God said to Moses on the mountainside of Mount Horeb, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob…..And the Lord, said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmaster: for I know their sorrows.” (Exodus 3:6a, 7 KJV) The second book of the Bible Exodus, really laid the foundation and the establishment of first mental and physical going or coming home rubrics in the minds for his chosen people the Jews, Hebrews, and Israelites. There are two key points in Exodus 3 that God made clear earlier in this dialogue with Moses. First, God said, “I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. And God said, moreover, unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The Lord God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you; this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. (Exodus 3:14-15) This first key point is so important for Moses to convey, the best of his own ability why and who is sending him back to Egypt and to tell Pharaoh to let his millions of cousins go from this place. Secondly, is what are they going to do once they leave Egypt and sojourn into the wilderness area and mountain. Specifically, God gave Moses more instructions, “Go to King Pharaoh and tell him that the Lord, the God of the Hebrews met with us; and you King Pharaoh, are to let these Hebrews/Israelites go for a three days’ journey into the wilderness, so that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.” (Exodus 3:18) Notwithstanding, this second point of instructions in this historical day of Moses is so relevant to remembering what God was establishing both physically and mentally for his chosen people, the Jews. It was clear that God loved his people and shall maintain his spoken Promised with Abram in Genesis 12. The time came and God was fulfilling his Word of yesterday years. It fell upon the prophet Moses and he was challenged greatly by Pharaoh of Egypt and his own people the Hebrews. However, Moses was able to be successful in establishing those first two key Cont. on next page Watson Moore Bennie Morris Kent Squires Ron Wilson October 5 Youth Schedule ~ COMMUNION SERVERS ~ Fall Rally at Chestnut Ridge Depart at 2:30 pm Tammy & Buddy Edens October 12 October 19 October 26 Fundraiser Luncheon 11:00-1:00 No Youth Night Youth Night 5-7 pm Dinner: Abigail & Anna Bradley Homecoming Youth work activities during the day (10noon) No Youth Night Counters Gary Brant & Jane Johnson Bernice Wilson & Ben Saunders BJ Smith & David Weislak Pat Miesner & John Payne Flowers Janet Wilkinson Susan King Nancy Wilkinson Elsie Wolf Time with Young Disciples Pastor Johnnie Wright Annette Wright TBA Willie Tart & Children’s Choir 11:00 Acolyte/ Crucifer Aubrey Gray / Carson Seagroves Millie Stielper/ Leanne Beckham Millie Stielper/ Patrick Forrest Nora Harbold/Millie Stielper Noah’s Ark Deanna & Leann Beckham Chris & Stan Harbold Steve & Christy Gray TBA Greeters 8:45 ~ Ruth Brady 11:00 ~ Kertis, Joan, Emilie & Ritchie Henderson 8:45 ~ Coralee Dodson 11:00 ~ The Scott Family (Andy, Jennifer, Chloe & Isabella) 8:45 & 11:00 Brad & Pat Miesner ONE SERVICE HOMECOMING Mae Edla Shaw & Jim Shaw MEALS ON WHEELS MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY Jim Hill Pat Mendenhall Mike & Ann Viola Bernice Wilson & BJ Smith Ron & Brenda Wilson Thanks to a generous donation in memory of Cliff and Bunny Wilkinson, Mebane UMC now offers MP3 players with recorded worship services. Before those millions of cousins left Egypt, a sacred family meal was put into place called “Passover” a meal of unblemished lamb, unleavened bread, and bitter herbs given to Moses by God. Moses instructed the Jews how they were to prepare this meal and when to eat. This special memorial meal established a new family bond, because God was doing a new thing. God was allowing the death angel to pass over those houses that had lamb’s blood outside each door, but those who did not, their first born was killed. Sadly, to say this beginning caused much death in Egypt, but a new memorial and remembrance was founded. The Israelites understood it was God’s doing and helping them to leave, but it was also starting a new Israelite or Jewish family tradition; of going home with many remembrances from years ago. Moreover, today, we are not Jews, Israelites, or Hebrews, and the tradition of the Passover has changed to a degree, because of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. It started with Jesus’ birth, then teaching, and dying on the cross, but it ended with his resurrection and ascension into heaven. Jesus became our Passover lamb; he was that sacrificial lamb because he has that right relation with his father God. I am so amazed even today, that repeatedly; the Jews still remembered their season of Passover. It is purported currently that annually male Jews still return physically and mentally positively charged, because of what Moses shared and what God had told him on the mountain side on Mount Horeb. In short, this is your personal invitation. God is calling you to come to your home church. You have been blessed because of the many years you have experienced worship, praise, fellowship, love and joy in this holy edifice. Finally, we the members of Mebane UMC we love to see you, your family, friends, guests, and acquaintances in worship this Homecoming. Most of my adult life has been spent in the role of a teacher. Whether I was teaching a child the concepts and skills necessary to be a musician, or teaching life lessons to a teenager who just needed guidance, or any number of life experiences used as examples for my son while being a parent - my role has always been one of a motivator. The gift for me has always been witnessing the eagerness by which knowledge is desired by another, and knowing I had something to offer to the curiosity. There are days that I realize that I too am eagerly waiting for a Teacher… One who will fill me with knowledge, as I am still the student sitting on the edge of my seat anticipating the next lesson. As an adult, our lessons certainly have changed, and at times can be just as challenging as they were in our earliest years. Not all lessons are a walk in the park, but we must remember that we first had to fall before we learned to walk. "In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again..." ~Hebrews 5:12 Regardless of the lessons set out before us, we should always have our eyes focused straight ahead - on the ultimate Teacher... A mental illness is a medical condition that disrupts a person's thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illnesses are medical conditions that often result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life. Treats from Car Trunks “People with mental problems are our neighbors. They are members of our congregations, members of our families; they are everywhere in this country. If we ignore their cries for help, we will be continuing to participate in the anguish from which those cries for help come. A problem of this magnitude will not go away. Because it will not go away, and because of our spiritual commitments, we are compelled to take action.” (Rosalyn Carter) National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) www.nami.org NAMI Faithnet www.nami.org/namifaithnet Mental Health Ministries www.mentalhealthministries.net (located in the Kingsdown Parking Lot) Itinerary: Free Hot Dog Supper in the Fellowship Hall Followed by a Costume Parade Fun Games & Activities for Children Trunk or Treat in Kingsdown Parking Lot For more information, please contact the church office at 919-563-4301 or [email protected] UNITED METHODIST WOMEN (UMW) UMW CALENDAR OF EVENTS October 7 Hawfields Worship, Hawfields Presbyterian Home – Leaders, Esther Circle -- 10:30 a.m. October 11 NC Conference UMW Annual Meeting, Methodist University, Fayetteville, begins at 9:30 a.m. October 16 Mebane UMC Book Club, 7 p.m., Room 212 October 26 Corridor District UMW Annual Meeting, Pleasant Green UMC, Durham – 2:30 p.m. Bishop Hope Morgan Ward – Speaker November 4 Hawfields Worship, Hawfields Presbyterian Home – Leader, “Clown Willie” -- 10:30 a.m. November 15 Local UMW Officer Training (LOTs), Bellemont UMC, Burlington 9:00--9:30 a.m. Gathering; 9:30-11:30 a.m. Training November 18 Mebane UMW Annual Meeting & 2015 Officer Installation, 6:00 to 7:15 p.m., MUMC Sanctuary November 20 Mebane UMC Book Club, 7 p.m., Room 212 Corridor District UMW Annual Meeting Our Corridor District UMW Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday, October 26 at Pleasant Green UMC.
