experienced adventurers to first-timers! Atreenalin Adventure Park Saimaa Atreenalin Adventure Park Saimaa is located in the Rauha area, a short distance from Holiday Club Saimaa hotel and spa. The Discovery and Family routes are also well-suited for young children (minimum height 130 cm), but under 13 year-olds must be accompanied by their parents. The Kid's Land offers plenty of activities for smaller and younger children. Take a Cruise on Lake Saimaa or to Vyborg, Russia, in the Summer of 2015 15 The stunning waterways of Lake Saimaa are a fantastic experience. Each programme combines top scenes from classical works of ballet with exciting new pieces by contemporary choreographers, many of which are being seen for the first time in Finland. This tradition continues in summer 2015, when the sixth Ballet Gala will be held on 12–13 June at Lappeenranta City Theatre. Artistic Director Juhani Teräsvuori promises that the Ballet Gala's programme will be full of sweet surprises, such as Maraschino Cherries. He also predicts that the gala in June will be the most fascinating yet. Introdans, a Dutch company of 12 dancers, will headline this year's gala. The rest of the 2015 programme will mainly comprise the most beautiful scenes from classic ballets, such as the magnificent Dying Swan, performed by Alena Shkatula from the Estonian National Ballet. Scenes from ballets such as The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, La Bayadère and The Talisman will be performed by leading dancers from one of the finest ballets in Germany, Semperoper Dresden, and from the Estonian National Ballet and the Ballet of the National Theatre in Brno, Czech Republic. The Brno company also includes one young Finnish ballet dancer, Emilia Vuorio. Returning to the stage after his successful performance in summer 2014 will be Davit Galstyan, in the delicious Le Bourgeois by Jacques Brel. Tickets to the Ballet Gala are sold at the ticket office of the Lappeenranta City Theatre and the Customer Service Centre Winkki at the City Hall. Tickets are also available anywhere in Finland via Lippupiste and online at www.lippu.fi. Lappeenranta Ballet Gala is organised by Nordic Dance Makers in cooperation with the City of Lappeenranta. www.lappeenranta.fi/balettigaala 20 Lappeenranta City Theatre The new theatre is located in the city centre in the IsoKristiina shopping centre.
